Today we listened to scenes 3 & 4 (we are going to begin moving a bit faster than one or two scenes a day). Make sure you re-read these scenes for clear understanding. Also, make sure that you are filling in the grid sheet as well as looking at the other unit long assignment. Do not get behind or you will end up losing points in the end.
For this evening, please discuss the following:
Describe your first impression of Macbeth. What do we know about him and how do we initially perceive him? Does this impression change after he hears the witches predictions or the fact that he became Thane of Cawdor? What about his comments at the end whe he learns that Malcolm will be the next king? How does all of this tie into the idea of ambition?

My first impression of Macbeth was that he is seirous, and a good leader, and is sarcastick. We know that he is a worior, and defeated a army. We also know that he is worthey to the king. We percevie him as a worior. I think that my impression has changed after hearing the witches predections. And the fact that he has became the Thane of Cawdor changes my impression evean more because he has moved up on the powdom tole. I think that this all ties in to ambition because Macbeth knows that now he has what it takes to become king as well. Now that he is Thane of Cawdor
My first impression of Macbeth was a modest person and a natural leader. From the reading we already know that he is Thane of Glamis and destined to do great things. At first we think that he knows what he is going to do in his life, but that changes when he meets the witches. When the witches tell Macbeth their prophecies he at first does not believe what he is hearing then he accepts it and wants it to happen. When he hears that he will become Thane of Cawdor he does not believe witches because he thinks the original thane is still alive. When Macbeth learns that Malcolm is chosen to be king Macbeth is jealous and wants to clam his title. All this ties into ambition because now that Macbeth knows what he is to become he wants to achieve this goal of becoming king.
My first impresion of MacBeth is that he is a cockey, smart and brave war hero. We know that he is a great military leader, and shows his bravery by fighting with his men. I think our impresion of MacBeth does not change too much after the witches enter. It shows that sometimes he is a quieter, more cotiouse person. Once he figures out that he is the new 'Thane of Cawdor' he feels that the witches might have predicted right. He then feels that he will become king, and his mind becomes focused on it. He feels that malcome is in his way and will try to overpass him as king. I think with MacBeth's ambition he will do what ever it takes to become kind!! (very dramatic)
My first impression on Macbeth was that he was a big leader that just wanted to go into battles. We see him as a knight or warrior. My impression did change after the witches came. Now i think he can be easily freaked out but wants to look like a tough guy. Now that Macbeth heard Malcom is becoming king i think Macbeth knows that he has to become king.

As the story of MacBeth opens, we find Macbeth to be a trustworthy and upstanding citizen to the crown of Scotland. He was a military hero and he was refered to as "great" by his equals. As he encounters the 3 witches, his view point begins to change. He own malicious thought creep into his mind and thoughts of treason overtake his conscience. Macbeth is threatened by the concept that Malcolm is prophecied to inherit the Kingship after him. He conspires tyrant plans to bypass these issues.

Macbeth is kinda different. I just did not get that much out of him. He seemed kinda confused when witches came and foretold titles he would have. But he seems to be a good leader and morally good for now. I think Macbeth will become corrupt and abuse his powers to take control of the kings thrown. I also think it's the witches plan to do just that. I think the quote talking about things not being what they seem will tie in, and since he became Thane of Cawdor, he will assume that he will be king. In the end he will be corrupt and fall.
Im not 100% sure on my intake of macbeth yet. What i do get from the story so far is that he has made a big impaced in a lot of people. Almost everyone so far lookes up to him. When the witches come he seems kind of miss taking at first and unsure if what really going on. when the witches leave he seems kind of cocky or sarcatic.
yes my impression changes after a the witches come, but it doesnt change much. It just lets you see a litte more of who he really is. I think all this ties into the idea of ambition by the idea of him mayb becoming king. It give macbeth something to work for and as well shows how hard he has already worked and that has gotten him to the place he is now. I cant wait to see when happpens next and whats to come from it.
Initially Macbeth comes across as a quiet man. He too is a powerful and honorable man. To me he also comes across as very humble. After the witches predict he will become the Thane of Cawdor he seems to lose some of his humbleness. Macbeth stands taller and begins to think he is something special, just because of some silly prediction. At the end when Macbeth learns that Malcolm will be the next king he show a much more bold. All of this ties into ambition because Macbeth very much wants to become the next King. Macbeth must have ambition to achieve his goal.
I believe my impression of Macbeth to be somewhat mixed. At first, he seemed shy as well as unassuming. Banquo seemed to be the one eager to seize power, but that changed after he heard the witches' prophecy. He becomes almost greedy in his lust for power, especially when he does become Thane of Cawdor. By that point, one can see that Macbeth is not the good-guy anymore, hence the first of the witches' predictions. After Macbeth hears that Malcolm is to be king, the reader is put on the fence. Will he lean this way, or that way? Personally, I think that Macbeth will tempt fate as it has already been kind to him so-far.
All of this ties into ambition on a similar front. Macbeth wants to be king. It's his goal, his deep-down desire. The question is, is he willing to go all the way to acheive his goal, or will he step back and ponder before he ruins his and others' lives. For, as Prince Hamlet said:
To be or not to be, that is the question."(Act III, Sc. I.) For the human mind truly is the undiscovered country...
My first impression of Macbeth is that he is a good leader and the people all like him because of his bravery. For some reason the witches knew that he was going to become the Thane of Cawdor. But I don't think he believed them at first because he was kinda joking about it. He found out they weren't making it up because he was told by one of the royal people, I can't remember his name though. After he finds out that he is now the Thane of Cawdor he begins to get confidence that he can become king. But he finds out that Malcolm is going to be the next king and he gets a little jealous. My impression does change because he becomes a little cocky because he thinks he can become anything he wants. Macbeths amition is to become king once he finds out he is the Thane of Cawdor and the Thane of Glamis, well at least that's what I think. Ambition is in a lot of stories, otherwise there wouldn't really be a plot to them.
Macbeth, my first impression of him is he was born to become a leader. We know that he is a war hero and has defted an army, but we dont know is hoe he got there. We soon too be able to understand the story more as the witchs enter. the witches begin to bow down to this guy calling him thane of cawdor and king macbeth. Macbeth is soon apporached later my the pervios cawdor for him to become the new one. Macbeth is know thinking to himself maybe those witches were right first this maybe next king. This all ties into ambition by how it is macbeths desire to become king and thane of chawder. This is so far what has happened in acts 3 and 4.

My first impression of MacBeth is that it is kind of cool but it is extremely hard to comprehend. At first, I thought that MacBeth sounded like he is a good leader, but also kind of quiet as well. I think him and Banquo are very different. Banquo seems like he will do anything to become King. MacBeth seems like he is willing to win it fairly. When he becomes the Thane of Cawdor, I think it freaked him out that the witches were right about that. He begins to think that he has a better shot at becoming king too. I think that it is not fair the Malcom can just get King because of family. I think the MacBeth will have ambition and do whatever it takes to become king.

How does all of this tie into the idea of ambition
My impression of Macbeth is that he is brave and nobel. I think thar he is also ambitious too. He defeated an army and the king thinks highly of him. We percieve him as a good person. My impression changes when he finds out that he has gained another title and moved up on the social ladder. You can tell he is kind of sounding greaty. He is being ambitious in a bad way.
My first impression of Macbeth was that he is smart, modest and brave. We know that Macbeth is destined to become Thane of Cawdor and eventually king. I dont think that our impression of Macbeth changes when he meets the witches. He still seems sort of modest by saying that the Thane of Cawdor is a goood man. We dont really begin to see how ambitious he is until he hears that Malcome will become king. We've been learning about ambition and now we get to see how it plays into other peoples lives. Macbeth wants to use his ambition to bet out Malcome and become King. By the end of scene four we realize that Macbeth is much diffrent than he was in the beginning.
My first impression of Macbeth is that he is a great leader. We know this because he has shown the ability as a general to lead his army to victory in battle. We also have learned that Macbeth is ambitious and is looking forward to his new role as the thane of Coward. I don’t really think his impression changed that much other then the fact that he now believes it might be his fate to become king. Lastly, we learn that Macbeth may be over ambitious in that he might do anything to become king. Macbeth, after learning that Malcolm will become king, must now decide how far he wants to take his ambition to become king. I think this may be the main focus of the next few scenes. So Macbeth must be careful not to cross the line of good and bad ambition.
My first impression of Macbeth is that he is very smart, brave, honorable and also confused. I think that we initially perceive him as courageous and smart. I really don't think that my impression of Macbeth really didn't change except the fact that he is more ambitious to become king, as he already had become the Thane of Cawdor. Especially when Macbeth hears that Malcome is to be king. I believe that he really wants to be king so he is trying to find a way to get Malcome out of the way. I believe that thisties into what we learned about ambition because everyone wants to do something in life, or everyone has somehow set a goal in life that they really want to accomplish and it all comes back to ambition and persistence.
Macbeth is a decorated war hero, this we know. I think that his prowess on the battlefield constitutes for all of his success as this story's setting takes place in a time where one's might with a sword was the ultimate vessel for power save for inheriting it as some kings do. I initially perceive the warrior as a smug veteran of combat in that he knows he can get the job done. He is confident if not cocky at first. However, after the witches' predictions and his becoming the Thane of Cawdor, he becomes a bit more of a skeptic than he was prior, or rather he displays a sense of skepticism that he hadn't previously before. Upon hearing Malcolm being named the heir to the throne, Macbeth seems to get a little envious and as such wishes to capture the throne, thus essentially fulfilling the witches' prophecy that Macbeth initially scoffed at. Macbeth's desire to become king is a clear example of the ambition theme that we've been discussing throughout the course.
My first impression of macbeth was that he was a man who knew what he wanted to do. Best of all he knew how to do it, and was a little cockey about it too. we know he is able to be a king, and has proved himself worthy of this job. he is also a fighter, he knows how to defeat his enemy. when we find out he is the thane of cawdor i started to think that he was even more of a hero and leader. when he learns that he will be the next king, i believe he was a little startled and surprised at the same time. because i think he was thinking the kings son should have been the next king. this all comes back to ambition because macbeths ambition is to become the king and be known as a great ruler. just like all the other characters in the play, they all have goals they wish to achieve.
Although i have not read that far i think i know enough to give a decent answer to this question. Initially i found MacBeth to be a strong-willed and couragous and confident person. His victory and strength in battle are great qualities and his promotion to Thane of Cawdor does not suprise me in the slightest due to what we read the first day. I have not read any of the later scenes due to the food poisioning that kept me in the bathroom or bed for the better part of two days. But i think this ties into ambition greatly. If MacBeth did not care to win the battle then he could have retreated or even had someone else go into battle. Instead he decided to fight them again and once again win. This ambition caused him to recieve a great reward that he could not have done without his ambition.
My first impersion of McBeth is really that he is nothing special. He might be a good leader but he seems ver closed minded and one sided. He doesn't belive the witches at first and Balongo belived more that he did even though they we dicussing McBeth's furture. We percive him to be this great warrior on the battle field and one of the kings most trusted men. When the witch tell him he is to be Thane of Cawdor he doesn't seem to belive them, in fact he is very secptical at the fact. Thought after he learns the oringal Thane was a tratior and that he is the new Thane, his views changes. And furthermore when he hears the kind tell his son he is to inheirate the thrown he seems almost hell bent to stop him and take the thrown himself do the witches telling him of his furture. Overall in the first sences with McBeth you already see a change in charcater, going from not beliving to plotting to get on the thrown.

my first impresion of Macbeth is that he is a good leader and. every body likes him because he is very brave. i know he fought some army and he is a good worrior. yes my impresion did change when witches begin calling thane of cawdor and king macbeth. malcolm know he is going to become next king. macbeths ambition is to be a better king. he has what it takes to be a good king and lead people.

my first impression of macbeth is in a way americanized i feel. elaborating on that idea; i feel in his culture, macbeth is almost held as superhuman, or heroic, while in american culture i would see him as a regular person performing extraordinarily. after i hear his reactions to the witches predictions, i feel the same way about him. he seems to me like a good leader, but hes still human. his comments after he learns that Malcolm will be king is kind of in a way, i told you so-ish. finally, this ties into ambition in the way that macbeth feels he should overcome obstacles to make it happen. macbeth is a superb leader, but human character overall i feel.
My first impression of Macbeth is that he is a natural born leader, and a very brave man. Macbeth is a very successful man in battle. After he hears the witches predictions he starts to act a little sarcastic and jokingly. He doesn't believe that he has become Thane of Cawdor because he says the current leader is alive and well. He has not heard yet that the old Thane of Cawdor has been executed. When he learns that he has become the new Thane of Cawdor he is happy and surprised. He cannot believe that he has become the Thane of Cawdor. When he learns at the end that Malcolm will be the next king he decides he has two choices. He can either step down and let Malcolm take the throne as king, or he can fight to gain the spot as king. This all ties into the idea of ambition because Macbeth has earned these titles and honors by being ambitious and not giving up. I have a feeling he is going to use his ambitious behavior to gain control of the throne and become king.
My first impreeions of Macbeth is that he is a well respected leader. From the reading we have done so far we know that he is destine for many great things. When Macbeth first hears what the wicths say at first he does not believe them. He still believe the Thane of Cawdor is still alive so he believes that it can not happen. Once he finds out that the wicths were telling the truth that he is going to become the thane of Cawdor. After he finds out that he is the new Thane of Cawdor he is conveniced he can become king. After he finds out that malcom is going to become the new king he become jealse. All this ties into ambition is thatwithout ambition what would be the drive of the people in the stories it also makes the storys more interesting.
My first impression of Macbeth is that is a good natural leader and someone that you could relate to. Initially we perceive him to be as a hero. The witches didn't seem to have any effect on the impression after the predictions of him becoming Thane of Cawdor came true, even though they just finished joking about the situation. He is just behing placed higher up the chain so he could do more good for the people. When Macbeth hears about Malcolm being the next king he states how he doesn't want anyone to know of this dark thoughts. This all ties into the idea of ambition because Macbeth is thinking about what he can do so that it is him that becomes king.
My first impression of MacBeth was that he is smart, and brave. I do think that my impression of Macbeth changed when he meets the witches because he starts thinking about he could actually become king. And he keeps thinking that he could be the one who becomes the king. We know that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and through out the book king. I believe that Macbeth feels that Malcolm is in his way. Macbeth will try take his spot in beging king. I think ambitions roles in here because we have being learning about ambition and Macbeth wants to become the next King. So Macbeth must have ambition to achieve his goal.
I think that maybe macbeth is kinda foreshadowing everybody dying. He just gets quiet when the witches tell him about his new title. Maybe he kinda has a bad feeling about what's starting to happen. I don't know if he had anything before this. He could have been a sheep farmer. Now he's got two big estates and hes starting to get noticed. Thats when stuff starts happening. Macbeth definitely wants to be king, too. He might just kill somebody to get it.
oh yeah i didnt really talk about my first impression of macbeth. He seems like a cool guy. They were sayin that he can fight. That's a good quality in a leader.
My first impression of Macbeth is that he is a military person, who is stern and full of values and courage and etc. This impression holds up when he is told of the predictions, because he is cautious in a smart, level headed way. Although when he learns Malcolm will be the next king, it seems like his values stop holding up, and he gets the idea of doing something very uncharacteristic of himself, killing the king. This all ties into ambition because it shows how ambition can destroy a person's values, and get them to do things that are bad.
