Welcome back and I hope you had a restful break. As we are down to the last weeks of the semester we will be working fast and furious to read "A Doll's House" and review for the final exam.
Remember that you have a test on Things Fall Apart tomorrow and that your charts are due.

To me, this means that a new year invites new opportunities. Apparently, a new year stands as a marker for Oprah to better herself. Honestly, I don't really like this quote. I don't think people should have to use a new year as a chance to better themselves. People should be able to turn their lives around regardless of the time of year. I personally don't agree with the whole "New Years resolution" theory either, basically because of the same reasoning. If people would just set their minds to a goal more often, they wouldn't have to use New Years as an excuse.
I agree with Dan. New Years is a time to celebrate. It is also a time to remind yourself to set a new goal for yourself. I do not understand why everyone makes themselves a new goal on New Year's Eve and then the following few months is really crowded at the gyms compared to any other time of the year. I really do not understand! New Years is just supposed to be a turn of the calendar to a new day and year at the same time!
This means that the new year gives you a chance to start over. You could try to acomplish goals that you may have failed last year. It gives people a chance to turn their lives around. Also it encourages people to set new goals. People usually set goals and plan on accomplishing them through the year. If the previous year doesnt turn out rite the new year gives people a chance to get it rite. Many people do this and some succuceed and others fail.

This is saying that a new year means a new beginning. But it also is telling us that before now we haven't gotten in right at all. That makes this quote at first a little mind boggling. It's saying that we have never archived as a country in the first place and i think that's wrong. But if you look it in the sense that in the past few years we have only went backward it's a totally correct statement. Or she could be talking about a whole different thing and I'm wrong. But i hope get it right with some better people in office.

I think this is saying that you didnt live the right way that year but you have another year to make it right. I don't really think life is supposed to be right or wrong. Of course everyone wants things to get better but sometimes it doesn't and thats just the way it is. I personally do not like this quote because its kind of saying like there is an answer to life. Life is what you make of it. Theres not really a new year or start of anything new. I am still continuing to go to school and play hockey and the date is just date. Like 2008, its just a 9 on the end of it. Theres nothing really new about the new year. The new year is more of an excuse to motavate people. Its basically an excuse to better your life if thats the way someone interprets the new year.

Oprah's quote is one made for the new year ahead of us 2009. She is simply excited to start a new year. If you think about it, it seems like you have another year that you can just start over. Refresh and start the new year of right. You have another year to do something different and do what you didn't get to do yet. I have a few opionions on this quote. I truley do kinda agree with dan saying you should be able to start over new whenever you want. Not just wait for the new year. But i also think the quote is just applying to step out of your comfert box and just go for the new year.

This quote to me means that there will be new things to come lets hope there good. This is a new opportunity to start the new year right. You can set new goals and work on ones that you failed to achieve. There are certain things in life you get a new chance with. You do get the opportunity for new year resolutions. One of the biggest resolutions is to loose weight. I personally think that is a bad choice of a resolution. I'm pretty sure that less than half of the people in the world even stick to their resolutions. I personally have made one resolution which is to fight less with my Dad. I really plan to stick with it so hopefully I do.
Mr. Kay, for the research paper that you have yet to grade because you didn't know who did which parts, I did the history of the issue part (the first part of the paper).
Dan's theory is magnificent and one that I agree with whole-heartedly. The quote is a simple one to decipher - Oprah is explaining that the new year brings in more chances to right one's wrongs and fulfill other goals that they may have had, such as the ridiculous "New Year's Resolution". I do not think that anyone should make a goal simply because it is a new year. I think that someone should make a goal simply because they feel the desire to achieve that goal. I know many people who say - in the months approaching the new year - "my New Year's resolution is. . .". I find this foolish, as people shouldn't wait for the new year to come around to make any adjustments or changes - and I, too, am a felon of this unwritten law, so to speak. For example, I decided to quit smoking for my new year's resolution. This was a goal that I had made months prior to the new year, but I simply kept smoking cigarettes until the new year had arrived because I enjoyed it. Finally, at the stroke of midnight on New Year's day, I tossed my remaining cigarettes in the trash and said goodbye to smoking. I was proud, and still am for I have yet to break the resolution, but I would have been much prouder had I done such a thing when I decided to make the goal.
On that note, I am tobacco free now and dearly intend to keep it that way. :]

This is saying that we have a new year and a new start. Last year is behinde us and its time to move on. We have made new resolutions, and have made new plans to live a better year. Its a new year people grow a year older, and a little more wiser. Change has happend, we have ellected a new president and we are all hoping for the economy to get better. This also means that there is new opportunities opining up. So chears to all to 09 and a better year.
Cheers i also say, as we can now start anew. This quote means that we can put behind (most) of our past problems and begin the year on a new slate. Im sure we will make the same mistakes and some new ones but thats just the fun of it. While many people say that "oh the new years coming i'll be different then" most of us know this never happens. We are who we are and we do what we've always done. I agree with some of the few post above that the new year should not be an excuse to change. I think if you say your going to change you should just do it. Well happy new year, maybe we will get it right this year.
I believe this quote is saying that with a new year comes new chances to improve. New chances to imporve yourself, your country and anything that needs improvement. It gives you a fresh start and a reason to better yourself. I think this goes along with a new years resolution. Many people use a new years resolution as a reason to start things over and to make changes in their lives for the better. Although many people dont usually follow through with their new years resolution, it still gives a reason for people to better theirselves. I also think that the new year will hopefully bring change with our country and hopefully a fresh start with help our country's economy and will help our country get imporvement where needed.
I believe that she is speaking broadly, saying that everyone has another chance to do what they wanted to get done the previous year. Everyone sets goals to accomplish during the new year. Each new year brings new opportunities for people. I also think that a new years resolution is simply pointless. The fact of it is, if you cant set a goal for yourself any other time of the year than why do you think your going to accomplish it this time. Its all just in peoples heads, they think that they'll actually stick to it, then before you know it they completly forget about thier promise to themself which discourages them even more. It's a tradition, but a stupid one at that.
This means that you have another year to get what your goal that you have right. It is another time for people to turn their lives around. If they started out with a bad year they might be able to fix it this year. People always leave New Year revaluations for themselves. They set a goal and try to archive it. Many people say that they should improve their new year. If they don’t set a new goal they don’t really have anything to look forward and improve on for themselves.
It is saying that every new year brings an oppurtunity to make something right that you did wrong last year. It is a celebration of the fact that you have another chance to make something right in your life and make improvements in others and your own life. It is a holiday that has been celebrated as another year ending, is really a holiday to be celebrated for having another chance at improving your life. People make new years resolutions as a custom of what they should use their time left to do with their life. It also gives people a greater sense of experience and achievement for lasting another year on Earth. New Years is basically an excuse to make it seem like you have more time than you did before you add a year on to your age within that year and you give yourself more of a sense of achievement.

Oprach Winfrey's qute without a doubt sums up a positive mind set for the upcoming unknown of the new year upon us in a simple way everyone can relate to. Although yes, I do agree with Dan's point about new years being a silly excuse to better ourselves... but I agree only to a certian point with Dan on this. I believe that everyone gets to that point at the end of a year where they just need to be refreshed and have a new mindset with goals they wish to accomplish. Every single year we have a new chance to get it right, because maybe, just maybe, we have finally overcome certian obstacles that were in our way. Perhaps this is the year we have learned from our past and want to persue a bright and shiny new year. Things get in the way and so do people sometimes from reaching things we have always dreamed of, and sometimes a brand new year is the kind of hope we need. With the way the world is now I am postive that every person needs a little bit of hope sprinkled in their life just about now. Some form of hope and faith is a necissiary in life and without it, things would simply fall apart. On the other hand it is vital to remeber, everyday is a blessing and should be looked upon with the "new year attitude" because in many ways it is very much like one. It is full of promises, chances, change, and life...it just depends on how much life you put into it. In the wise words of Oprah, here's to a shot to "get it right" not just this year, but every year, and every day.
:)
To me this is saying that every new year is like starting over. A new year gives you a chance to worj towards something special with your new years resolution. It also serves as a wiping of the slate and a new beginning for others. Although this is only one time of year this is when most people decide to change them selves. This should be able to happen at any point throughout the year. But, because it is a fresh start people find that its an easier time to start. They find it easier because they have not soiled their goals already.

This means that everyone has a fresh start now. It is a new year and you can put everything that didnt work out this year behind year. It is saying that you have a chance to fix all your mistakes that you made the previous year. Another chance for us to get it right could also mean as a country or as a group. She could mean that this year needs to be different by meaning we all need to work together to accomplish. Put all of your problems behind you, because you get a fresh start for the new year. It gives people a chance to turn their lives around. It is good for people to set goals for themselves for the new year.
The new year means new beginnings and new obstacles for all of us to be facing. There may have been things in the previous year that we may wish that we would have done better, or just done period. The start of this brand new year gives us the chance to do the things that we wished we would hae done last year. The opportunities that we may have faced before, but never took the chaqnce to persue, now we have that chance to in the new year. There are always going to be things that we wish we could have done and this just goes to show that its never too late. Having that new years resolution that so many of us have had, and never really followed through with sets the tone for this up and coming year for each of us. This New year is something to celebrate and cherish because like Oprah said, "It's just a nother chance for us to get it right!"
This means that the new year gives you a chance to start over. This also means that a new year invites new opportunities for everone. If things wenernt going so well for you last year this gives you a chance to start fresh. People make new years resolutions as a custom of what they should use their time left to do with their life. Many people use a new years resolution as a reason to start things over and to make changes in their lives for the better. I dont understand why people make new year resoultions because most people dont stick to them. Its just a excuse for people to start over.
As we go through the years our past mistakes do not go away, are not always forgotten, and can not always be wiped clean. so to call it “another chance to get it right” may not be the right words. Our lives revolve around learning from the past, not wiping it away like chalk on a board. If we are to think of the New Year as a clean slate then that would mean that all of our past mistakes would be erased, and we would have nothing to learn and grow from. So as I go into this new year we do not need to completely forget, but forgive and move on.

Cheers to a new year and another chance to make us right means to me that so many of us are unhappy with ourselfs and we feel like a new year starting will make us change our minds on who we really want to be. i think its foolish that people have to wait till the new year to feel its time to change. my mom always told me if your unhappy with your self tomorrow is always to new day to be who you really want to be. i feel that so many people want to change in this world that will never happen because so many people are lazy or dont have enough time, well get off your ass and do what you need to do. who ever says i have to wait for the new year to loose weight or to stop smoking is a flat out coward...
