Cardmarking 2 Day 6

I hope you found good groups for your research projects, picked a good country and a good social issue. We will discuss a variety of things each day before we head to the library or computer lab.

For today's thought, talk about the importance of looking at social issues from a cultural perspective. Is there an issue that is important to you personally or that you think the world needs to do a better job of adressing? Why?

I think one of the largest social issues is the gas prices. They continue to rise, but Americans do nothing but complain about it. I believe people should get involved and actually do something about it. The fact that foreign countries are able to charge as much as they do for a barrel of oil is ridiculous. I believe there should be some sort of restriction on oil trade. I'm sure other countries are suffering because of greed like this too. I believe if Americans come together and protest the gas prices as a whole, we could actually accomplish something.

I think one major social issue that our country has is our idea and picture of what perfection is. This country and this culture strives to much to be perfect, and are willing to go to the most extremes to get there. Many times people lose their true identity because they are so focused on what they think they have to be in this society. Our culture has really set a bad example in terms of the media and what is being put out there of the idea of "perfect". Young girls and even boys are tring to follow this image to a tee these days. I think this is something everyone struggles with, and I think it is sort of being dealt with and our society is starting to really branch out from what is just in the media. This issue has started to improve and I hope it just keeps on improving because it has really been a big issue for our culture and our societies here in America.

I think the world needs to do a better job with eachother. I think there is to much war and they need to figure things out. Other countries are in alot of danger. I think those other countries should be helped out be everyone. They should dicuss more important issues like genocides and other things. And not worry about smaller things going on in the world. They should also be more aware of there own countries and stop worrying about eveyone else.

Culture is the only social issue in some country's. Mostly all middle eastern country's are that way. Any religion there ends up starting a war or a fight because they don't agree. The world is already addressing this issue. I just don't think there doing it the right way. I think it should be more up to them as long as its peaceful. I just think that religion should be more peaceful.

I think an important issue would be politics because it is all around us. Everyone needs to just get along and be nice to one another, but that won't happen. If everyone just got along, everything would be ran alot smoother. If we communicate better with other countries we would be more popular around the world. I dont know that much about politics but when I think of politics it reminds me of the election. I really dont care who wins because either way I think our country will be the same. I think in politics that everyone thinks their right but when really none of them are right and they are fighting for nothing.

When you are looking at social issues, it is better to look at it from a cultural viewpoint because you see the problem from a different perspective. You can sometimes see past things that people from different culures dont see. You seriously have to "walk in someone elses shoes" to know how people live. There are many issues that the world has that people dont believe they should be doing. Take diamonds for example, there are Militia Leaders in places such as Africa. They mine out the diamond ore and make diamonds. All the money they sell the diamonds for is almost pure profit. The people who mine are slaves in most cases.

It is very important to look at social issues from a cultural perspective because it may be easier to solve an issue. This is important also because if you look at an issue from a cultural perspective you may notice things that need to happien in order to solve the probelm. The issue that I think is important is Global Warming. This is an issue worth adressing because it is ruening our enviorment. Global warming is ruining our enviorment and something needs to be done. If someting is not done in the future it may be difficult to live on this planet. This issue I think is the most important and needs to have something done about it.

One issue I personally think the world needs to do a better job addressing is underage drinking. I think that since the drinking age is 21 in America, it increases the rate of more young people wanting to drink. I know that if the age was lower, like 18, then teenagers wouldn't want to drink as much. In general all people always want what they can't have, so drinking underage seems "cool" to alot of teenagers. The effects of underage drinking, long and short term, needs to be addressed more to the youth because I know that their are so many of the teens that are simply, just ignortant to the subject. I remember that in Elementary, everyone had to do the DARE program, but seriously at the time who is 10 years old and going to parties and drinking? Not many that I know are going out and having a chance at the age of 10 and usuing what they learned at DARE. It's a huge issue that affects alot of High School students in many ways that some may not realize until something big happens. Which is sad because something to affect someone's change of heart in drinking would have to be something big like a drunk driving accident, or alcohol posioning. Yet in reality, this is the harsh truth, and has to be more addressed before teens already have that mind set. I do realize that at the same time there are only so many ways to prevent kids from experimenting things like drinking and it's all about growing up and realzing who you want to be in life, and what you want to do. To some extent, the world does need to address this issue more openly, and frequently.

I think one of the largest social issues is world hunger. If everyone didn't just waste there food or throw it away. Everyone in the world would have food to eat. There is enough food in the world for everyone. If people didn't waste so much there would be plentey of food to go around. I think it is terrible that people die of food because they don't have any. And other people in the world have more food than they need and they waste most of it. That is one social issue that needs to be adressed more.

i think that one of the largest social issues is porverty. in every country either the wholoe thing is poor or there are extremly poor areas. i think that this is due to a bad global economy for these countries and a corrupt and disfunctional government. i believe that these countries nedd to be helped more than they already are if they are at all. many of the wealthyer countries will only send help every now and then or not send any. but i think that it is every countries right to participate and build these countries up. by building these countries up we can gain acess to more resources and goods. with all the new goods brought into the mix the whole global economy will rise causing benefits to everyone. this includes less outsourcing of jobs and more jobs in the US.

culturally, societies traditionally differ from each other. we all have our own belief system. likewise we have our own social organization. if we didn't look culturally at things, we wouldn't understand why everyone differs from ourselves. this is a general theme of the traditional "american arrogance" that we exhibit. as for an issue, there is really nothing that comes to mind. although, the idea of being environmentally friendly is a recurring theme. instead of all of these bureaucrats coming up with ideas, someone needs to act. formulate a cheap, effective and drastic plan to relieve us of our polluting selves.

I think that there are issues that only attened to some cultures, such as the constatnt tribal wars in Africa. Sence the U.S. is not directly affected by this we take no actions to stop this. Im sure that if the people of Africa spent more time studying or working the entire world would be a better place. The United Sates has an issue of only helping countries that help them in some way, or make them look better. We have this image that we are number one and should only deal with top class countries. If we realized that helping countries that want our help instead of others that seem to get angree when we try to help, the world can become a much nicer place. Our culture doesnt realise that in theirs, lifes are being destroyed and we could easily help them.

It is important to look at social issues from a cultural perspective because not everybody agrees on everything. The issue I think the world needs to do a better job of adressing is politics. To many people argue about how the country should be ran. Sometimes if people were smart they would listen to the ideas other people had to say. The U.S would be a better country if we shared ideas instead of not listening to what other people have to say. To many people think that there is only one way to run the country, and that they are the only ones that are right. For example, the election people like 1 person, and they won't listen to what the other person has to say, because they only beleive in either Obama or McCain.

Hey Mr. Kay sorry i was on a field trip all day but i will see you tommorow. I believe that the United States has this imagine in there head of how we are suppost to be. I aggree with Alyssa in saying the perfect life is what we try to reach into todays soicety. In my point of view there is nothing perfect or no one perfect in that matter. But, if i had to say what i would change these would be it. Gas prices are extremely high and i think those need to change. I also believe in having better job oppurtunity's for people in the United States. These are some things that might need a better job of addressing because today there are affecting us. What's affecting us the most is trying to live up to this standard of society. We should be gratefull for the things we have and live day by day.

i think it is important to learn about other social issues in the world because some play a big roal in are lives. i think we need to learn the truth about other social issues insted of listining to the news. i think the oil is a big social issue. the oil is extreamly expencive and every one in the world needs it. we are using it at a very fast rate and once it is gawn its gawn for good. if we could put some of the oil money into reserching for new enventions that dont use oil i think that would help out a lot with the economey. that is what i think is one of the main social issues in the world to day

I think the biggest issues in he U.S. are the gas prices. They are so high it is unbelievable. I was watching TV today and they said they are going to stay high because oil prices "might" go back up. I also think we should use our own oil so we wouldn’t have to pay so much. Soon or later people wont be able to pay the prices and people are going to start walking or riding a bike to work. That is just sad when that day comes. That is one of the biggest issues I think we should fix fast before it's to late.

Looking at social issues from the perspective of the affected culture is an extremely important practice for several reasons. First off, not all cultures may have the same values, beliefs and customs, so, for example, in Afghanistan where women wear the bourkha and we in the United States think that that's an appalingly terrible thing, the people of Afghanistan have been doing it for HUNDREDS of years, and it may not be as big of a deal there. Second, it helps us get over whatever social/political bias we have in our culture against another practice or issue.

As for a current issue that is affecting me, I find it extremely hard to pick just one. (Quick note to people with gas prices; a barrel of oil is about $80. The oil isn't expensive, it's the gas companies keeping the prices high because they like the increased profits...) I find the biggest issue that really affects me to be the existance of the Westboro Baptist church. My uncle's a Marine and so is my cousin, so we attended a funeral for one of their fallen comrades and the WBC was there, picketing. I find it disgusting that such an organization is allowed to exist. Granted, everyone hates them, but still, their "religion" is obscene and disgusting. If anyone wonders who they are, they're the asswipes with the "God Hates F*gs" signs. Look it up on Wikipedia to see what I mean, it just boils your blood. And, while I'm hardly patriotic or anything, I still think that you should have respect enough not to picket a goddamn funeral inciting that the dead guy is gay. That's BEYOND rude. It's discorteous, dispicable, disrespectful, disgusting and downright deplorable. I think that the Federal government needs to pass more laws making it illegal to do so or libellous in some way. In general, I think that the world needs to do something about "smear" religions. While I'm far from religious, I know enough about true spirituality to udnerstand that that's not something you do. It's not written in any holy book and it's just not something normal people do.

i think that a big social issue is all the different diseases going around. i think that if people just took a little more time through out their day there would be less of them. there are many people that do not even wash their hands after they go to the bathroom. i think that if every one would even take the few extra seconds on there bathroom break to wash there hands they wouldn't be sick as often. Most people are even too lazy to do that. that is why people are always sick that's one of the fastest ways to pass germs is to not wash your hands. that's just one of many social issues in the world.

One of the biggest issues in our country is people not trying to make a difference in the world. Many people dont vote because they dont think it will make a difference. Many people in our country complain about all kinds of problems in our society but dont do anything to change it. If you really want change you have to do your part in making that change. If everyone thought the same way and actually did something about problems in our society then things would get done faster and in a better way. Many dont realize the difference they can make. People just need to get involved and know that every vote and every little word said will help make a change in our country and will benefit us a lot.

I beleive the largest issue among our world today is high gas prices and inflation. Even though gas prices are going down right now everything remains at a high price. Right now they literally have us hanging by the hairs on our body to pay these high gas prices. Looking at the past 6 years of gas prices at the pump prices go up during the summer and back down during the winter. However during the summer prices continue to climb higher and higher and in the winter prices dont fall as much. Here are some facts this summer gas prices hit $145 per barol now less than 4 months later gas prices are now near $70 a barol that is over a 50% drop in under 4 months. That is some very greedy people and as said before right now there is nothing we can do about it. So I believe any country that thinks they are paying to much should go to the oil companys and threaten to buy no gas if prices continue there for gas prices would go down.

I feel that there are many social issues in this world that people could change if they put enough effort into it. i feel that the world is lazy and they think that these problems dont effect our everyday life but they really do. many problems in this world that i can think of it how we are not all treated equal and how there is this thing called "profection" which really isnt true at all. it kills me to know that they say that this world is equal and eveyone is treated the same but truthfully we are all not even close to being treated the same. i dont know how we could change this problem but im sure there is a way.

Marc, my computer is now fixed. I just got it up and running a few minutes ago.

Drugs are a very powerful social issue at hand in nigh any place in the world; alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, ecstasy, opiates, depressants - all of these are drugs, and all of these are very commonplace and familiar in almost any setting, be it a school or something else. Firstly, there are adolescents who utilize these drugs underage (for the few that are legal) or in abuse (for the ones that are prescriptive). I don't know why teens do it, and I'll be entirely honest I have smoked nicotine products and I have drank alcohol, and I can honestly say that I don't have a clear reason why. Perhaps it was peer pressure, but I sure as hell knew what I was doing when I took that drag of cigar or that sip of vodka. Next, these are people who use the illicit, illegal drugs just for a thrill or for fun. I say fuck that, because I've had too many familial issues regarding the use of such "recreational drugs", but still have I tried marijuana before even though. Again, peer pressure could have been a factor, but I knew exactly what I was doing when I inhaled that smoke, and I shouldn't have done it. I regret it, looking back on it, and I think that, in society, we should do more to promote a healthier way of escape and activity than we do; hell, we hardly make an effort to stop those that do use these drugs.

The importance of looking at social issues from a cultural perspective because its different from every cultur. One cultur could see veiws way different from the other. I think its inported to look at it different to see and be able to understand how it might effect different culturs.
I think we sould start learning about how different culturs see one another. Look at how the culturs would react with the same thing. How do you think it would effect culturs? Would it be the same in evey way or different for each?
