For my current event I would like to talk about how a new type of radiation therapy shows promise in lung cancer. Aiming powerful beams of radiation precisely at tumors helped control their growth and helped people with early stage but inoperable lung cancer live longer, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday. Intensive radiation therapy(done in one to five treatments instead of the conventional 20 to 30) provided more than double the rate of primary tumor control than seen in prior studies of radiation therapy. This study affects myself and my community. Both my grandma and grandpa smoke and I hate that they do. I know that they both have a good chance of getting lung cancer. If they do I hope they'll learn that smoking is very harmful, and I hope that they will be able to be treated with radiation. I know people who have died from a variety of cancer types and it really is sad. I think that it is really good that more and more discoveries about curing cancer are coming about.

A game show in France uses a psychological experiment to find whether TV can push people to outrageous lengths. Contestants zap a man (an actor, but unknown to the contestant) with electricity until the man cries for mercy. The audience is set up to pressure the contestant into shocking the man with more and more electricity. Surprisingly 80% obeyed, and shocked the man until "death" with 460 volts of electricity. The experiment is compared to the atrocities of Nazi Germany: to find out why so many people went along with what the Nazis said, even though it was inhumane. You would never think that you would do something, but the power of the pressure from others is very strong. I read about an experiment similar to this in sociology, and it is crazy to see how many people gave the undercover actor enough electricity to die. This experiment shows a bit into why people obeyed during the time of Nazi Germany. This also shows the power of television on others. This affects us because we can be influenced by others without really knowing it. The power of influence is very strong. People will do things that they never thought they would do when they are under pressure.

School officials in a rural Mississippi county told a lesbian student to get "guys" to take her and her girlfriend to a high school prom and warned the girls against slow dancing with each other because that could "push people's buttons," according to documents filed Tuesday in federal court.

The American Civil Liberties Union is suing the Itawamba County School District and some officials at Itawamba Agricultural High School on behalf of Constance McMillen, 18, who wanted to escort her girlfriend to the prom and wear a tuxedo. A hearing is scheduled for Monday to hear an ACLU motion that seeks to force the district to hold the April 2 prom it canceled after McMillen made her requests.

In the court documents, McMillen said Rick Mitchell, the assistant principal at the school, told her she could not attend the prom with her girlfriend but they could go with "guys." Superintendent Teresa McNeece told the teen that the girls should attend the prom separately, had to wear dresses and couldn't slow dance with each other because that could "push people's buttons," according to court documents. i think it is completely ridiculous that this sort of thing is still going on. everyone on this earth is different. boys like boys, girls like girls, girls like boys, etc. Schools shouldn't push teens to mold with "society". its embarrasing for the school, because they look bad for showing that type of behavior towards lesbians. if it pushes peoples buttons then they can leave. some people today make such a big deal about it, and its a lot harder for homosexuals to open up and come out.

Police are searching for the people who stole about $70 to $75 million dollars worth of prescription drugs. They cut a hole in the roof and rappelled down into the warehouse and disarmed the alarm system. Police are thinking there was many people involved to be able to steal as much as they did. They are thinking that a truck was waiting outside and they loaded it up that way and drove off in the cover of darkness. This stuns me on how bold some criminals are becoming. Cutting a hole in the roof is like something you see in the movies. Hopefully these guys will be caught so all of these medications can go back to the people. Police are also thinking that these guys might be trying to sell the meds on the black market or over seas. The warehouse did not house narcotics so at least they didnt get anything like that.

A team of archaeologists unearthed two large red granite statues in southern Egypt at the mortuary temple of one of the most powerful pharaohs, who ruled nearly 3,400 years ago. The team discovered a 13foot statue of Thoth, the god of wisdom and the top part of a statue of Pharaoh Amenhotep III standing next to another god. I find it amazing that we still find well preserved artifacts from the past. Discovering things such as statues helps us better understand the people before us. Its neat how the egyptians were like architechts in a way. They were careful in their design and were meticulous in detail. This new find helps demonstarte how big of an empire egypt once was.

On thursday of last week police released over 100 photos of random women and children across the nation. The photos belonged to a former guest on the television show "The Dating Game", this same man was also known for his past of being a serial killer. Investigators are trying to find out if the photos will lead to other victims of Rodney Alcala the 66 year old serial killer. Alcala was lead to be responsible for several deaths from California to New York. Authorities ask the general public to call if they know anything about someone found in one of Alcala's photos. I think that this is really messed up. This reminds me alot about a scary movie plot. It amazes me that a person is so messed up that he would stalk his pray like an animal is scary to think about it. I think this situation all comes back to the thought of are people born evil or do they become evil? This is a very important question when thinking about how messed up people are to brutally hurt and kill others.

On Tuesday, the FCC made a vote and plan to speed up internet and air waves; shifting them to mobile services. What the FCC wants to do will increase the speed of the internet 25 times its current average. This will free up 500 megahertz of airwaves for mobile broadband services. They say that in the next ten years, billions of dollars will be poured into subsidized service for the poor. The United States is behind in internet capability and speed when compared to Asia and Europe. The FCC says that by 2020, the average person with internet will be able to download a 2 hour movie in less than 10 minutes. This would be awesome if it takes affect. Haveing a faster internet can only help and make things easier. Also getting to the same level as Europe and Asia would be good and get us back up at the top. The plan also wants to get around 100 million internet connections in American houses. Getting our society modernized can only help our economy. I think this is a great idea and hope it happens soon.

The current event I found today was that Facebook was recently named the most visited site on the web. It passed up google by a small margin but that is still very significant because Google has been the top for quite some time. I know this is kind of an entertainment blog but it definently applies to us. Almost everyone has a facebook and it is showing in the statistics of the amount of people using it. The article I read talked about how the way that the internet is being used is changing and the way people are gathering information is shifting from unpersonal search engines to close friends and social status. The internet is always changing and it should be interesting to see what tops the list next and how this affects people. The amount of time people spend on the computer on places like facebook is so great and it makes me wonder what we could be doing with all this time and how unhealthy that is. No wonder the Americans are fat.

Sorry, this wont have a cite. It's a community thing, but nothing that would make the news, although it should.

Sunday evening, I was home with my family. We start hearing sirens, police/fire department. That is nothing out of the norm, until they sounded like they were RIGHT outside our house. Well, we all go out on my porch to find a house on the street parallel to my block, on fire. For living in a mobile home park, house fires are horrible. Not only for the house on fire, but neighbooring houses as well because of the lack of distance between homes. This obviously effects me, because well I live here, and I would probably die if my house caught on fire. But, it effects my communty because house fires are terribly unfortunate. Yes, the fire department responded very quickly, but I went over the scene, and saw the house burning, and I've seen the aftermath. It's NOT pleasant. The house is still standing, but if it wasnt for the quick response of our local departments, I highly doubt the house would still be there.

For my current event I am going to talk about a women that is trying to achieve her goal of weighing 1,000 pounds or half a ton. She is trying to achieve her goal by eating about 12,000 calories of food a day. Not only is this a dangerous goal to try to achieve it is disgusting. Why in the world would you want to be known for weighing half a ton. UIt is also very expensive too. Her food bills are about $700 a month. It said that she makes the money by selling videos of herself in a bikini while eating. I don't know about you but there are some sick people out their, people who would want to buy something like that. This current event stuck me as suprising because the lady could die from trying to do this.

For my current event i would like to talk about how Tiger Wood's is returning to the Masters. Tiger Woods has been a very bad role model and yet he is still making a boatload of money. His sponsors are going through the roof. He has done many bad things and this just goes to show that even if you do something wrong, if you are famous you can pretty much always get away with it. I think this applies to everyone because not everyone is famous so people usually get in trouble for the things that they do wrong. However, when you are famous nothing of that nature will really apply to you. So i think it is bullcrap that after all he has done, he will still make all of that money and be able to influence people.

For today I will talk about how Tiger Woods is making his return to golf. He has left sex rehab and will be making his return to golf in april. Yes, this is a sports current event, but in reality it is so much more. Tiger had this reputation as a perfect role model up until about three months ago when it was revealed he has numerous misstresses. Now, I think he may be being a bit selfish again as I think he is putting himself in front of his family. I think he is more worried about golf than patching up things with his family. It is kind of funny because in his first public statement since the incident he said his main concern was about his family.

Recently, a couple fisherman found a human head and three limbs, but no body, near Feather River in California. Teh case is being investigated as a homicide, and they are unsure if the head is male or female. This is truly horrible that this happens in every day life. I would really hate to be the fisherman that found that and I would be so freaked out if that happened. Authorities said there were records of one of the limbs being severed surgically before he of she died. They are continuing to invertigate, however, it beats me why anyone whould want to do this. It is a truly tragic thing that people are twisted and crazy. The person was probably going on to lead a very nice life and maybe even had a family. Police said that they have identified the limbs to be a male's, however, they refuse to release any names at this point. OVerall, I think this is a very bad thing to happen. I don't know why people would do this.

My current event is about the hypothesis that women who take birht control live longer than those who do not. Studies show that women who took birth control in the 1960s live longer than those who were never on the pill. Other studies have shown that women on the pill are less suseptable to certain types of cancer. Some caners such as bowel, ovarian, and endometrial women are less suseptable to when on the pill. The pill affects each person differently so scientists are not totally sure of this hypothesis yet. I think that this is a very interesting discovery. I think it is ironic that so many people are against the pill and now they found a "good use" for it. It will affect the entire world if the hypothesis is true. If longer life means taking a pill everyday count me in!

Today I read the article, "Ex-teacher arrested in Chile; child sex abuse in Spain alleged" on CNN. Jose Angel Arregui Erana had multiple complaints about sexual abuse. He is accused of posting illegal images and videos of young boys. None of the young boys are willing to come out publically about the situation. I believe that's perfectly understandable. What really stood out to me though is that this man taught at a Roman Catholic religious order's schools in Spain. You would think that would religious teachers would be better than that. Schools should really do a better background check on potential teachers to prevent the harm of students. This effects me because it just goes to show that you really can't completely trust people. People are very well at hiding who they really are and everyone has skeletons in their closet.

In north carolina a teacher wrote loser on a students paper. This was from a relationship that he had with the student however the parents didnt like it. They thought it was offensive and mean. I think that this can be seen in many cases, because as much as students think they are teachers friends, this relationship is not relayed at home and parents take offense. For example when i first knew mr kay and my parents didnt they thought differently of him talking to me all the time and being so nice. However when they got to know him they realized what he meant at heart. I think the situaiton here is due to lack of communication. I believe that this was blown out of proportion by the parent.

June 2010 45 Detroit schools will be closing. 6 more following in June 2011 and 7 the year after. Some of these schools have been operating for over 90 years. These closures are to help make a 1 billion dollar revamp to schools that are staying open. Within the next few years the schools attendances will drop more than 30,000. I think this is another major impact to our economy. In the article all the teachers and staff will loose there jobs. This will cause more unemployment.

For my last current event I will talk about five Arab American boys that were accused of planning terrorist attacks in the U.S. and other middle eastern countries. These five boys from virginia had went to Afghanistan to defend muslims, they pleaded that they were not there for any terrorist activities. I think that this problem effects the safety of America, we have kids inside out own country that could be planning terrorist attacks against us. It may not affect White Lake because of its lack of diversity. The problem is taht it could affect members of our families in other areas. The U.S. should do more to find terrorists within its borders.

For my current I am going to discuss an article on "The New Doctor Death". Dr. Lawrence Egbert is the medical director of (FEN) Final Exit Network; this group advocates assisted suicide and is one of the most radical right-to-die organizations in the country. Dr. Egbert was responsible for helping John Celmer die; John had oral cancer and had undergone an operation to reconstruct his jaw. The procedure was a success, but several days later he was found dead. John's wife found information that pointed to Dr. Egbert helping him end his life. The group reviews the applications sent to them and they appove approx 80 percent of them. The differnce between these group of people and the people Jack Kevorkian assisted in ending their life is the people Dr. Egbert help are not necessarily terminal. I know dying is hard and painful, but do we have the right to end our own life? It's ironic that Dr. Egbert taught a class at Johns Hopkins University on medical ethics. It's scary to think what information he is giving to his class. Currently, my dad's Aunt and his cousin (from the same family) are suffering from stage 4 cancer; yes, this is terribly devastating for everyone in the family, but I would hate for them to end their own life. I understand assisted suicide is very controversial and it's hard to say what is right.

For todays current event i would like to talk about the job bill that congress just passed yesterday. This bill was ran through the senate which they approved, the final vote was 68 to 29. Now this bill will exempt new employers from paying social security pay roll taxes. It will also extend a tax break for business that spend money on capital investments, such as equipment purchases. Finally it will Expand the use of the Build America Bonds program. This will help states and municipalities fund capital construction projects. Its good to see that in some ways the government is trying to help. The last thing this country needs is an economic depression, and its nice to see that our government and president cares for our country. http://money.cnn.com/2010/03/17/news/economy/Senate_jobs_vote/index.htm?hpt=T2

There was recently a proposal to cut state aid to universities around Michigan. This story shows us that the economy is us as juniors also. Around this time next year we will be graduating high school and the next step is college. This proposal will increase tuition costs into college. Not all of us get good enough grades to get scolarships and cant really afford to go to a good college on our own. The fact that the tuition rates will be going up is not a good thing at all. College already costs a fortune and this is just going to make it harder for all of us to get a good post-highschool education. I think that the economy is really not helping our chances of succeeding in life and this is just going to make everything harder.

http://www.aolnews.com/nation/article/us-state-prison-population-falls-for-first-time-in-38-years/19403469

The U.S. state prison poplulation has gone down for the first time in 38 years. In January there were 1,403,091 prisoners in there, which is 5,739 less then the amount in 2008.

What I'm wondering is what they are doing with all the prisoners. It says that the prison populations have gone down, but it never says what they do with them. For all I know they're killing them or letting them go (although i'm not sure about the first guess). And I'm surprised the populations actually going down with the amount of crime in the U.S. these days. I'm glad they are going down in most of the jails now though.

Today I read about the Obama administrations no child left behind program for schools. In this they talked about how the United States is falling behind in education compared to other countries. And how we need to get focused on what really matters if we want to be able to compete with other countries. They have a plan that makes school districts that are struggling to show dramatic improvements and the U.S goverenment has a $50 billion budget. I agree with this article when it says that the United States is falling behind in education. I feel like our country thinks that just because we are powerful now that we will always be. But I think that in the future we wont be the most powerful because people feel like they dont have to try as much because of how many priviliges we have in America. I am glad to see that the governement is trying to better the education systems and get kids prepared to compete with the other countries who are quickly growing more and more power.

Today for my current event i chose to do Haitian kids allegedly taken by Americans reunited with families. Nearly all of the 33 Haitian children whom American missionaries allegedly tried to take out of the earthquake-ravaged nation were reunited Wednesday with their families, weeks after they were separated. The children, who range in age from 4 months to 12 years old, have been living in SOS Children's Village, an Austrian-run orphanage in northern Port-au-Prince, since late January, when the 10 Americans they were with were arrested at the Haitian-Dominican Republic border. On Wednesday, 32 of the children were taken home by at least one parent. Authorities are still working to verify the paperwork from the parents of the remaining child, a 9-year-old girl, SOS Children's Village said. It was not immediately clear when she could be reunited with her family. I picked this current event because the earth quake in Haiti is a really big issue right now. It is great to see that America has been such a big help with Haiti, because they really need it. I hope that Haiti gets good again.

A 7-Eleven convenience store clerk has died after he was shot during a robbery early Wednesday morning. KMBC's Jana Corrie reported that the clerk was able to call 911 after he was wounded, but died later at a hospital. The robbery happened at 1 a.m. at James A. Reed and Bannister roads. Detectives said the robber pointed a gun at the Singh and demanded money. Singh complied, but was then shot.

This event is nothing new, but the desperateness of robbers is. Murder is a life imprisonment or even the death penalty. To me I would not want to kill someone and destroy the rest of my life. The only real benefit for robbing and killing some one is, that you might get a couple hundred dollars out of it. You also will never get away from killing someone. Just like Macbeth when he kills the king. It is sad that people are so desperate for money that they kill someone for it.

For my current event i would like to talk about a very generous donation made by a kind man today. Patrick Roche, who is the co-founder of Roche Brothers supermarkets. Him and his wife Barbara, are used by the Center for Catholic Education to help train Catholic school teachers and administrators. They hoped that this donation of twenty million dollars would halp promote Catholic schools. Hes a retired grocer who credits Catholic schools for providing a crucial safety net for his family when his mother died. He has given $20 million to a center at Boston College to bring back Catholic education in America.
This topic does not personally affect me but i found it very interesting. Its weird how people are so tight on money but if a certain issue is very important to them they will go above and beyond for it. I think this mans donation was very kind and generous. Its great that when you have the money and you really believe in something you put your effort into it.

For my current event, i have choose to talk about yet another Toyota car company issue. Not only am i big for the purchasing of american cars, but i love to see other foreign companies being turned down. Recently, Toyota had recalled millions of cars due to complaints about the vehicles. One main, and very scary complaint was the fact that the gas pedals had been sticking in the car or getting caught under floor mats. Toyaota had promised the people to immediatly repair and fix these issues, yet many have still been complained upon. Today, toyota recalls have sky rocketed and are now starting to loose many customers. Just since october, Toyota has recalled over 8million of there vehicles. Honestly, i can not blame a single soul who backs out of the company. Its a sad thing to say, but i do not give one bit of support torwards foreign companys and would love to see us americans stick with out strongly made in the US products to keep our economy going.

They are going to try and close buildings that are ageing, traditional, and underpopulated. They also stated that one of the buildings to close will be a support building. I think this is a bad thing for kids who live in detroit. If there schools start closing and they already live far away it will be hard for them to get to a school that is even further. This just goes to show how much debt Michigan is in if we have to start closing schools. I don't know what would happen if Lakeland closed.

My current event is going to be able the drunk dad that left his baby in the oven. A drunk and high dad one night was stupid enough to live his 5 week old son, in an oven overnight. Luckily, the baby was unharmed and the dad called himself into a mental institution. He has no memory of placing his baby in the oven. Although the oven was slight ajar and was turned off (thank goodness!), who in the right mind will put their own flesh and blood into an oven? How this effects society today is that some people are NOT meant to be parents. I feel that parents should not be able to consume a large quantity of alchoal and do drugs while they have a child in their house that they have to take care of. People don't realize that what they do effects the people around them. Especially infants. They are so young, and if they grow up in a non-safe environment they will pick up their parents habits, because that's what they think is right. This story really upset me, because that is absolutely terrible and he shouldn't be aloud to have that baby any where near him until he has gotten all his problems fixed. I really hope one day people will think before they do.

Childhood obesity is one of the most common things starting to happen all over the world. Michelle Obama is trying to tell different junk food manufacturers to cut the amount of junk food down and try to make more healthy products. She also told different companies like coca-cola, General Mills, and Kraft that they should start thinking about what kid of food they are selling and how they advertise it to children all over America. She has taken the fight against Childhood obesity, which has tripled in the past three decades. This is good to know that our first lady is really trying to help her country in different acts like this. I think that it is also a great campaign to have because I feel like I am surrounded by unhealthy food choices when I don’t want to be. It is nice to eat unhealthy food once in a while, but I am one of those people who can’t eat a lot of it and like to make sure I eat healthy. I think that this campaign will help effectively because the one thing I know about loosing weight is that the first step is to eat healthier.

I did not have access to a computer today so I am doing all three today, please acapt them.

For my blog today I am doing it on a huge prescription drug scandle. Police officials are searching for the people who stole up to $70 to $75 million dollars in prescription drugs. The thief's cut a hole in the roof. Police think that there was more than person involved in the drug heist because that would have to be the case to be able to steal as much as they did. Police believe that there may have been a truck was waiting outside. I think that this is a very ballsy thing to do. It really makes you think how desperate people are getting for both drugs and money. It baffles me that crimals are willing to go to such a large exstent to get there hand on what they want. I think that this situation effects me becusae what if they is now a shortage on those perscription drugs that someone I know might need. This could potentially be a life threating thing for some people.

Today I will be talking about Google coming to your TV. According to New York Time and Wall Street Journal, Google would integrate applications like Twitter and the Picasa photo site onto a TV screen. This television application is still in its early stages. Google is coming out with its new android Smartphone to developers to use for the television project. Software could be popping up as early as this summer. This could make a big change for TV. Being able to use Google on a TV will make a positive change to television, in my opinion.

In San Diego federal prison a parolee admited to killing and 80 year old man and burring him in a concrete tomb that was built in the back yard of a park. He faces 75 years to life in prison. He He is guilty to a first-degree murder. I dont understand how someone could risk life in prision and take an innocent life. this really dosnt pertain to my life but its scary that there are sick people in the world that could do that. Taking someone eles life isnt in another persons hands and i think that viloence is wron expecally murder.
