Day 20
Chapter 18, Kim Wilde, really shows the idea of pop culture and it's influence. If Marjane were in the same situation today, what pop culture icons and fads do you think she would choose to embrace and why? From what country would they come? What would they represent? Choose five items and explain why you’ve chosen them.

If Marjane were in the same situation today she would probably wear the same clothes that girls her age in the United States would wear. Clothes are a great way of expressing yourself, and I think Marjane would want to be different and express herself. Another item would be music. The United States has a variety of music to choose from. Marjane would probably like that she can choose different kinds of music to listen to, such as rap, country, or alternative. Marjane would also like video games. A lot of people in the United States play video games. She is young and would most likely find video games fun. A popular game system wouls be the Wii. Marjane would not only like actually things, but she would also look up to some famous people in the United States as well. For example, Marjane would probably idolize a famous singer such as Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift is very popular with many teens in the United States right now. Swift also expresses herself through songs and tells stories about her life. So, Marjane might look up to someone who does that. Finally, the last item I've chosen is magazines. A ton of people in the United States read magazines. Marjane might like to read a magazine from the United States to learn about their culture. There are also a variety of kinds of magazines to chose from such as, teen magazines, sports magazines, or parenting magazines. In conclusion, Marjane could be infulenced in many ways from the United States and its culture and fads.

If Marjane were in the same situation today she would probably follow the crowd. Americans get most of their styles and fads from european countries. Most other countries get their styles and fads from America. So I think that marjane would be dressing the same way as most other kids her age. She would probably watch alot of the same tv shows. Music plays a big part in kids lives today. She would probably listen to alot of the same music as us.
If Marjane were in the same situation today she owuld probably listen to all kinds of different music. These days there are so many types of music to listen too. I think that she would like that there is a variety of different kinds she could listen too. She would love that there is a variety of tv shows to watch. Pretty much a show about anything you could think of, she would love it. She would watch all the same shows we do here. She would wear alot of the same trendy clothes we have these days. I bet she would love to not have to wear that veil. She would look up to maybe some of the same people we do here in america. She would read the same kind of books we do here, movies too. There are all sorts of movies adn books that she would love.

I think that Marjane would follow the main flow of America. She would dress like us and not in just one way because there is quite a few things you can go by. She would probably listen to the more popular music like Rap crap, country and todays best hits from america. Marjane may also eat different popular foods like pizza (from Italy.), Burgers and hot dogs from America, etc. She may also grow an accent from some country she listens to music from. Marjane would probably do close to the same schooling from neighboring contries. Lastly Marjane would most likely enjoy most american made movies at the time to fit in. I choose these five items because I think these were the more popular choices in pop culture.
i think that one thing she would choose would be music. its a way too express your self. Another one she would choose would be clothing. Like in the story on how she wares things shes not suppose too. Tv would also play a big part. She would also read magazines and books that other people her age read too. She would be just like another American teenager
If Marjane was to come to America today i believe tat she would be another typical American girl. She would get up, do her hair and makeup, get dressed and go to school. She would have her iPod and cell phone and she would be going with the flow and doing what everyone else is doing. Unlike in Iran here in America you are given freedoms that would be adorred in any other country. She may be doing what everyone else is doing but she has grown up around a strict government where wearing modern clothes is looked down upon. All of the items i listed represent the freedoms that you have. Sometimes us Americans take them for granted but Marjane would not if she had those things.
If Marjane were alive today, their would be plenty of icons and fads she would follow. She was into music like kids in america, and was really into dressing like a rockstar. An icon I think she would embrace would be Miley Cirus, who is from the United States. Marjane would probably dress how the girls in america dress. Marjane would also be into the new wonders of technology we have now. She would probably love the i pod touch. She would love having thousands of songs. She would also proabaly have a nice touchscreen phone. Cellphones are going touchscreen now, and marjane would love to keep up to date. I woulkd imagine her having a blueray dvd player. She loves entertainment, and a dvd player can play all of her favorite movies. I would bet Marjane would follow the trend of the people who cant get enough of twilight. Since she loves to read, she would probably get hooked like every other girl.

If she were in this predicament today i think that she would be connected to many different things. First off, music would unfluence her. I think that she would listen to normal girl music, alternative, pop, and some rap. Next,she would like the gossip and celebs. I think this is something that many people look around and read to see what is happening. Third, is books and reading. In the story she read all hitoric books with meanings. I think this would switch to modern day romantic novels like the twighlight series. Lastly, i think she would have ben more interested in guys. I think that in her religion back thenit was very small with teh veil, but i think that would have changed.
If Marjane were in the same situation today, she would probably choose to take on the United States fads. Clothes are a way to express yourslef. Marji seems like the kind of girl who would love to create her own style. Tv and movies are other fads that she would probably like to take on. Movies and tv shows are a great source of entertainment and can influence how people think and act. Music is another fad that she could embrace. There are many different generas of music, and can represent how she is feeling. She could look up to certain singers also. The 5th fad that she would probably embrace is food. There is many different kinds of food in many differenct cultures. You got chinese food, mexican food, Italian, and the typical american foods such as fries and a burger. Overall, there are many different influences becuase of fads.
If Marjane were in the same situation today she would probably follow the modern hipster European style we follow today. I believe she would care about her looks like most girls in this age. She would have an Ipod, cell phone, facebook, myspace, everything we have. All these items represent the freedom that we have every day that other people are not fortunate enough to have. We abuse all our freedoms and think everything else is like this in the world, even if we know it isn't. I think Marjane would enjoy our free-lance culture as much as she always has. However, unlike us, I think she won't abuse it and take it for granted.
If marjane lived today her posters in her room wouldnt be that different. In replace of Kim wilde she would probly have Taylor Swift from america, and for her iron maidon poster it would probly be Boys Like Girls. As for her jeans they would probly be from American Eagle or Holister or any of those stores. For her jacket, she would probly have a fur coat or somthing fancy. Her shoes could be a lot of things. She could have the Nike's like she already does or she could have Adidas or Reebok. As for her pin it would probly be a breast cancer pin or maybe a hippy pin. If she had CD's that she listen too, she would probly have Lil Wayne CD's and really any pop band CD. Now all these items are from the U.S. of Course cuz i really dont know anything about any other countries. I chose these items becuase today in our world, these are the most popular things going on. Taylor Swift is huge right now as the same goes for LLil wayne. I basiclly based it off of popularity in the U.S.

If Marjane were in the same sitiuation today i think she wouldnt follow trends. She had a caddiliac which is a nice car and was embarrsed to drive in it becasue she didnt like different social classes. sense todays teenagers are very materilistic i honestly thinks she wouldnt be a trend follower. I think she would express herself through school becasue she is really into reading about whats going on. I think Marjane would dress to please herself and not dress to impress others. I think that marjane would be very into politics expecially having our first african american presdient she would be very involved. I think that marjane would be very into "going green" because that is a big movement going on right now. I think that Marjane would like more mature icons becasue she is very mature for her age. I also think that Marjane would also express herself through charity becasue thats a big thing right now too, giving.
If Marjane was in the same situation today, I believe that she would dress like the teenage girls in the United States. Clothes is a way to express yourself and it's a way of showing independence. Marjane seems to like having her independence as well as doing her own thing. A second item that she would use that's really "in" right now, would be an iPod. An iPod is another way of having independence, because you can pick and choose the music that you want on there. You can have your own style, such as country, alternative rock, pop, and etc. Also, no one can tell you what kind of music to put on your iPod and such. I think that she would enjoy the freedom. Next, would be a cell phone. A cell phone is something that most teens and older have right now. It's a way of keeping in contacting with friends. They're literally just a click away. Since some of her friends moved away she could call them anywhere she wanted, whenever she wanted. She can keep in touch with them. Also, I think that Marjane would like to have a computer. A computer now a days is like, the entire world on one screen. You can basically get everything from a computer. It's one of the main sources of technology now a days. I feel that Marjane would be pleased with one because there is so much you can do on a computer. Lastly, I think that she would like to have any kind of game system. She has many choices, she can choose from a personal video game device, or a Xbox 360, and a Wii. There are so many games that you could play and they are a lot of fun. You can race cars, shoot people and with the Wii you can play baseball and other sports, work out, and do so much more. It is something that she can do with her friends with they hang out. I have chosen all of these five items because they are all something that a typically teenager has an enjoys, and with most can't live without. However, there are many other things to, such as books and magazines. But, I feel these were the best items if she was in the same situation today.

If Marjane were in the same situation today I believe she would be influenced by a lot of fads and pop singers popular in the United States. Most teens are influenced by the latest fashions, therefore, Marjane would be embracing some of the popular clothing items from Abercrombie, Hollister, Gap... a purse from Coach. Next, Marjane would choose to listen to Taylor Swift. Music is away to express yourself and teen girls can relate to her lyrics. Taylor is a very popular pop icon and I can see Marjane liking her music. Thirdly, Marjane would enjoy the video game the Wii. A lot of young adults like video games as a stress reliever. Wii has a lot of games that are fun; Marjane would choose to play the Wii because it is popular and away to have a good time with her friends. Food is another important item for teens, we like eating fast food and trying the latest burger; Iran would probably have a McDonalds, therefore, Marjane would visit her McDonalds on a regular basis. Lastly, Marjane would embrace reading the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. Twilight is a vampire-based romance novel that was a big hit for teen's in the United States. Stephanie Meyer's books are very popular and I think Marjane would be interested in reading books that other people have enjoyed. Clothes, music, reading, food, and video games represent items that individualize a person; I choose these items because these are some of the things young adults can identify with. These items could come from the United States and the fast food restaurants Marjane would find in her own country of Iran.
if marjane were the same today as she was then she would probly sing a diffrent style music not that diffrent just a small change like how metallica changed there sound. she would also probly be on some kind of guitar hero or rock band game lol. her style of clothing would change as well cause rock stars gotta look coool right?
I believe if Marjane were in the same situation today she'd probably like alot of the thing girls her age like these days. Clothes for example would be something she'd like. Clothes are a great way to express yourself. Marjane was very much into wearing clothes that showed she wanted to be different from all the other girls in Iran. Music would also be something she'd like of course. All music has some kind of meaning to it. She listened to music to get away from things and she could definately do that these days. I'd bet that she'd even like the Twilight series. I say this because she was really into love stories when she hungout with her friend Neda. Video games would also be something she'd like because they're fun and most teens, if not all, play them today. Lastly, she'd most likely be interested in Facebook or Mysoace considereing that everybody has one or the other these days.

If marjane were living in our time now things would be a lot different. Since then fads have changed so much. She would follow America as like she did before. She would listen to music artists like beyonce and lady gaga. They are one of the biggest artists of our time. She would probably watch all the same movies we do. Maybe play video games. The Wii is a big game system around right now, and she would probably want that game. She would wear skinny jeans like everyone else. With ugg boots or something thats in style. The last thing she might follow that Americans use is cell phones. Everyone has one here, so she would probably want one to. Every teenager needs one. But you never know what someone will like. Their is so much out their. And their are so many different types of music and clothes. Everyone is defferent.
I would think that Marji would probually have loved whatever was "hot" at the moment like most teens. I think she would have embrased our styles we wear today. She would love to express herself like that. Kim Wilde reminds me of Britney Spears when she was that huge star; I'm guessing Marji would have loved her. Also any pop icon that made it big and popular at the time. I personally believe it would come from the United States because she seems to really like the Western influences. I think they would represent independence and being cool to Marji. This is because Marji is continueally wanting the stuff that is banned; it's like she was the independence to chose what she likes. Also, if that was what everyone at school loved, I'm sure Marji would love it too. I would also think Marji would love movies. I think she would find it thrilling and interesting. Lastly, would be that she would love magazines. She loved books so I think a ton of people writting articles in something like The Times would be amazing to her.

If Marjane were in the same situation today she would definitely dress the same way that every other modern day American girl does. Clothing is a great way to express yourself, but i think she would really want to stay with the flow and blend in. Probably the largest thing that would influence her would be music. Everything we do today is influenced by music. One that people left out i think is that she would be a huge fan of money today. Money pretty much drives our society. Everything the average American does on the average American day is usually in somehow or someway so they can better themselves or make more money. Money would then be used to buy her things to help her fit in. Things like ipods, and crazy cell phone computers. She would also probably get the same boring education that the average American teen gets. Lastly, she would most likely be involved in some type of sport or hobby.
If Marjane were in the same situation today as she was when she got the Kim Wilde stuff, she would probably wear things and buy things that we do. America has had a huge influence on the reas of the world, obviously. She would probably embrace western pop culture icons like Miley Cyrus, or Taylor Swift. She would probably own a cell phone, and maybe an ipod, or a CD player. She might grow accustome to foods from other countries, like pasta, or sushi. these things would represent the influence of major cultures onto others. Five things that would probably have an influence on Marjane's life would be the radio, cell phones, television with hundreds of stations, trendy clothing and computers. The radio with all of its FM, Am, and now XM stations have begun to gain populartiy rapidly, and not only in america. Cell phones have become some what of a necissity in some places, and are becoming that in others. Telivision has been around for a while, but not like it is now. Now hthere are hundreds of channels to choose from. American fashion has boomed greatly, and has begun to spread world wide. Finally, computers have become a huge part of millions of peoples lives, and help to keeep the world connected.
If Marjane were in the same situation today she would most likely where the same style of clothes that girls in the U.S do. I think that in these modern day societies people feel that clothes are a great way to express themselves. I think that Marjane wanted to feel like she was different than alot of people by feeling influenced by another country. She would also like Music. All kids our age love music. She would be into all of the same kind of music; Rap, country, or rock. I feel like another thing that she would like to do is play videogames. All of the kids play videogames too, it doesn't matter if you are a boy or a girl. Every teenager loves videogames. Marjane might also feel the need to learn about the kind of stories that we have in the U.S. So she would look to see what kind of books the kids our age read. The most iportant things to our modern day society, i feel, is television. Television makes a huge impact on all of our lives. I feel she would be a fan of all the things that we watch today. In conclusion, i feel that Marjane's life would be completely changed if she was in our situation today.

Marjane would probably embrace clothing, jewelry/accessories, music, cell phones, and facebook, all coming from America. The reason why all these things would come from America is because at the time, she would have loved the idea of living here and the freedoms because we were the world power. She would embrace clothing the most out of all these trends because it's all about being in style and you can express yourself so much through clothing. Jewelry and accessories would be a big thing for her too because she liked them in Iran and it really makes a statement. Another thing Marjane would embrace would be music. Music is a huge part of life and I could see her as being someone who would base music on her mood. Cell phones are important because they are huge in technology and its something that almost everyone has. Lastly, facebook would be embraces by Marjane because it is a big thing and great for keeping in touch with people and putting her opinions on the internet and keeping up to date with things going on around her.
If Marjane were in the same situation today she would probably go with what everybody else is doing. I think she would wear similar clothes to what girls her age wear now. She would listen to the popular music tha we listen to today. There are many different sorts of music so that might make her like it even more. Marjane would probably eat different. If she came to America she would eat hot dogs and hamburgers probably, which come from America and maybe pizza because that is popular too, that is from Italy. But there are other foods too there is food from China, Japan, Italy and many other parts of the world.
I think that if she was in this day and age there would be many things she would embrace. One thing she would embrace would probably be the iPod from the United States, beacause she could put any song she wanted on the iPod. Another thing she would probably embrace is clothing fashions from all countries. She would probably like video games as well. The Wii is pretty popular at the moment. Marjane would probably enjoy movie theatres as well. She would enjoy the types of books that are popular nowadays as well.
If Marjane was in the same situation today as she was before, I think she would embrace anything that isnpopular in Western culture at the time. I think all of her fads would come from areas in north America, specifically the United States. For example, instead of her Kim Wilde and Iron Maiden posters I think she would choose people like Taylor Swift and maybe a movie actor like Will Smith. Instead of her Michael Jackson pin, she would get a breast cancer awareness one, or even a support our troops one. She might get the same type of jacket and a pair of Nike shoes. However I believe the craze right now with girls are Ugg boots. She would also probably gt skinny jeans. I have chosen all of these items because they represent different things in the west that are popular. This is why I chose them to be things she would want. Overall, things have changed a lot. Marjane is kind of rebellious so I don't think she would mind expressing herself and her interests by wearing these things.
If Marjane were in the same situation today, she would follow many of the fads of America today. I think she would get into some of the popular clothing trends in America. There are some ridiculous fashion trends that America goes through, such as the sequin purses and crocs, but I think she would view them as a way to rebel against authority. Another fad she might follow would be the popular rap music of today. Rap music is usually not modest or acceptable in the eyes of her religion I would guess, so she would feel like she is doing what she wanted rather than what her government wanted. I think an icon she might look up to would be someone like Miley Cyrus. She is young and already famous, and I think Marjane would see her as a good role model. I think video games would be another thing Marjane would love from America. I think the Wii would be something she would play, or even shooting games if her parents let her, because she was always wanting to demonstrate and be part of the revolution. The last popular thing from America she would follow might be the new handheld electronics like iPods. She could have games, music, videos, and so much more all in one. It would be something she could use when she just wants to be alone.

Clothes like hollister and american eagle, clothes that everyone likes to wear these days. She would also choose to embrace the music and having an ipod, because music really influenced her and helped keep her calm in stressful situations. They would probably come from this country. She would also have a cell phone, because everyone has a cell phone, and it would keep her in touch with everyone around her. And if she wasnt with her parents then she could keep in touch with her parents, no problem. She would really like the freedom, and not having to wear veils or covering up their skin and hair, she wouldnt have to worry about exciting men. She might enjoy having games, like an xbox 360. She seemed like the kind of type that would play videogames. She would also have all the posters, and denim jackets she ever wanted because she wouldnt get in trouble for wearing them, or having them up in her bedroom, because our country is free.

I think Marjane would embrace the Micheal Jackson craze since his death. Since it seems that he has become popular all over again. She probably would have a Robert Pattison poster. The Twilight series might be her favorite books. I say this because most girls that I know like Edward. Since she liked Iron Maiden, she would like to listen to Nickelback. She would still be wearing Nike shoes since they are still popular.
Marjane liked things that were popular back then. She took the styles that were popular in places like Europe and the United States and included them in her own life. The first item i think she would choose to embrace would be yoga pants and leggings. Girls everywhere are wearing them and theyre a very popular style. Therefor, i think Marjane would have worn them. Also, she deffinitly would have had an ipod. most kids these days cant live without them so she would have wanted one. Obviously she would have to have a cell phone because most teenagers cant live without that either. Another thing would be the wii. the wii has been a huge fad the past few years and thats something most teenagers have or want. Lastly she would be into junk food like pizza and fried. This is because no matter how healthy the teenager, everyone loves those foods from time to time. Most of these fads are from the US. Those are the things i thing marjane would be interested in if she were living as a teenager in the present.

I also think Marjane would like books, since she is into reading. Marjane would probably be into all the new technology we have today. She would have a new phone, computer, dvds and things like that. These trends represent an "all american girl" like having the so called perfect life and enjoying things. They would also represent other role models and people look up to. Five items that i could see Marjane using or havingin this situation today would be a new phone, because its popular to keep in touch with friends and family. A laptop,because we se it foor talking to people, expressing ourself and also homework.A dvd player,because we watch movies and follow trends like popular actresss' and trends they follow. Also an ipod, because you get to hear popular music and hatever music of your choice, its a way to express yourself. Lastly i believe Marjane would have a game system like a Wii, they are very popular these days, and people enjoy them with other people. Marjane would have a different lifestyle but with the same background, i think she would enjoy it.
If Marjane was in a similar situation today in these times i think that she would fit in with most of the fads that happen here. I think that she too would where Ugg boats and tight revealing clothes. She would probably idolize a singer like Taylor Swift or Miley Cirus. Most of her inspiration comes from american culture and how things are done here. This would represent how are culture is passed on to other countries but twisted with some of there own flavor. The first item i choose is a pair of Ugg boots. I choose this cause many american girls have at least one or two pair of these expensive boots. She would also purchase a number of different color T-shirts from the same store they would probably have the print Hollister or American Eagle on them. American girls need variety thats why they get so many different color shirts. Another item on her list would include an array of different perfumes. A girls gotta stick out and the more perfume the more likely you are to be noticed. She would also have to pick up the new Justin Bieber CD cause he is the newest hottest artist right now. Lastly she would have buy herself a mocha frappa chino latte from Starbucks for taste and the look of luxury.

I think pop culture is huge in the world today. I think that if marjane was to choose today she would pick a variety of things. I think that she would listen to rap from the united states. I think this because she likes to hear about people struggling and thats what raps all about. I think clothes are huge also. i think she would wear the same as u.s. girls do because she is not used to dressing like that. I think she would love american books because mainly they are stories of heros or heroism in some way. Satrapi, in my opininon would love video games from the U.S. because she likes to have fun and be free. As far as television goes I could see her loving our T.V shows such as CsI and Law and Order because she loves to figure out mysteries.

If Marjane was in the same situation today, her favorite bands, clothes, and people would be different. Most of these fads would probably still be western influenced (United States in particular). These items would represent who she is and what she believes. She would walk around in tennis shoes, blue jeans, and a T-Shirt, while listening to Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Lil Wayne (Yes, I used the Billboard Top 100 as a reference) on her iPod. She would go to school with a backpack filled with books, and then come home and write a blog entry for her favorite language arts teacher :) (or post about how much homework she got on Facebook). I picked these items (with the exception of the blog entry) because I believe that they have influenced western society very much. These kinds of things travel fast throughout the world. The things people like are bound to travel as time moves along.
I think that if Marijane were in the same situation today she would chose to embrace many American pop culture icons and fads. The United States have a major influence on the rest of the world. I think that one item she might chose to embrace is American music artists like Lady GaGa and Lil Wayne. The artists would represent popular music from the United States. This is because she was a fan of Micheal Jackson who was the pop star of that era. Another item might be the clothing lines like Hollister and Abercrombie. Obviously, this would represent the popular American clothing. Due to the fact that she is a modern teenager, she would likely be very interested in the Western styles. Marijane might also embrace teen magazines like Teen Vogue and Seventeen. These magazines would represent what most American teenage girls spend hours reading each month. I am guessing that she would find these very interesting because magazines are full of images that show Western style. The next item I am assuming that Marijane would embrace is perhaps common sports like basketball, baseball or football. She may not play in them but by watching and following teams, this would be a direct influence from all over the world and would represent the many ways that kids stay active/entertained. She may find sports fascinating and a good way to hang out with friends. The last thing that I think Marijane would embrace is the technology that is sky rocketing all over the world in this generation. I believe that her modern parents would have gotten her a cell phone and perhaps an Ipod. This represents the technology in this era. Obviously, the United States as well as other western places play a major influence on Marijane.

I think she would dress like a normal 12 year old in our society. I think a lot of current fashion is impacted by european fashion. Things that are fashionable to them come to the us and in a year we are dressing like them. like gladiator sandals. those were very popular for awhile, and also long summer dresses became very popular. I think she would probably want uggs because it seems like every girl has them or ones that look like them.
