Day 16

So much goes on in the world each day. Some good and some bad. As it is the new year, I would like to focus on the good for today's blog. You must find a current event that shows something positive in our society. As always, give a brief summary and then tell me how this event impacts you and your community. Lastly, how does this positive event show that we do not always have to dwell on the negatives that happen around us. REMEMBER, NO CITE NO POINTS.

For tonights current event I picked a positive story about how a dog saved a little boys life. On Saturday an 18-month old golden retriever saved her owner from being attacked by a cougar while in the backyard of their home in Boston Bar, British Columbia, about 130 miles north of Vancouver. This event is definetly positive, A little boy had his lifed saved by a dog. I think that this is a mirical. The boy could have been dead and the dog chewing on his bone in his bed, but some how knew his owner and friend was introuble. This boy can now say the a dog is truly a man or little boys, best friend. The dog took on a cougar and he was only 18 months old. If you ask me this dog may have been sent down from god to protect this boy.

There are many positive events occuring around our world today. For example, a law was just passed which states that smoking is to be banned in all public places( besides casinos) starting in May. My article explains that dangers of second hand smoke and that banning smoking in public places is a great idea. Not only does smoking harm non smokers, but it also affects people with health problems. People with asthmas suffer a great deal when going to restaurants that allow smoking. This new law impacts myself and my community a lot. I can't stand going to restaurants that allow smoking. I know that restaurants have smoking and non smoking sections, but that really doesn't help that much. I know a lot of people in my community that are happy about this new law. More people might go out to eat more because they won't have to worry about second hand smoke. This event shows us that even though its hard to think about the good things happening in life, there are still positive things occuring in our world. This shows us that our country is showing concern for people's health, and that not all events have to be negative.

For my current event I picked an article about the joy of giving. During the holiday season people feel generous and blessed. This was especially true for the 425 children Walled Lake Central High School adopted and provided gifts too. WLC chose Alcott Elementary School in Pontiac, and decided to adopt all of the 425 students. They delivered the gifts on December 15, and returned the next morning to watch the children open their gifts. It's amazing how generous communities can be to people in need. This impacts me and our community because the gift of helping others shows that people care and it is important to know that everybody is not just out for themselves. My cousin was one of these students that helped provide the less fortunate to have a better holiday. My grandparents have showed our family the postitve of giving to others and the joy it brings to yourself knowing you made someone's life a little better. Even though there is a lot of sad things that go on around us there is still the good things that bring happiness to others. The joy of giving not only brings the receipient happiness it gives the person giving a great feeling. This event shows us that our communities care about the less fortunate and not everything around us is bad.

A young girl named Sierra made a final wish before her death to raise money for her family to pay their debts. Sierra is terminally ill, and has 3 months to live. She planned to raise 6,000 to pay for her own funeral, and on Saturday night her wish was granted. People who knew Sierra and complete strangers came to a benefit for this girl and donated money for her family. The community got together and put a while party in dedication to Sierra. I think that even though it is a sad time for Sierra, it is wonderful that so many people wanted to celebrate her life with her and grant Sierra her Christmas wish. Even people who didn't know her wanted to help. Her mother said that this is her last celebration- she will never have a wedding- and that the people who came added joy to Sierra's life in a time of crisis. Through all the negative I see in the news, this one story is a reminder that in the bad there is always a positive story.

my current event today is about a mother and baby that survived a near death experiance. The lady was in labor and her heart stopped. The baby was almost dead. the staff at Memorial Health System in Colorado Springs, Colorado, sounded a Code Blue. She was in cardiac arrest. before her heart stoped she was verry healthy. The doctors have no clue what caused her ardiac arrest. They took the baby out by C-section and moments later the mother breathed again she was alive. This impacts everyone, no one wants to lose anyong that way. Its a good thing that they took the baby out, the baby ended up living.

For this current event I chose a video article from CNN about a girls dying wish. All Sierra Cooper wants is for her parents to have peace of mind. Although given her current situation one would think it would be hard to find. Thousands upon thousands of people poured in paying cash donations. Sierra wants to be able to pay for her own funeral. Her goal is to raise six-thousand dollars. She is holding a benefit with dinner, music, and a silent auction. This event impacts me because I am amazed. It seems that all we see today in these modern times is death and taxes. This shows how giving and kind people can be under the right circumstances. Why can't people be like this more often? This event shows that we do not have to dwell on the negatives because Sierra is living it up and trying to help her parents and leave a positive impact on everyone's life even though hers is almost at an end.

Throughout the years, the ability to recieve illegal drugs has become much easiar for americans. As this drug problem grows, the increase in deaths and violance also grows do to the use of these drugs. As the new year begins, i feel the use of drugs shall really be cracked down on by police and the government this way less young ones as well as adults are less likely to come in conact with these substances and cause violance. Looking for a case covering this subject i came across a situation which took place in the southern state of florida. The case started with a man by the name of Steven Alan Locasio who had been growing marajuana in a deep wooded area for a while. The police had come acrossed these substances and were determined to find the main dealer. The police department cleverly took the marajuana yet leaving a note at the area with a phone number stating, "Thanks for the grow! You want them back? Call for the price." Not ten minutes later, police recieved a phone call from Locasio offering them $200 dollars for the substances back. The police met up with Locasio later that day. The man was arrested and throwing into jail. This story gives me a good feeling that our nations enforcers are keeping an eye out for drug dealers and users and are not wasting a second to throw them into the slammer.

my event is on a story of a "Christmas miracle", as stated in the story. On Dec. 24 a mother and her son ‘died’ and then lived. Her heart stopped in the middle of labor then regained “life”, by chest compressions. Her baby boy was delivered by a C-section. You hear about women and their child dieing during child birth, not as much as a long time ago but it still happens. Some the mother dies and the baby lives or sometimes the opposite. Some times they may both die. But in this story they both lived. It shows that miracles can happen.

As we all know we have been in a recession that has done nothing but hurt us. The fist good news i've heard since new years is that ford reports highest sales since 2008. Automakers report that 33 percent increase in sales since the month of December. Not only is the company successful with selling but is also enjoying their new first year of Market share gain in increase. This is good news to me because my grandpa works for ford and its nice to see that their digging themselves out of a hole. Their finally coming together as a company and working as one. The new plan they continue to us is working and hopefully continues throughout the year .http://www.wxyz.com/news/local/story/Ford-Reports-Highest-Sales-Since-May-2008/aiWTLRPrrEiJc2tPmw6yUQ.cspx

For my current event I would like to tell the christmas tale of how Tracy Hermanstorfer and her baby were both saved on christmas eve. The 33 year old women died suddenly right before giving birth to her child, her husband at her side. A code blue was immediately sounded and a doctor ran from 100 yards away to the emergency room. Both tracy, and her baby's lives were successfully saved. This even impacts me and my community because it shows that our medical care is just getting better and better everyday. It helps me feel much safer, especially considering i just had a surgery done. I want the best medical care i can get, anyone does, so you feel safe. This positive event shows that we do not always have to dwell on the negative things because it shows how valuable a life really is and how beautiful life really is.

For the current event blog I chose the christmas suicide bomber. On christmas day a suicide bomber coming from Afghanistan attempted to light an explosive that would have killed everybody on the plane, and possibly some people on the ground. Luckily the bombs fuse malfunctioned and the pilots were able to land safely and nobody was hurt. This affects our community as the people of Michigan. A suicide bomber tried to kill people headed for Michigan, if It wernt for that malfunction people would be dead. Also with this reoccurring bomb threat security has stepped up in airports to reduce the chances of this happening. The problems with the bomb were a miracle, it shows that sometimes good people get lucky and bad things wont happen to them.

For todays current event, I have picked a positive story about how pomegranates can do much more to illnesses than we thought. Most people already know that pomegrantes are very healthy and can also fight antioxidents. A study in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that when the fruit's rind is combined with metal slats and vitamin C, they hold a promise in killing MRSA (the staff in fection). I remember when the MRSA infection broke loose a few years ago, starting in Toranto. At the time, it was a scary thing to get, just like swine flu is now. If a simple fruit can help make the world a safer place by fighting infections, then this is deffinatley good news. It could also give us hope that other cures can be made from pomegranates as well.

I think that there are so many fruits and vegetables are the most important things in my diet. When you eat healthy, you feel healthy. Some fruits actually help you with you immune system and some also help prevent certain health issues. The pomegranate is one of the fruits. Recent research says that the fruit has an acid that helps kill the enzyme that develops into breast cancer. It pretty much blocks cancer growth that could occur. Many women take different pills to stop the estrogen in their body to feed the tumor. The acid in a pomegranate could make it a little easer then taking so many pills. I just feel that fruit and vegetables could easily help anyone feel so much better if they ate more of it. This example is just one of many different ways fruit and vegetables could make your body stay healthy.

Today I read "Flight 253 hero recounts thwarting Christmas bombing attempt." This was a positive article because someone put there own life on the line in order to try to protect others. A man named Jasper Schuringa jumped over seats in order to tackle a man with a bomb. He didn't really think, but relied on his instinct. They say that his actions may have saved the people on the plane. The bomb would have had enought power to put a hole in the plane. Luckily this was not another 9/11 and none of the innocent people were badly harmed or killed. Everyone on that plane was incredibly lucky. This is deffiantly going to change things because airplanes are going to be even harder to get on due to security. This is extremely positive change too because we can change what clearly didn't work. I was disapointed that there were so many more negative stories than positive ones.

There are many good things happening around the world in the new year. One thing that I came across was a man who had explosives removed from his apartment. Police found TATP, which is extremely sensitive to impact, temperature change, and friction, in his apartment. A Robot removed the explosives safely and they were taken to a gravel yard for detonation since it was to dangerous to keep as evidence. This was a major find by police. They probably saved alot of people from injury or death. I would definitily categorize this as a good thing in the new year. This guy got around by a wheelchair so he probably didnt look like a person who would have explosives. Im just glad that the police are cracking down and finding things as serious as this.

Earlier this week my mom told me a tear jerking story. Picture this: it is December 24th (Christmas Eve) and you are clutching your pregnant wife’s hand when her life slips away. The medical team performs a Cesarean section to try to save your first son's life, but fails. It's nearly impossible to imagine the pain and despair that Mike Hermanstorfer felt as he cradled his newborn son’s limp body and mourned the loss of his young wife who was only 33 years old and in perfect health when she unexplainably went into cardiac arrest while she was being prepped for childbirth. Hermanstorfer saw everything he knew, everything he ever loved and his entire life "roll out" but a miracle occurred in the Denver hospital that Christmas Eve. As he held his lifeless son, the newborn suddenly began to breath. The medical was stunned by the unexplainable occurrence, but the miracles did not stop there. Within minutes, Tracy Hermanstorfer suddenly had a pulse despite the fact that she was totally lifeless for at least four minutes. “I had everything in the world taken from me, and in an hour and a half I had everything given to me" the very thankful Mike Hermanstorfer is quotes saying. The couple and their healthy son returned home just days later. In my opinion, this is by far, one of the most positive and wonderful stories. Obviously, it shows that miracles do happen and you should always have hope even when you think you have lost everything in life.

As everyone knows, smoking cigarettes is bad for you. They turn your lungs black, make your hands smell bad, pollut the atmosphere, etc. I'm not for smoking, but I'm not against it either. Slowly, but surely, cigarette producers are turning ALL cigarettes into fire safe cigarettes. Which means, if a smoker walks away from a burning cigarette, it will go out, it wont continute to burn. Or, if a smoker throws a cigarette out a car window, that cigarette will momentarily go out. This is great because cigarettes have been known to cause forest fires, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is put into cigarettes paper during manufacturing, in order to decrease burn rate. This will reduce the amount of fires that could unintentionally be started by neglected cigarettes. This has an impact on me because both my parents smoke, and my mom always tends to walk away from a burning cigarette. This new chemical that is put in the paper, apparently tatses bad, so says my mom. It's causing her to quit. If more people think that chemical tastes bad, that will cause more and more people to quit. Which will save more lives, and forests. (:

for my current event i found a video about a boy who was zaved by his golden retriever. The little boy was bringing in fire wood when a cougar started running at him. the boys dog, angel, stepped in and started fighting with it. Later the police came and killed the cougar, and angel got scratched and bitten up a little but other than that shes okay. This impacts me and people around me, because tif it weren't for the dog this boy might be dead. and that could happen to someone we might know.

There are not many subjects that are positive in the news. So I was glad that I found this video. The video is about how a boy’s dog protected him from a cougar until the police arrived and shot the cougar. The boy was not hurt, but the dog was banged up a bit and will make a full recovery.
It is good that the dog saved the boys life. It is in a dog’s nature to protect their family. Which I know when ever a UPS person comes to the door.

Today, for my current i chose Towns Rush to Make Low-Carbon Transition. The coastal town of Lincoln City, Oregon, has a lot to lose if nothing is done about climate change. The town sits 11 feet above sea level, and unchecked climate change could erode its beaches or flood the town. Residents are taking matters into their own hands. Last year Lincoln City committed to becoming carbon neutral through renewable energy, energy efficiency, and offsets. Communities like Lincoln City have long been ahead of Congress and the White House on climate commitments. This is a positive influence on the society because they are showing great passion for their town and i give them props for wanting to stop global warming. We dont always need to dwell on the negatives in life, becuase people who are willing to help their community and be selfless is what we really need to focus on.

Today, Canada's Transport Minister John Baird announced that they will start using full-body scanners in their airports. He said there was an order for 44 of the machines and 12 of them would be running this month. This is positive because it shows people are taking precaustions because of the Christmas day terrorist attack on the Northwest flight. Many other countries are also tightening up their securities such as Britain, Nigeria, and the Netherlands. This is a positive note becasue it means we should all be safer from terrorist activity on flights, and we can have more confident flights. This will impact me and the rest of our community in this way. It is not always best to dwell on the negatives around us because there are positive things in life. Saving people's lives and making for a safer worl is always a positive thing.

The positive current event i chose is about body scanners at the airport. This article pertains to British airports, British airports are going to begin adding more body scanners to there airports. there has been controversy over how detailed the scanners are, that the scanners can show detailed images of people bodies. I'm hoping that Britain push for body scanners will cause American airports to do the same. the last time i was at the airport i used one of the full body scanners, i didn't feel uncomfortable or think it was wrong, or feel like it was child pornography like some activists are claiming. I think that air planes are one of the greatest weapons for terriosts. i would feel a lot safer if the full body scanners became more prevalent in airports. this positive event that took place i believe will help people from dwelling on their fears of terriost attacks. so that we feel more safe and less fearfull of another 911.

The current event I chose for today is the Hubble Telescope showing the earliest photos of the universe yet. The images were released on Tuesday and help to date the universe at 13.7 billion years old. This is a huge step forward for science and is a very positive current event. In the article I read, it also talked about a new James Webb telescope that will be able to see even farther back, hopefully to when the "big bang" supposedly happened. This impacts me and the whole world because it helps us to learn more about the universe and can further our education. A positive event shows us that we do not always have to dwell on the negatives because good things are out there that can cover up the bad ones. Unfortunately, society is stuck on the bad events and doesn't generally appreciate good things in the news. It was very hard for me to find something positive to talk about and I think thats bad and we need to be more optimistic in the way we view life.

For tonights current event i will talk about the auto industry. 2009 was one of the toughest years on record for the American auto industry as it filed bankruptcy earlier in the year. In December sales for GM and Chrysler had a dramatic rise and things are looking up for 2010. As sales increase and things look up it is a positive thing for Michigan. The fact that the auto industry is picking up in America means that there could be hope for the economy. If the auto industry can get back on its feet it will mean more jobs for Michigan people. This is definately a positive thing for Michigan and our community.

For my current I'm going to talk about the advancement in curing cancer. Researchers at the University of Michigan have been testing mice to fine a cure to prevent breast cancer. They had found a receptor, CXCR1, on the cancer stem cells triggers growth of stem cells in response to inflammation and tissue damage. A drug developed to stop organ transplant rejection blocks this receptor, killing breast cancer stem cells and preventing their metastasis in mice, according to the study. Scientists pointed out that this work was done in cell cultures and mice. Repertaxin will not be avaiable to human patients until this now technology is perfected.
This impacts our entire world. With the advancement of certain medicines we can cure death causing diseases and ease the pain amoung Americans that experience cancer to loose a person close to them to the disease. The positive thing about this is that our world is getting more intelligent about the many disease present on Earth. We are educating ourselves and learning to prevent them to save lives.

So now you can no longer smoke in work places.Such as bars, your job, restaurants.Besides that you can still smoke in smoke shops, and casinos, and the privacy of your own home. This impacts me and my community by helping us. A lot of people get sick or die from smoking or secondhand smoking. I think this was a good idea. We don't always have to dwell on the negatives because this could turn out to be a really good thing for people. And it doesnt leave us thinking what else bad is going to happen next.

He said this creature resembles the species living around Hawaii, Polynesia and Mauritius. Taiwanese crab specialist Wang Chia-hsiang confirmed Ho's finding. For my current event I am writing about how a Judge in Alabama is now carrying a handgun in her courtroom. It is a positive current event because it could save people's life if a criminal tries to her someone during his or her trial. The reason the judge is carring a gun is because they are short handed on shiefs and don't have enough to keep them in a courthouse. I think that it is a great idea because if upset person on trial decides to try to break free and try to hurt someone it can be prevented. Also it is a positive thing because a judge carrying a gun will make a libral ticked off. Also there has been an increase in death threats to judges. The best part of this that only in Alabama would a judge have such a big handgun. Most judges that carry a firearm carry a small caliber gun, not what appears to be a .44 caliber or larger.

This shows that there really are miracles, and not everything that happens is negative. Even in negative times there can always be positive moments.

18 states have banned texting while driving. A new law in Oregon requires children under the age of 16 to wear a seat belt on an all-terrain vehicle or in a car while on public property. Same-sex couples will be able to marry in New Hampshire beginning January 1 under New Hampshire General Court HB 436, and the state joins Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Iowa in legalizing same-sex marriages. A statewide smoking ban in bars and restaurants that will take effect in North Carolina, the nation's biggest producer of tobacco, has drawn mixed reactions. all of these laws that were just passed are good for everyone in the world.
if there isnt texting while driving, mabye there wont be as many accidents. Same sex marriages allows people to show who they really are, and be what they want. Its good that smoking is band in bars, smoking kills you.

My current event is about how one man single handedly helped save over 300 people. On a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, a terrorist with links to al Qaeda attempted to set off a bomb inside the plane. Lucky for everyone aboard the chemical home made bomb malfunctioned. But if not for Jasper Schuringa of Dutch many more people would have been injured or killed. Schuringa's quick thinking helped him bring down the burning terrorist. He said he herd a bang like a firecracker then saw a man not moving and fettling with something in his pants while on fire, Schuringa immediately jumped at him and wrestled the bomb away from the terrorist. Its safe to say that Schuringa's quick thinking and smarts helped prevent the deaths of hundreds. Schuringa should be seen as a hero for his great bravery and courage. Its nice to know that people would do something like this to keep others out of danger. We saw it on 9/11 when the passengers of one plane over ran the terrorist and gave there life to save others. Its Heros like this that make this a positive event.

On December 30th, a man got run over by a train. (I know what you're thinking; "Chris didn't read the directions." He did . . . trust me.) The man got up without much more than a foot injury and a few scratches. Why? The train was of a new design put into place last summer. It has a "wider berth . . . [and] is much narrower than that of the new Type-4 [train]." Had it been one of the older trains, the man would have been killed for sure. I'm glad that this ended so nicely. This impacts all of society because it shows that technology can advance, and safety features make things like riding trains, building things, riding elevators, etc much better to use.

The news often shows the worst of what is happening in the world. We need to always know that there are positive things that happen around us that aren't exactly always expressed to us. It may be harder to find this positive news, but it is around.

For my blog today i found a very weird event. I guess its a positive, but its not a negative i dont think. A study showed that children that were spanked will grow up happier and more successful. According to the research, children spanked up to the age of 6 were likely as teenagers to perform better at school and were more likely to carry out volunteer work and to want to go to college than their peers who had never been physically disciplined. But, children who were still physically disciplined into adolescence ere more likely to develop behavior problems. In the UK they didnt like the outcome of the study because they think any type of violence is uneeded but their research came out true. This impacts me because as a child i was spanked for doing bad things or whatever. Hopefully it will make me happier, more successful, want to go to college and such. In this event it shows youdont need to dwell on the negativeof spanking children but it could maybe help you out i guess.

A very surprising positive event is tkaing place within the Ford industry. In december alone, sales increased by 15%. Economists believe that Ford might actualy be able to make a rebound for 2010. They also think that in a short time Chrysler and GM will be soon to follow. The rebound of the economy for 2010 is looking brighter and more positive than of 2009. I believe this is excellent news. I am glad to hear that Ford is progressing, even if it is slowly. My father is an electrician, who spent most of his hours working at the Rouge Steel plant. Now that Ford is doing better, hopefully he will be able to get more time in and better pay. It also affects the entire community and the state of Michigan in general. I hope this means the economy is ready to turn around and more people start getting their jobs back.

On January 2-5, 21 thousand college students gathered together to learn about God. They welcomed the new year by learning how to serve Him better. This impacts me because it shows me that there are so many people out there willing to serve God. It gives me encouragement to know that there are so many other people out there who serve God and learn about Him. There are good things that happen and good peope around us every day. This story shows lots of Christians that there not alone and thats always a postitive thing. Also it shows other people there faith. Even if you dont believe this is still positive because it can motivate them to join a group or maybe learn about God.
