Day 23

Discuss the idea of irony. How do you define irony? Give a personal example of irony? Then, think and comment on the following: At the opening of the scene 1, Oedipus states: “Until now I was a stranger to this tale, as I had been a stranger to the crime.” What tale is he talking about and how is this statement ironic?

Well i think irony is kinda like Karma. Say that i shot a old guy, and then maybe the next day i get shot by an old guy. That would be irony and also be Karma. A personal example would be when i took my friends ipod. Later he took my ipod then sold it. Thats irony. I took his and then he took mine. The tale he is talking about is how their former king was killed. He is new to it becuase it was the first time he heard it. This is ironice becuae he says he doesn't know who killed the knig, but in reality he killed the king. That is the ironic part.

irony is when there is somthing ironic about a story like when we were reading the story today and oedipus has no idea that he killed there king/his father and hes pissed off about how somone would do somthing like that and hes saying wat should happen to them when it was actully him the entire time. by the quote he means that hes new to the town like he wasnt around wen the murder happend which is also ironic because he was born in the town and he killed the king

Irony is something that means one thing and yet it is the complete opposite. The tale of Oedipus is a whole bundle of irony. The lines, “Until now I was a stranger to this tale, as I had been a stranger to the crime.” (Scene 1), explains how he doesn’t know that he was really the killer of his father. The ironic part is that the one thing he wanted to do was not kill his father and marry his mother, even though he did both. The tale of these men killing king Lauis is the tale he has been believing for years, yet when he finds out of his wrong doing, that is when he comes to realize that the tale has been about him the whole time. Of course this is the tale that he is talking about when he says that he was a stranger to until he figured it out. All, in all, the story about Oedipus is all about irony, and how much it can play into one persons life with out even knowing it.

Irony is a subject that can be very humorous, in return it can also end up being an extreme drama like in the story. I define irony as one thing happening and it ends up turning out the complete opposite of what was originally planned to happen. An personal experience is when my friends call me the dumb one out of the bunch and while trying to describe how stupid i am, they end up looking like a dumbass themselves (that happened today). Oedipus is talking about not knowing that he killed the king aka his father and he is trying to find the killer of the king. He does not realize that he was the person who killed the king and its ironic because he is praising to everyone to find the killer of their king and all Oedipus has to do is look into the mirror, if they had those back then?

I don't think their is a simple definition for irony. The idea of irony is that things aren't always what they seem. I would define irony as the outcome of an event, contrary to what was, or might have been expected. A personal example of irony is when my dad's co-worker thought he was safe from being laid off (bragging about it); and he ends up being the one to lose his job. The tale he is talking about is that he knew nothing of the tale of how King Lauis was killed and was making it his duty to find the killer. The irony of this was that he actually was the person that killed King Lauis and the prophecy of him killing his father and marrying his mother came true.

Jamie Diehr said...

Irony is when things happen that are somehow tied together in a way that you wouldn't expect. Usually the people who are experiencing irony don't realize it until the end. An example of irony would be someone who is very against drugs/alchol becoming a druggie/alcholic. They end up becoming someone, or doing something, that they were aginst. When Oedipus says, "Until now I was a stranger to this tale, as I had been a stranger to the crime," this is very ironic. He is declaring to everyone how innocent he was to this crime and knew nothing more than everyone else did. In reality, he was the one who killed the king of Thebs.

Irony is the idea that things aren't what they seem. An example would be if a guy that lived on the streets and everyone thought was a poor hobo turned out to be a millionaire. Even though everyone thought they saw who he really is, he turns out to be much different. A personal example of irony is when I had a perception of someone based on things I heard, so in my mind I was always against them. Then one day I got to know the person and found out that what I thought couldn't be more wrong. To respond to the quote; this is very ironic. Oedipus is saying that he had never heard the story before and didn't know anything about it. It is ironic because he is the one that killed Laius in the first place. Things aren't what they seem.

When i think of irony I think of karma, or the saying "what goes around comes around." For example say i stole something vauble from someone like an ipod, and then someone stole it from me. I got what i diserve, because i should have never stole the ipode in the first place. A personal example would be how i used to talk about how much i hate some of things my older sister has done in her life, now im sitting here realizing that i do some of those things. The tale they are referring to is about who their was killed. I think that this ironic because he has said that he doesnt know who killed the king but he really did.

Irony is an interesting idea. It is used quite a bit in books, movies, and plays. When one expects one thing to happen, and the complete opposite happens, you've got an ironic situation. Irony is often quite funny. When someone says "Yeah! Woohoo! I have homework. I've now got something to do on the weekend!" this can be interpreted as a humorous/annoyed expression. At the opening of scene 1, Oedipus says: "Until now I was a stranger to this tale, as I had been a stranger to this crime." This is ironic because he doesn't know it, but he is not a stranger to this tale. He is not a stranger to this crime, he committed it. Oedipus is talking about the murder of King Laius. This statement is ironic because he has no idea that he was in fact the person who committed this crime.

Sean Suehr said...

I would define irony as a situation that contradicts or is the opposite of another situation. A personal example of irony is I got in trouble one time and my mom knew I did it. She said, "Al rite, who spilt the milk?" and I was like, "yeah which one of you tards spilt the milk" then I realized it was me and I looked like an idiot. The quote from the book refers to the message from Creon who said that the old king was killed and the plague wouldn't leave Thebes until the murderer left. This statement is Ironic because Oedipus believes that someone besides himself committed the crime, when he was the one who really committed the crime. After the quote Oedipus talks about exiling the murdered; when he is the real killer and he would be exiling himself. Which would be an ironic situation.

Cody Kabisa said...

I agree with Zack on this one. I think irony somewhat life Karma. Irony is when your thinking that one thing is going to happen, and then the complete opposite happens. With irony, anything can happen and things can take an unexpected turn. Irony can be funny at times but it could also be dramatic irony.A personal example would be when I got a bad grade on my test. I got a 65% on my Anatomy test and when my teacher told me my score I said " thats awesome, my parents are gonna be thrilled." The opneing part of scene one is ironic because the one thing he didnt want to do was kill his father and marry his mother. He then ended up killing the king, which was his father and he married his mother. He didnt know he was married to his mother nor did he know that he killed someone, let alone it was his father.

I think that irony is like one thing but it means a totally different thing. When i argue about a fact that i know is true but it really is not that is an example of irony. The statement that he is talking about is the murder of Lauis. He says that he does not know anything about the murder but really he knows everything. He may not know that at the time he is saying it but thats the irony in it. Little does he know that he was really the one that killed Lauis. He thinks hedoesnt know who killed him but he realy does.

Irony is when something happens that either contradicts a thought or idea, or action. Irony is like doing something that you think will fix it when in reality it is causeing it. This can also lead for someone to be under one perception of something when it is something entirely different in the end. Irony can also be like a karma type thing when you do something to someone and the same thing happens to you. An example of personal irony would be, when I decided to not do my homework one day, then it is due the next day, then the next day I actualy do it, and its not due. Its ironic because when I actualy put in effort it doesn't matter. The tale Oedipus was talking about was the one with Laius and how he got murdered. It is ironic that he says he isn't familiar with it because he was the actual one to kill him. It is also ironic that he said he is a stranger to the crime when he also killed someone, being he didn't know it was the king.

The best way for me to define irony is basically; the thing that happens just at the moment that you never expected it to. I have experienced this many times. For example, one time "this kid" found a pair of shoes in the locker room at school and decided to take them. A couple days later, he sold them, and made money. A couple days after, just when he thought he had slipped by, his shoes were stolen from him out of the locker room. This is ironic because the kid who stole somebody else's shoes, got his stolen not even a week later. It is just the thing that you dont expect to happen at all. The tale Oedipus is talking about in scene one is the killing of the king. The statement is very ironic, because Oedipus is saying he is a stranger to the crime of murder, but what he doesnt know is that he actually killed the king himself. Now thats irony for ya.

ps: Mr Kay, I talked to you about why my blogs are late.

I define irony as something that happens thta is unexpected but totally predictable, it's kinda like karma. One time when I was in first grade, I was bored with some friends at my house jumping off things then grabbing things and swinging or climbing. As soon as all my friends had left, I jumped, missed and fell. That night I found out I had snapped my wrist clean in half. He is talking about the murder of Thebes' previous king, Laius. This is ironic because he doesn't realize that it was he who killed Laius aka his father.

I think irony means something out of the ordinary that happens. An example of irony would be if it started snowing in the middle of summer. Another example would be arguing about something i know is wrong but i still argue. It could be like karma at times. Oedipus is talking about he didn't know he killed the king. He doesn't realize and notice that he is the one that killed him. I think this is ironic, because he sadi he has no idea who killed the king, when really he does.

I think irony is when you do something to somebody, and then that same thing happens to you at a more inconvient time. Or when something really strange is mentioned, and nobody believes it will happen, but later in life it does. Everybody has had a moment of irony in their life. In Oepidus' case Thebes former king was murdered. Oepidus thinks that he had hear the story for the first time. Oepidus turns out to be really gung-ho on finding the killer because he dosent want to be murdered to. The ironic part of all this is that he is the murderer

I think of irony as an event or action that contradicts itself. An example of irony would be if a player on a baseball team told another teammate that hes going to get hit by a pitch, but he was the only one to get hit by the ball. Oedipus is talking about the death of the former king. He doesnt know that he actually was the one who killed the king. It ironic because we as readers know he was the one who killed the king, but Oedipus is oblivious. He doesnt know he married his mother as well. Messed up stuff.

The meaning of irony is the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning. So, basically irony is a contradiction. Its what everyone expects to happen and what really happens. An example of this is would be if someone was afraid of airplanes and never went on a plane in his entire life. Then the one time he goes on an airplane, it crashes. In the quote stated in Oedipus, he is saying that he is a stranger to the death of the king. When really, it is an ironic statement because he is the one that killed the king, which was his father.

Hunter White said...

Irony means that an action has a reaction that may be positive, negative etc. I define irony as opposite. I mean like when you wish it to not rain, it poors out. One example from my life was when I faked sick to get out of school the next day I really got sick. This seamed to be great at first but in return it efected me negatively. With Oedipus, he never wanted to kill his father but not even knowing it, he did. This makes that statement ironic because its like a complete opposite of what was wanted.

I believe Irony is present in nearly every scenario. If you have ever heard the saying, "What goes around comes around" i think its pretty much the same thing. I have many personal examples for me. If i went to a town and i was the tallest kid there, that would be ironic. It would be ironic because in reality i am one of the shortest kids. If i went to a place and i weighed the most, that would be ironic. It would be ironic because i am also one of the skinniest kids. An example of irony in Oedipus is when Oedipus kills the king. The irony in that is he didn't know that he did. The oracle had told hi that he would kill his father and marry his mother. He didn't want to kill his parents.(which were really his adoptive parents) In order to not endanger his parents lives he fled the town. Later in his journey he ran into a man. They started fighting and soon Oedipus had killed him. That was his father. Then he went to a town and solved a riddle that the sphynx had on the town. Once he solved the riddle they made him their king. In order to become king he had to marry the queen (his mother). Therefore, he did kill his father and marry his mother he just didn't know it.

I define irony as something being different in reality than it appears to someone. What we are reading about in Oedipus right now is filled with irony. An example of irony in my life is when I did something stupid that I thought I didn't get caught doing, my sister had actually seen me do. She told me later and I felt really stupid for thinking nobody had found out. In the quote, Oedipus is talking about the murder of King Lauis. He is saying that he did not know about the crime until this point because nobody had told him about it. He said he ahd been a stranger to the crime, which is ironic because he is the one who killed Lauis. He said he didn't know anything about it until he was told about it, but ironically he had done it long ago, thinking nothing of it.

Steve Snapp said...

The idea of irony can be described in many ways. My definition is when an idea is the opposite of what really happens or what people think. Relating to the play, the definition of irony can be described as the audience understands the situation but the characters don't. In scene one Oedipus's tale is the murder of the king. When he states he is a stranger to the tale its because he doesn't realize that the kings murderer is him. Its that what makes it ironic because its the opposite of what he thinks. He would of never thought he was the murderer. Thats also why he said he was a stranger to the crime.

I think irony is when something happens, and then somehting else happens that contradicts it. Kind of like karma, but not.. An example would be, when someone thinks smoking is gross, then starts up smoking themselves. In the opening of scene 1, he is talking about the death of King Laius. The statement is ironic because he wasnt aware that he was the one to kill Laius. He claimed to know nothing more than the next guy, which was true. Oedipus was completly clueless to the fact that he killed Laius. Oedipus doesnt know who killed Laius, but at the same time, he does.

What you hear is really not the truth. So find out for yourself. This is ironice becuae he says he doesn't know who killed the knig, but in reality he killed the king. That is the ironic part.

I think that irony is an outcome compleatly different then what was thought would happen. A personal example is over the summer when we messed up some girls house. We never thought we would get caught. Even after one of our friends was caught we thought that we could completely lie our way out of it. But that wasn't what happened in the end. We got caught and all of us had to write and apology letter. He talking about the king dieing and its ironic because he was the one who killed the king. So really he shouldn't be a stranger to the story at all, because he was there when this happened and he was the one who killed the king.

Irony is kinda like karma. If you do something bad and then get in trouble for it later on, thats karma, like irony. A personal example for me would be when I was messing around with hannah and I hit her on accident. After she nailed me back but ten times harder, cause she's Mannah. That would be Karma, also irony. The tale is telling how their king has died. Now he is new to the city. He doesnt know who killed the king, but in relaity he was the one who killed him.

I think that irony is a situation that turns out completly different then what was thought to happen. An example of irony in my life is something that happened last night. I'm usually always hanging out with my bestfriend every weekend, but this weekend she couldn't get a ride over. She was really upset and her mom was dissapointed in me cause she thought i was ditching jessica. I felt really bad and tryed really hard to find her a ride over. My other friend who i was with (who used to be jessicas bestfriend) told me not to worry about it because jessica's mom used to always freak out on her and she never thought any differently. it was ironic because my bestfriends mom doesn't like my friend at all. She thinks shes stuck up and bitchy. That statement in the book is ironic because Oedipus was not aware that he killed the old king. He knew he killed someone but he didn't know it was their king.

I would define irony as a word to explain a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning. It means basically that is contradictory of what you say. Oedipus is talking about of the event of the previous king being killed. He was saying how it was so wrong to not be looking for the killer of the king, However ironically enough the killer happens to be Oedipus. He does not know he killed the king. This statement is ironic because he was saying how the killer should have the same fate as the king. He is sitting there talking about killing the person who killed the king when it is him who will be fated.

I think irony is something that is the complete opposite of what was meant to be said or happen. An example would be, maybe, A truck that has those bumper stickers that say, "How's my driving." Most of the time, the people that have them, they are either going over the speed limit or running a red light. The tale he is talking about is when Oedipus kills king Lias. This is ironic because he is going to kill or banish the murderer, when it is himself. Oedipus has no idead that he is the murderer, so there is now way for him to know that he is digging himself into a very deep hole. Another think that was ironic about thi statement is that he is a stranger to this tale but yet he is the one who commited the crime.

The idea of irony is what you think is going to happens doesn't happen. It is very similar to the idea of karma. My definition of irony would be that if you expect somenthing to happen it probality will not. A personly example of irony would be When I was out duck hunting on the huron river with Hunter we went flying passed a group of people in canoes with my boat, then once we got a long way ahead of them I hit a submerged treestump and it snaped my boat motor's driveshaft and left us standed. The tale that Oedipus was talking about King Larious. His statement is ironic becuase he is so determined to catch the killer whan all of the time he was the killer. It is ironic because Oedipus was saying what is going to happen to the killer when what little does he know he is actually talking about his own punishment.

Saying that he is a stranger to what is going on. But really he is the whole cause of the plague and what is going on with Thebes.

I think irony is a good topic. To me it means basically you think one thing is coming but another happens. Its sort of a surprise opposite to what its supposed to mean. Kind of hippocritical in a way. An example or irony would be if i did something unconciousy and didnt know about it, then deny it like oedipus. He is new to the tale of knowing about the king who was killed. He is a stranger to the crime because he doesnt know he did it when in realilty he did. That is whats so ironic about it is that he is completely clueless as to whats going on.

I believe that Irony is something that appears different than it actually is. Say I stole a dollar from someone, and then when I go to spend it I find that I have a hole in my pocket. This can also be known as karma. A personal example of Irony is when I traded my headphones to my friend and then when I got home my sister had gotten me the ones for my birthday. Oedipus is talking about when he killed Lauis, he has no idea that the man he killed was him. He also doesn't know that it was his father. The Irony in this statment is that he is the one who killed Lauis, and he is saying that he is a stranger to the tale and the crime.

To me, irony is when we try so hard to stop one thing from happening, that, in our efforts to change what could happen, we cause that thing to happen. One example of irony in my life was last year when i was so determined not to fail a test in ap histort that i stayed up all night studying. Once i got to class, i couldnt remember anything and i ended up falling asleep. I failed the test, but i never did that again.

In the opening of scene 1, oedipus is talking avout the murder of Liaus, the former king of Thebes. He claims that the tale of the killing is news to him, but ironicaly, he knows it better than anyone, becuase he did it. Here, Oedipus is trying very hard to find and banish/kill the kings killer, when it is in fact him.
