Day 15

Thanks for your attention today with vocab and grammar. Make sure you study and are capable of using the words in a sentence. I will be in my room on Thursday after school for anyone who wants to go over skills for studying for vocab and grammar quizzes.

For this evening, we will look at current events. Again, make sure you pick an event that is not entertainment or sports based unless you can some how attach them to something relevant going on in our world. Give a brief explanation of the event and how it directly effect you, your community and your world.

You must Cite your source. NO CITE, NO POINTS and try and remember to do it in your original blog.

There are many problems going on with the world today. One is the economic crisis. Homeless people are finding temporary havens in tent camps. In cities all across the country people who have nowhere to live, have moved into tents. Local governments say that the tent camps violate housing ordinances, while homeless rights advocates are arguing that people who are having a hard time finding places to stay, need a permenent place to live. The Department of Housing and Urban Development showed an increase in homelessness among families, but the overall rates of homelessness roughly stayed the same. The tent camps also have rules about people living in them. Before a homeless person can move into the camp, their names are checked against a county list of sex offenders to keep predators out. Also, alcohol and drugs are prohibited in the camp. Life in a homeless camp is hard and never permanent. Residents live in cramped camping tents and in the last year have been forced to move nine times. Some states that have tent camps are California, Tennessee, Florida, Rhode Island, and Washington. I think that something needs to be done about these camps immediatly.

As we know this past weekend the Detroit Lions won a game!!! This was there first win since December 23, 2007 and this win has been well deserved by the city of Detroit. The best part of the win is that coach Jim Schwartz said "go back out on the field and celebrate with the fans." which is a nice jesture to all of the fans and workers of Detroit telling them thank you for all there hard work, and i believe that when the Lions went back onto the field it gave hope to the rest of the fans who stayed that the Lions care for the city. There are alot of people in the city of Detroit that think of sports as their so called getaway, and with the Tigers in the pennent race there has been a boost in moral around the city and even the whole state. When the economic downturn started here in Michigan there have been alot of people that have turned to sports to take their minds off of the real world. With that i believe that sports is one of the most importent to a states culture because it helps cope with issues that you may go through.

My current event is how the recession could be good for your health. An analysis of the Great Depression showed during bad economic times mortality dropped and life expectancy increased. The analysis also showed true during the recession in the 1980's and 1990's. Even though there were more suicides in the Great Depression that only accounted for 2% of deaths during that time period. During a recession people don't have the extra money to spend on items that are not a necessity. People decrease their spending on cigarettes, alcohol, fast food, and don't drive around as much. These habits increase the risk of mortality. Another theory is that people seem to come together & support each other during bad economic times. People are more tolerant of each other and try to help out when they can. We all have family and friends that have lost their jobs and try to offer support where we can. My uncle lost his job and we have all found odd jobs for him to do: ex. painiting, house repairs, etc... A recession is a terrible thing and it effects all of our families and communities. The only upside is that it does cut down on spending money on things that hurt your health.

Although there are many horrible events going on around the world, even the slightest changes will affect us teenagers the most. Health experts have recently proposed having a new tax on sugary drinks like soda in hopes that it will help bring a solution to the obesity throughout America. While this tax on "sugar sweetened" drinks will raise much needed dollars for the U.S. government, many Americans find the proposed tax ridiculous. I personally think that whether a person chooses to drink sugary drinks or not, is a decision that they should be able to make on their own. Putting a tax on soda would effect myself and others my age because the tax would cost pop-drinking people across the nation even more money. Money, that if you are a teenager like me is becoming harder and harder to earn. Although I do not drink a lot of soda or constantly find myself spending a lot of money on sugary drinks, I strongly believe that what you choose to spend your money on when buying refreshments is entirely up to you. Maybe instead of encouraging healthy behaviors by putting taxes on less healthy drinks, the government could make regulations to lower the price of bottled water. While it may seem that putting a tax on soda and other sugary drinks is not a very important current event, I believe that even the slightest changes will affect us teenagers the most.

Looking for a current even to do, i have came across a news topic today about the US income gap widening. The recession has hit middle-income and poor families hardest. This is widening the economic gap between the richest and poorest Americans as many job layoffs ravaged household budgets. The wealthiest 10 percent of Americans earned 11.4 times the roughly $12,000 made by those living near or below the poverty line in 2008. That ratio was an increase from 11.2 in 2007 and the previous high of 11.22 in 2003. Household income declined across all groups, but at sharper percentage levels for middle-income and poor Americans. Last year , the middle income fell from $52,163 to $50,303, wiping out a decade's worth of gains to hit the lowest level since 1997.

Personally thsi subject is important because these statistics give our generation a look at whats going on now. Knowing this, we can asume and hypothysize that this rate will keep decreasing as years move on.

In southeastern Michigan this year there were 6278 car-deer collisions. These collisions can do serious damage to your cars. This is a good reason the state should expand the deer hunting season. The deer are overpopulating and it is not a good thing. The reason this is a story on the news is because many times, drivers see a deer and try to swerve out of the way, and run into something else. This is a very dangerous issue. I think we need to expand the deer hunting season.

Recently, President Obama has announced that he is pushing for a longer shcoll day and a longer school year. This consequently means that he will cut our summers off short. He says that it will increase test scores and give the U.S. an advantage over students from other countries. However, experts say that this could have dire consequences. First off, it will cost more cause the schools will be open longer. They might have to cut utilities such as air conditioning, and even force the teachers to stay longer, which would mean paying them overtime. Experts also say that this could hurt the tourism industry because people won't be able to travel because of the shortened summer vacation. Overall, this will hurt our economy even more. This affects our community because it could raise our taxes and force students and teachers to go to school for longer. It affects me because then I would have to go to school loner and I wouldn't like that.

Today I read that places that are being hit the hardest by the Recession have lost a lot of worship. This is going to effect our country in long run because if the people have nothing to live for then what are we doing here. worshippers have moved away to find jobs, leaving those who remain to minister to communities struggling with rising home foreclosures, and unemployment.
Religion has a long history of drawing hope out of suffering, but there's little good news coming from the recession. Long after the economy improves, the changes made today will have a profound effect on how people practice their faith, where they turn for help in times of stress and how they pass their beliefs to their children.

A traveling doctor was charged with grand theft on the allegations of letting a man die to take his watch. When a nurse realized it was missing he tossed it into some bushes where the nursethen found it. I think that the world really is burning to the ground. What kind of world do we live in when a doctor purposely does not resuscitate a dying patient just so he can take their Presidential Rolex? I'll tell you what kind of world that is, a pretty crappy one to me. Doctors are supposed to try their best to save people. Yet doctors are taking presciption pain pills and selling them for a quick buck. Aren't doctors supposed to help the wounded and dying? At least that is what I thought. People like that give doctors bad names. It honestly makes me not want to go into medicine anymore. People like that make me not trust doctors. What happens if someone you know dies because a doctor neglected their duty that person? Would you look at doctors the same way? Would you trust them completely?

Today for my current event i chose American jailed in Japan for trying to reclaim his children. Had this custody drama played out in the United States, Christopher Savoie might be considered a hero. Snatching his two little children back from an ex-wife who defied the law and ran off with them. And here, Savoie sits in jail, charged with the abduction of minors. And his Japanese ex-wife -- a fugitive in the United States for taking his children from Tennessee, is considered the victim. This effects my life because i dont agree with this current event at all. I think it is ridiculous that he is in jail for trying to save his kids. And his wife is considered the victim, but really is the one that kidnapped them in the first place. The same goes to the community of Japan and the world.

Today I read about a poll on facebook that is being looked into by the United States secret service. On Monday Facebook shut a poll asking "Should Barack Obama be assasinated?" More than 750 facebook users had cast their poll by the time it was pulled. This event is relevant to our world because people feel so strongly against the president that they would want him killed. No matter what views you have on the president, you should'nt have to solve your dissagreements through murder. It is likely that President Barack Obama has to have tighter security because of the threats being made against him. If people are so agaisnt the president, they should have him removed from office, not killed. This also links to our community because so many of us have facebooks, and its possible that one of us may have seen the poll. Thinking that this poll was made so easily, other polls just as wrong could be made about others too. This is another reason to be cautous on what you put on the internet. It was not released what happened to the person who started the poll, but I don't think that they will be getting away with wanting to kill the president.

For my current event i would like to talk about the recent searches and observations on the homeless. With our economic crisis at its peak, many families are struggling around the world. On an average night in Detroit, more than 9,500 individuals and families are homeless. However, only 1,995 emergency shelter beds exist to serve this whole population. Over 15,000 people live on the streets each night in abandoned buildings. "Chronic" homelessness is due to drug abuse or choice, which is 30 percent of all homeless individuals. As more people lose thier jobs, more people can become homeless. People have been found dead in abandoned buildings due to the harsh weather in the winter and lack of emergency housing. This current event grabbed my attention because unfortunately my aunt is homeless in Detroit, due to drug abuse. She chooses drugs and staying there above all. She has been to rehab twice, once for 6 months, but it doesn't keep her off the streets. As much as we would love to go see her or even her come see us, its too dangerous. Living in the worst part of the city, shes had a rough time but still doesn't want to change. Its hard to think about how she spends her day down there, everyday. I went to a shelter to visit her, its truely traumatic. These places are disgusting and packed. In the winter, shes lucky to even get a spot. We always wonder if shes okay, or even alive. Its an awful situation but thers not much you can do about it.

On tuesdday in Washington Obama opened a new round of meetings to rethink his stratagy in Afghanistan. He was trying to figure out how many American allies in Europe would be willing to help with this. The top camander wants more people. Obama had a session with the new NATO secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen. He stayed noncommittal about the idea. This doesnt effect me much but it does effect alot of other people. People with friends or family in the army. They probably want them to come home. But if they need mmore people then that wont happen.

Today I read, "Crist stands by prediction Obama could face massive defeat" on CNN. From what's being said and what's on the news makes this seem like the majority opinion. As we all know, Obama is making his changes to our nation. However, it may not be the change we want. According to the article, the government is taking over more and more industries. This includes the auto industry and banks. I think people need to be independent with a little help from the government even though it's hard times. Every change that they are making is going to effect my generation. It may make us dependent and less of us will take risks in business. I'm not against or for Obama, but think that before we make all these changes we should figure out which changes are right for us.

The current event I've chosen to write about is a protest that took place in Guinea. there were over 50,000 protesters that gather to voice their opinions. they were protesting for a democratic nation and to protest the reelection of captain Moussa Dadis Camara. at first the troops used tear gas on the crowd than later open fired. at the end of the day 157 people lost their life protesting their beliefs. I think this ties into the lord of the flies. at least later in the story when there is more of a power struggle between leaders. And i think its an important thing in our day to day life. of course were not going to have such a large protest and death might not be involved, but for challenging a teacher or a parent. not rudely but i believe if its something you believe in, you have the right to express your opinion with that teacher. Sometimes they wont listen, but there are times that you can get through.

The current event I chose for today is the football player that died after a hit in a game. High school football player Drew Swank was hit in the first quarter of his football game on Friday and went flying. He never regained consciousness and spent two days after in the hospital. His brain kept swelling and he died. His organs were donated which was what he wanted, he talked to his mom about it right after he got his drivers license. This affects people my age a lot because it could happen to anyone. Theres always risk involved in everything you do but this is just really sad. The same thing could have happened to anyone on our football team or in any sport really and that would really affect everyone in school. Theres so many injuries that happen during games and its really scary to think that after just one bad hit, everything can be gone and taken away forever. I feel very bad for Drew's 6 brothers and sisters and friends and just everyone that knows him. But the good thing is that his organs were all donated so the gift of life could be given to someone else.

Najibullah Zazi, an immigrant from Afghanistan, pleaded that he was not guilty to planning a terrorist attack on NYC. Zazi, an airport shuttle driver, is the only identified terrorist so far. Prosecuters say he went to al-Qaida and recieved explosives training.

This is crazy. If NYC was to be bombed I don't even know if it would affect me too much. I would feel horrible for all the people that would die. I know that NYC would be in a panic most likely. For all we know they could be completely wrong and we'd be panicking over nothing.

For my blog this evening I'm going to write about the coverage over abortions. While reading the article on the New York Times, I discovered that people in both the House and Senate are fighting for the middle and lower incomes families, to have health coverage on abortions. They agreed on a 30 year old ban on the use of taxpayer money to pay for elective abortions. How this may effect our community is that, girls of all ages are getting pregnant, and their family may not have enough money to cover the amount for an abortion, so if the government can cover it, the low and middle income families won't have to pay or won't have to pay as much. However, I don't believe in abortions. I think that if you do it, they your at a higher risk to get pregnant, and if you do get pregnant, you have no one to blame but you and your partner. Now that they have a coverage for abortions, families, that end up in that situation, that cannot provide for the child, such as food, shelter, and clothing, and decide on the abortion have an easier way out than before. All in all, having coverage for the abortions was the right thing to do. Now if a teenage girl, who is not ready to be a mother, and cannot afford an abortion, can be covered. This article really doesn't relate to me, because I'm not at risk for getting pregnant, but I know that many girls close to my age are, believe it or not.

Although the United States has far overcome racial discrimination, it still exists. Studies show that African Americans die more often from Cardiac Arrest in hospitals. In-hospital Cardiac Arrest is an emergency condition that is strongly linked to processes of care. There is very little debate about the appropriate care for the treatment in pacients. Since racial differences in survial has'nt been previously studied after hospital cardiac arrest, doesn't mean that that people are going to start to influence treatment. I think that is wrong. African Americans diserve to be given the same treatment and care as any other American would.

the current event that really caught my attention was the suggestion that the accademic year should be extended. President Obama suggested this in order to get the U.S. school system caught up with the rest of the wrold. It wasnt until just now that critics relized that this might be bad for our economy. Critics say this call for a longer school year and a shorter summer will cause a number of unintended consequences. These consiquences include an increased cost for schools, major cuts to the nation's tourism industries, and a serious blow to summer camps. Schools would be forced to retrofit their facilities to the summer temperture, pay overtime to teachers and take on higher utility costs. With the current nonexistence of money, most schools just wouldn't make the cut. Even though this idea was put forth with good intentions, now is definatly not the best time to try it out, and it won't be a good time for a long time. It is clear how this will affect me, my school, my community and the country as a whole. No student really wants to stay in school any longer than they do now and the school can barely afford to stay open as long as it does. This would majorly affect our country because we cant afford to be spendin any more of te money that we dont have. This current event really got my attnetion and i cant wait to see how it unfolds.

My current event is The G-20. The G-20 brings together important industrial and emerging-market countries from all regions of the world. The leaders of the countries and organizations that make up the G-20 are meeting in Pittsburgh as of now. The Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors was established in 1999 to bring together important industrialized and developing economies to discuss issues in the global economy. This meeting in Pittsburg is to be recorded as their third official meeting in its history. The G-20 chair rotates amoung members and is selected from a different country each year. In 2009, the G-20 chair is the United Kingdom. Although the United Kingdom is in the "leadership" position, all of the other representatives of other countries still have fair rights in the meeting. This meeting allows countries' leaders to discuss different ways to improve our global economic crisis. The meeting of the G-20 affects me and my community. The meeting is setting economic policy that is affecting all of us. Because our state is economically troubled we can benefit from the final decisions/ideas of the meeting.

Everyone knows that tanning is bad for you. But does that stop more than half of teenage girls from tanning? The answer is no, in fact most of the teenagers do tan, and their parents don’t know and are even against it. In the United States there is a law that teenagers younger than 16 years of age must have parent approval. Most 87 percent of the tanning salons in America said they would require the 15 year old to get her parents permission to tan, 14 percent said a parent would have to go with her, but the scary this is that 71 percent said that they would allow the girl to tan every day as said in fox news. Salons often encourage overly frequent tanning by offering all you can tan packages for little amount of money, this draws in teenagers. You would think that the law would limit exposure to cancer linked ultraviolet radiation, but no they only limit the usage and they must have parent approval. Limiting exposure would save teenagers form ultraviolet radiation but all the government does about it is made a limited access law, when most of the salons do not pay attention to this unenforced law. This pertains to me because I and my friends go tanning, knowing this information makes me second guess getting in the tanning bed.

Lately they has been a lot of talk about the H1N1 swine flu. The prevoius swine flu vaccine was proven to give Guillain-Barré Syndrome, which caused them to have to make a new vaccine. This new vaccine hasn't caused any side effects like the last one. Small childeren need more shots than adualts, the reasoning for this is that their immune system don't respond well the the vaccine as a adults might. I can relate to this because my mom wants me to get this shot, like I'm sure many other parents do. I don't want any weird side effects like like the last one had even if it is rare. My sister also has a small child who is going to needthis shot. I obvoiusly wouldn't want here to react badly to this vaccine so it is good that they get more than one shot for younger childeren.

For my current event, I have chosen to write about the healthcare debate/rejection. Today, a senate panel rejects the public healthcare option. The two votes in the Senate Finance Committee were the first of several battles expected in Congress over a public insurance option. Supporters of the option disagreed and said they expected more success when the issue is taken up in the full Senate and the House of Representatives. One senator said, "The more the American people hear about the public option, the more they like it." This relates to my community because all the people that are layed off, or dont work have no form of healthcare. So, when they get sick, or need to see a doctor and have maybe a procedure or surgery done, they cant. My family and I been in the boat of not having health insurance, and being more than extremly cautious of getting injured or sick. Any unemployed, or jobless person, should have public healthcare provided.

This could directly effect me because if they need money, food, or supplies, my family could send a donation to help the cause. Also this could effect my community by getting extra support together to help the disaster victims. In current news Iran builds an air raid proof bunker for a nuclear site.
Now you maybe wondering why this affects us all the way in white lake, well due to advances in technology Iran has been able create Uranium enrichment sites without being detected, now that raises some suspicion to whether they could build nuclear weapons without detection. Now with the current war on terror, and suspicious reports of nuclear activity, people are becoming scared that there is an impending nuclear attack on the U.S. And while Iran doesn't have to actually hit any part of the U.S., they can just blow it up and the Electromagnetic pulse could wipe out modern civilization. I don't know what other people think of this but it really gives me an uneasy feeling that the U.S. hasn't cracked down on these situations.

There is a lot of different events going on, but I choose to do it on the group al-Qiada suspected terrorists. In New York Afghan immigrant Najibullah Zazi bought beauty supplies for use in making explosives with three other men. At this time they do not know where the other men are. Prosecutors said Zazi received al-Qaida explosives training in Pakistan last year and may have intended to carry out his attack on the anniversary of 9/11. Authorities said, three people traveled from New York City to suburban Denver over the summer and used stolen credit cards to help Zazi buy products containing hydrogen peroxide and acetone. Zazi was gaurded by a team of deputy marshals in a Brooklyn courtroom and pleaded not guilty. Investigators said Zazi urgently tried to mix up explosives in a Colorado hotel room in early September, and then drove to New York to carry out an attack, perhaps on the New York transit system. Zazi feared he was being watched and flew back to Denver September 12, and then was arrested a week later. This event effects me by it is one of the biggest threats the United States has. If this were to happen it would be just like the 9/11 attacks and many people would be killed, and injured. This is a scary thing to think about. It could happen anytime, and we have no way to tell when or where a bombing could happen.

In todays current event i would like to talk about the swine flu. Earlier this month President Barack Obama urged Americans to get vaccinated against the (H1N1) Swine Flu virus when the new vaccine becomes available in October. Today in the world the swine flu is one of the most concerned virus since the 90s. The vaccination being released in Oct is questionable because the health department is debating if it will do more harm then good. This effects me by knowing that if i was to get this virus our own health department isn't sure if the vaccinations are reliable. But the case for getting vaccinated is straightforward, Swine Flu may not be more lethal than ordinary seasonal flu, but it is unusually virulent and therefore likely to be more widespread. So overall the swine flu is a pandemic and needs to be taken care, or it might get out of control. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704471504574443113986261186.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

For tonight my current event is on the H1N1 vaccine they have developed. This is very good news. Now people don't have to worrie about it as much becuse that can just get the vaccine. This effects us even more because there have been caseses of the H1N1 virus in oakland county. 3 out of the 4 makers of he vaccine have already started to shipp it. They expect to ship about 75.3 million doses through December. Another vaccine maker has already shipped 5 million doses to a regional distibuter. They are sopossed to have enough vaccine for everyone. This will sure help our country and gt them able to focus on other stuff besides the H1N1 virus, like the economy.

My current event is about a bombing that occoured in Jolo. The bombing killed two U.S. Marines, the spokesperson for the armed forces was not clear on weather the bombing was buried in the ground, or just laying on the roadside. The explosion aslo killed a Sulu police officer. People are questioning why there were marines and a police officer in an area where there were land mines. This event shows that American troops are taking part in Philippine operations against separatist insurgents. The troops are helping because theyre trying to take down Abu Sayyaf bandit group. The US embassy is still investiagating the incident, so far no one has taken responsibility for the explosion. This occourance greatly effects our community and the world at the same time, because there are other wars going on that are involving US troops. These events could be taken farther, and start another war. At the state our economy is in, we wouldnt be able to take another war. Ways this effects me are that terrorists are still out in the world, and theyre getting more and more committed to take down their oppossers. They seem to be trying to get the point across that no place is safe to hide, but when there are soldiers getting torn up from killing terrorist, it re insures me that there are still safe places to take cover.

Very soon, with the census coming up, there will be a large rise in the number of identities stolen online. ID theft will go up because of convincing emails and websites crafted up by scam artists. These people steal identities every day through a tactic called social engineering. People instantly get nervous when they get an email from their bank saying that money has been stolen out of their accounts. These emails often state that for "verification purposes" they would need a victim to reenter all of their information, including the standards, like address and phone numbers, and even more personal information like social security number, bank account information, credit card information, and more. The census gives scam artists an excuse to send these bad messages. People need to understand that the U.S. Census Bureau will not request information over email and will not ask a person to enter information in unsecured forms. This problem is prevalent in today's society, and we have to be more careful than we have ever been before. In my community, people are losing all of their money from scams like these emails. This also affects me because my outside family has been scammed by similar people. While they have not had their identities stolen, they have had some nasty malware put on their computers because of a very convincing ad. We all need to be extremely careful and watch everything that we do online.

In Detroit the other day, a alleged church burglar was shot and wounded by a minister while trying to make his way in on a bike. He will be charged for breaking and entering. Charges have been authorized against Tyrone O. Badey, 41. He is also accused of breaking into the Westside Bible Church. This effects our community because, going to church is suppost to be a time where you get away from all the bad things in the world. Someone breaking into a church, and getting shot, is most likely going to have effects on many people. There going to think twice before they go to church again.

Najibullah Zazi is facing a life sentence in prison for intent to use a bomb. Surveilance videos show him in Beauty Supply Warehouse buying a dozen bottles of hydrogen peroxide. They said his plan was to attack on September 11, the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attack. This relates to me because no where is safe. We don't know who we can trust or when things are safe. The U.S. needs to crack down on airport security. The gov't should also do better background checks before letting Afgan's into the U.S.

For my current event I'm talking about Iran Agreeing to Open New Nuke Site to UN Inspectors. The pilot plant will house 3,000 centrifuges that could soon produce nuclear fuel or the payload for atomic warheads. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman says Iranian nuclear facility proves the Islamic Republic is pursuing nuclear weapons. This event relates to me because nuclear weapons are very dangerous. Nuclear weapons are jsu more reasons for us to go war with other countries.

Current event is about how President Obama is trying to make school days longer. Obama says the American kids spend to little of time in the classroom. He thinks that outs kids at an disadvantage with kids from different countries. The President would like to make school days longer and add more day to the school year. People think that it will end up costing more for the schools to have to pay the extra expenses. I personally think that we shouldn’t have to go to school more than we already have to. We are getting as much time in the classroom as we need. This plan will end up affecting everyone.

Christopher Savoie is now in a Japans jall after trying to get his kids back after his Japanese ex-wife took them away with her to Japan. Now she is a fugitive in the United States for taking his children from Tennessee. The Japanese’s charges Savoie with the abduction of minors. The story begins in the Nashville suburb of Franklin, Tennessee, with the January divorce of Savoie from his first wife, Noriko, a Japanese native. The ex-wife had agreed to live in Franklin to be close to the children, taking them to Japan for summer vacations. Savoie in March requested a restraining order to prevent his ex-wife from taking the children to Japan, saying she had threatened to do so. According to court documents, a temporary order was issued, but then lifted following a hearing. Following the summer trip, Noriko Savoie did return to the United States, and Christopher Savoie then took the children on a vacation, returning them to his ex-wife. But days later the school called Savoie to say his children hadn't arrived. Police checked Noriko Savoie's, the ex-wife, home and did not find the children. So he went to Japan to get his children back. If only the custody drama played out in the United States, Christopher Savoie would have his children and would not be in jail.
This event effects everyone that has gone though a divorce or is going though a divorce. It seems that there is always a custody battle over the children and it causes a large amount of stress on the kids. And when one parent takes them to another country when it is not in the rules of the custody the legal system their should let you get your kids back. It is more likely that you will not get them back and find your self in a jail cell because the laws of the US do not reach that far in other countries.

For my current event today i would like to talk about the ambulances that help out Somali. Violence, and wounded people lay in the streets and for some it is to late. However seven ambulances are donated from the local and expatriate Somali's. Residents can call to the ambulances for no charge and help will be on the way. Since there is no general authority in Somalia it is very hard for people to get help against all the violence they suffer. I think it is so amazing that people will help for free. They truly understand the need for humanity in the world. I hope that one day I can do something helpful for the world, and truly make a difference.

when i was looking for a article to wright about this one stood out. its about how three teenagers were beaten to death by 7 other teens. one of the fights was taped and posted around the internet. it was found out to be a gang fight. this stood out to me because it is scary that someone could do this kind of stuff, let alone being a teenager. it just goes to show how the world has changed, for the better but all so for the worst. people aren't safe anymore. we cant just trust anyone anymore. the world has become a place where no one is safe as they should be. even with all of the technology and laws to try and prevent this kind of things they still happen every day all over the world. it is sad but its the truth.

After looking over current events the past couple days it seems as if we might get screwed over, again. Obama seems to think that as Americans we are not smart enough. He feels as if we need to have longer school days and shorter summers. I personally think it is really rediculous. I feel as if we are in school a good amount of they year. Summer vacation is a good break and then we dive back into things in september. As it turns out though we are the country with the least school days. Currenty we go to school for 180 days. Obama wants to make it up to 200 days. This effects me by messing up my summer vacation but i think as a nation it would make ourselves more advanced and smarter.

Since i am turning 16 soon texting and driving is a very visited conversation in my household. As much as i would like to say im not going to do it, im sure i will. Everyone does it whether they want to admit it or not. The government wants to regulate it. Coming up they will be doing more tests and research on the risks of texting and talking while driving. Personally i think that there needs to be something done. It is changing lives, and not in a good way. However there is no way to really outlaw it, its all an honor and morality issue. Police really arent able to see what your doing as you drive. I tihnk that more reseach needs to be done and we need to come up with some reasonable laws to restrict or limit texting and driving.

"Toyota recalls 3.8 million vehicles: Mats can cause stuck accelerators"
-JUSTIN HYDE

My current event is the sixth-largest auto recall ever in the United States. Toyota has had at least 30 crashes and 20 injuries since the realease of the latest trucks. The numbers of cars that were recalled was 3.8 million. Im in the transportation cluster in OTC and we are learning the importance of safety, concentrating on work, and that little things matter. The recall was put in action because the floor mats caused uncontrollable acceleration. Thios relates to OTC because we learned that EVERYTHING matters and you cant overlook anything, not even little things like floor mats. Its crazy to me that a big company like that would make such a minor ovoidable problem. Not only that, but would cause so many crashes.

Shot down, that what I like to see, Obams's health care reform was rejected by the senate. Today the true feeling on what most Americans feel on national health care was revealed. Two of the amendment were rejected today because public opion greatly disagrreed with Obama's insane plans for the health care system. They were apposed by 10 Republican senators. At least we know the Republican party is looking out for America and fighting the bleeding heart liberals. This current event effects me because this would take away the good insuarance my parents have that they worked hard to get and give it to some lazy ass person who doesn't even attempt to try and get a job so they can get their own insuarance. People that don't try to help themself don't deserve the health care just handed to them. I feel this way because I am anti- Obama and anti-national health care.

Obama is still pushing for his public health insurance. He still needs 60 more votes in the Senate and is required to go more in-depth in his description of what he wants to do. Obama wants to overhaul the health-care system currently regardless of whether this bill passes or not. I do not want the Senate to pass this bill. Although the current health-care system is not perfect, it still works. If you work and deserve health-care, then you should have it. Also, I don't like how the public health care does not cover everyone. Certain people such as older people are less likely to be helped on this plan. The citizens who are working would be paying for others' health-care as well as their own with the public health-care system. My dad already gets good health-care for our family, and we can't afford to be helping pay for others' health insurance as well. The reason this bill is taking so long is probably a sign that many people do not want it.

Early this week in Moraine, Ohio a 17 year old mother was caught shoplifting at a Walmart. The female was busted shoplifting but she also left her 2 month baby girl in the store and just left her. Police say the women was stealing about $59 worth of children's clothing. Police also say she was initially uncooperative giving them false names and birth dates. As for the baby, she was taken to a near by child services to determine the child's future. i personally cannot believe how stupid this women must be. I understand her trying to make the best for her child but stealing is not the way to do so. This just proves that young adults are not responsible enough to care for a baby. I also deffinetly think that the baby should be taken from her and given to a family that can properly care for her.

The current event I am choosing to talk about today is all the hype about the year 2012. There are many predictions that the world is going to end in 2012, and things of that nature. I say that all these predictions are crap. People have already started preparing for the end of the world, just because someone else predicted it. In my opinion, you shouldnt believe all these predictions, they are just going to scare you, and make you forget to live. I really doubt the world is ending in 2 years. All we can do is wait and see what really happens,(I bet nothing happens.) So, all in all, I think this hype going around relates to me, because it reminds me not to be so gullible, figure things out for myself. Think critically, be realistic, and dont always believe what you hear, just because the majority is going along with it.

For my current event, I chose to do the drought in Kenya, thought to be caused by deforestation. Kenya survives on storing water during rainy season fromt the forest to farm and what not in the dry season. Now that 1/4 of the protected reserve has been cut down and settled, there is not as much water during the rainy season to be stored. The rivers are starting to dry up and people are suffering. Authorites are blameing the settlers who moved into the land and are getting it taken away from them and basicly just told to get out. They may be compensated for if they can prove the land is legally theirs. This is important to me because, first of all, it just isn't fair to give someone land and once they become dependant on it, to take it away. Secondly, deforestation is a huge problem. It causes droughts and shortages. People depend on the forest and it is just getting cut down at a massive amount. What worries me is that, if it is happening in kenya, it may soon be happening other places too.

Sorry this is late but I was out of town Monday and Tuesday.

Yesterday a big 7.9 magnitude earth quake rumbled Indonesia's Samatra. The latest report states that there could be over 1000 people dead. There has been major destruction and still thousands are trapped in buildings roads, etc. Three cargo planes are now dropping supplies to the needy. There supplies include tents, food/water medicine, etc. I think this is a bad tragedy because this brings back reminders of the tsunami that happened in 2004. A good part of this is that the new tsunami alert systems worked and got most people cleared from shores before anything happened.

There are lot of current events going on. For my current event i chose texting while driving, and what they're doing to prevent to growing deaths because of texting while driving. The government reported that,870 people were killed and 515,000 were injured last year in crashes where the drivers distraction was reported, often be mobile devices and cell phones. 18 states have made texting while driving illegal so far. This effects me because I, along with my friends and kids my age, am always texting. And we are getting to the age where we can drive. So driving and texting is starting to become common. Every person i hasve been in the car with has either texted while driving, or talked on the phone while driving. It's very hazardis. A a stupid way to die.
