Good week class. We had some decent information given about a few more countries and I really enjoyed our discussion after "Bald Soprano" on the absurdity of life. Next week, we will think about the perspective of how a story is told by reading another story and looking at the movie "Vantage Point." Make sure you have your outlines by Monday and have a great weekend.
I went to Challenge Day on Tuesday which always gets me thinking about Lakeland High School. Please tell me after 2 years walking these halls, your opinion of our school. What are some of the positives? What are areas that you think the school could be doing better?

My opinion of the school it is ok there are some good teachers. The hall sweep rule is gay I mean everyone is late every once and a wile. A positive of the school is that it gets out early. There are good classes that you can take in the school. The school should alow people to leave campuse for lunch. We have a good football program. The school should work on the food because sometimes it tastes like shit.
I don't think I'm going to have as much fun this year as I did my last two years. I am referring to the new rules in the school. I don't think the hallway sweep rule is exactly sensible. Everyone is late once and a while. On the bright side, I think it will help keep the "burnouts" out of trouble a bit more. I guess I'll have to experience this year more before I can judge it.
I think that Lakeland High School is a good school. There are some very good and helpful teachers in the school. There are some very nice students in the school. I think that the school could be doing better by offering a seventh hour or evening classes/study halls. I think that it would help boost many kids, including my own grade point averages up.
after two years of walking the halls i think or school is pretty good. there are things that can be improved. there are also a lot of positive things though. i think that seminar is really helpful. there are schools that don't have that opportunity. one negative thing is the new sweep rule. i think this is just going to cause kids to push the system and see what they can get away with. i think every kid will be tardy one or two times every once in a while.
As with anything, there are caveats. Such is so with our school. While, after walking these halls for two years, I do find the school a better alternative to the Catholic school I used to, there are some things that I think should be better, but realistically, cannot be changed either due to 'staff-reasons', logistical reasons and the infamous 'lack of money' statement.
First off, let me mention the wonderful things about the school. There are a multitude of teachers that respect their students and are extremely competent teachers as well as being amazingly funny. This is my favourite way to learn, humour coupled with good examples and hands-on stuff, and there are several teachers who are perfect examples of this approach and make learning amazingly fun and entertaining to do. Secondly, the lunch ladies deserve a shout, because they are always nice. Third, I think that the school is populated with many great kids whom I would enjoy befriending.
With that said, there are numerous things that I think the school should work on or change to make it a better learning environment. First, (you're welcome Mr. Figi,) I think the school needs Macs. I use Macs, I've grown up with Macs, and while I have nothing against Micro$oft, the school needs Macs. Or, new computers in general, but anything but vi$ta. The school needs better technology over-all. There are larger districts with less money, but better technology and nicer buildings. I'd love to redesign Lakeland to be high-tech, student-oriented and a more lucrative school to attend in general.
Secondly, I find that while there are a multitude of teachers whom have earned my respect and my friendship, there are many that I feel shouldn't be teaching. Some, don't know how to handle students. Others, don't know how to teach. I question the school's teacher-qualification policy due to that, because I've had some teachers who can't teach worth a damn, and it's not their method, it's just that they're too lazy to explain anything or give examples. The Medieval-scholasticism of endless rhetoric from a book without explanations and an endless torrent of worthless You-Tube videos in not the way to teach, it's just a way to keep a steady income.
Third, I'd like the people who come up with the most ignorant of rules to a) do a reality check and b) be fired. Some rules I agree with, such as the no-weapons rule and the no-smoking rule. Other rules, however, I find stupid, useless and ultimately freedom-reducing to the students. The administration has made protesting rules in general (not picketing, simply saying "I don't like rule XY," to a teacher, "get rid of it",) a suspension-offense, which I find extremely narrow-minded view and antithetical to the American ideal of freedom of speech. We should have the right to protest rules, that's how things are changed in America all the time. Protests. I do note, however that, by protest I don't mean strikes, I mean protests such as sticking flyers up around the school, (which isn't illegal in the United States under law and is considered a violation of Student's 1st Amendment rights. And schools have been shown to violate that all the time to protect themselves from 'messages they do not believe in' [See: Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, Cohen v. California] and I think that that's sad that we students don't have the same rights as adults because 'administrators' find it offensive.)
Thirdly, I think that the school curriculum has some serious flaws. My experience in private schools, (while church was torturous,) was that the curriculum is generally more challenging, rigorous and thorough in its structure. I find Huron Valley School's curriculum to be lacking in what we need, limiting in what we can get and a LOT slower than it should be. I was doing multiplication in 1st grade, and I didn't see it again until 4th grade. In terms of limitations, the school cut French, and won't pay for me to GO to a French class unless I've shown "previous interest". Alright... I planned to take French my Junior and Senior year, I put it in that stupid career-searching crap the school probably paid an arm-and-leg for that does nothing and that's not construed as 'previous interest'? I think the Board of Ed needs to get a life and a reality check.
There's another thing. The B.O.E., a group of stiff, narrow-minded bigots who decide what I can and cannot take because of money. You know, I feel the school does have money, the B.O.E. just don't spend it wisely at all. We don't need a revamped parking-lot at the middle school that doesn't even work and creates TONS of traffic, the parking lot for Lakeland doesn't need to be redone every year, and their butts don't need to be paid so much for doing nothing but arguing either, I can do that for free and make better policies.
This is nowhere near an exhaustive list of complaints and grievances which I can come up with, but oh well. In-all, I find Lakeland a great school to go to, but I feel that there are many things that need to be re-vamped.
My opinon of Lakeland high school is that it is a pretty good school. I feel like there are some good things and bad. I like how mostly all of the teachers are there to help you with whatever you need. I also like the fact there are so many choices, regarding what classes you wanna do. But, there is always room for improvement. I belive are school could do better in some things. I feel like the teachers should make the classes more interesting. The hall sweep, in my opinion, is pretty stupid and I think we should not do it.
And here comes the bitching about the hall sweeps, the eating and drinking policy, and the apparent lack of teaching ability of several teachers.
Let me open this by saying that as a junior, the school is very second-nature to me. I recall as a freshman, coming in on that first day and having no idea which hallway lead to where, which complex a class was in, and things of that nature. Hell, I didn't even know how to get to the cafeteria from where I was at - which happened to be my locker freshman year, 1555 - directly across from Mr. Schopieray's class.
Moving on, I rather enjoy attending Lakeland High School. As with nearly every student, homework is a bother and some of my teachers come into class with a stick up their ass, however overall the school itself is a nice place to go to. The students in it, rather the ones that I call my friends and acquaintances, are very cool and I'm glad to have met them. I learn something new each day in each of my classes, except Physics, and I altogether enjoy the experience that I go through each day at LHS.
But! This hall sweep rule that will be active this coming Monday is ludicrous. Don't get me wrong, I'm often on time to class, however I've had my share of tardies, and many of them aren't from standing around conversing or being late intentionally. I, like every human being, have to use the bathroom occasionally, and I often choose to do this during passing time, as it doesn't interrupt a teacher's lecture and it is most convenient for me. And now, with this hall sweep bullshit, it looks like the bathroom trips between classes won't be happening because if they do, I'll be "swept up" and sent to the office. Bull shit.
Also, some of the teachers that work here are absolutely horrid. Now I won't be specific, but a former teacher with a name that rhymes with "Teegardin" was absolutely horrible. I learned nothing in the class, and she was completely biased and unfair in her judgments. There are several other teachers like this, but I can't complain when we have teachers like Mrs. Gilmore, Mr. Kay, Mr. Beacome, and Mr. Schopieray around.
One last note; the food and drink policy really aggravates me. I mean come on, I'm seventeen years old. I think I'm of age to hold a sense of responsibility. Sure, accidents happen, but so be it. If water can be allowed in classrooms, so too should other beverages. And what's more is many teachers don't allow LifeWater or Vitamin Water or things of their nature because they aren't "clear beverages", but I guarantee you that if a student were to bring in Gatorade Ice, or even vodka, then a teacher wouldn't notice because it looks like water. Again, Bull shit.
Have a good one Marc.
This is my 4th year being here at Lakeland High and to be honest the only thing that really bothers me is the way people treat one another. We are all people and we deserve to be treated that way, its hard to walk down the halls and know someone is thinking something about you or judging you because you might not be "popular" or "gorgeous" i mean what is the definition of pretty anyways? everyone has there own taste in people and might think someone is good looking that you dont so therefore EVERYONE is attractive :) anywho, some things that i love about our school is how tight teachers are if you just show them respect. i have realized that if im nice, and dont give teachers attitude then they are totally straight with me and treat me like im a young adult not a child and that makes me feel wanted and special to go to lakeland high. i hope one day everyone can agree with me and learn how to just be mature. its not cool to be the class clown and be disrepectful to people, it will get you NO where, i know this from past experience

have a GREAT weekend Marc
Cody Dykes.
I have mixed reactions about our school. I have never really liked it at all, just for the fact i haven't been here for to long. I think people here are way to stereo typical. also i like Milford better because i went there for half of my schooling. But lately iv been getting along with people better. Also iv been making actual friends witch is good.
i think that we have a very good school with many good teachers. as far as academics go i feel that we are around the middle of pack. some negatives are that during lunch your not allowed to run out and grab some food and then comeback. i personally dont have a problem with the hall sweep rule because im not usually tardy but im sure that it wont last long anyway. not onlt do we have good academics but we also have a great sports prgram. for instance the football team has just sucessfully put another win in the books by burying central 23-8. now were looking forward to next week where we take on WLW at home for homecoming. GO EAGLES
From being in Lakeland High School for the past two years, it has made me have a lot of appreciation for it. Especially from going to school in Oregon for years, people around here don't see how good we have it at our school and what great educations we are actually getting. I think some things that we could work on our our strict rules this year and our dress code, I think this is high school and we don't need to be treated as 10 year olds. I think that we need to be making our own decisions and see where that takes us from there, rather then all the administration making them for us and just automatically giving us a consequence for our actions. But I do think we have great teachers at our school that really want the best for us. I think we have a really great sports program at our school and we really succeed and excel at that.
Really, I believe the student body as a whole should be more included in our decision making peocess. Even though we may be extremly bias towards ourselves, we can have some valuable insight as to what works and what doesn't. Like for funding, I would like to see more trips, less talk, more action. And on the whole seminar thing, it doesn't really do much for a kid like me. And even how remotely school related it is, I find it ansolutely residulous that we have enough money to re-do a feild twice in 2 years, pave a new walkway, and put up a new scoreboard, but somehow don't hate the $2000 necessary to re-surface 4twnnis courts once, but maybe it's just me.
I think that the school gives you the chance to make alot of choices. Students are able to go to O.T.C, and also pick whatever class's they choose. The teachers do a good job of making the students want to learn. The school has some areas in need help, such as better tardy rules. Another thing is the bathrooms that get locked.
Please tell me after 2 years walking these halls, your opinion of our school. What are some of the positives? What are areas that you think the school could be doing better?
I think overall, lakeland high is a pretty good school. I like how after your first two years you pretty much can choose what classes you want. I also like how all of your teachers will help you out whenever you are stuck on something. There are some things that I do not like about Lakeland also. Some of the rules that they have added this year are so strict and some of them are pretty stupid. For example, the hall sweep. Another thing that they could work on is making classes not as boring. Other than that I enjoy going to Lakeland. This is what I think about Lakeland High.
