There is the idea of what do we get out of being nice to others. This often rings true during this holiday season. Listen to the following song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i9G60wvH7Y then tell me:
1. Would you do what this man did? Why or why not?
2. Are people more likely to react this way during this time of year than other times? Why or why not?
3. If you answered yes to #2, why do you think this is true about people and society?
4. If you answered no to #2, what causes people to do nice things for others even if we do not know them?
5. Lastly, do you see yourself as a generous giving person? Why or why not? Give an example if you say yes.
Have a great weekend.

Yes cuz i really didnt need the shoes as bad as that kid. Yes people are going to act this way at this time. Christmas makes people think that they have to be nice when they should be being nice all year round. This is true becuase People get guilted into being nice so then they can think they have been nice people and get gifts from santa. I sometimes see myself as a giving person. I sometimes give money to people who need it but like if Zack Price askes me for some i will noot give, becuase he doesnt pay back even if he says he will. I also try to be nice but not im not alwyas. I try to help people if i feel like it basiclly, and that is horrible.

I would do what the man did because its the right thing to do. The young boy wanted to do something nice for his mother and he just needed a little help.I think people are a little more likely to react this way during this time of year, which is a shame. It might be because people feel they need to because of the time of year, not because they want to. Society now is more conservative. People look in their best interest and not those around them. Thats just how it is now. I see myself as a generous person because I have done simple deeds to people I have never met. For example when I was at kroger, an old lady in front of me was buying a couple items and was short a couple dollars, so I gave her the money. I didnt give myself a pat on the back because it was a natural instict.

If I was in the same situation as the man, I would buy the little boy the shoes for his mom. All he wanted to do was make his mom feel better and possibly give her something nice before she died. Personally, I would do this for anyone in this situation no matter what time of year. Although, I think that many people do this more during this time of year because they feel like they have to prove to themselves they are “spreading holiday cheer”. Other then that, some people wouldn’t give the boy the time of day and some would. Some people would pay for the shoes so then this women would have a nice moment with her child before she passes away. Plus this gives that child a good memory before his mom dies that he will cherish for years to come. I think I am a generous person. I have grown up with a giving family and I usually put others before myself. I think that in some cases I can make another persons day better if I would be generous them. Recently, I had a friend that went through a bad break up and I had a lot of homework that night along with being extremely tired. That night I made sure she was okay before I went to bed. I wanted her to feel better and I wanted to make sure she would be fine before she left. I felt that it was my responsibility as a friend to make sure she was going to be fine and I would never stop doing that either.

Yes i would do what this man did because he realized what the real Christmas spirit is all about, which is giving. The song starts off with a descrition of how little one man has and all he is asking for is to get a pair of shoes for his mother. It is really apart of the Christmas spirit because he is thinking of his mother rather than himself. I think that Christmas is the only time of year that people will act like this because Christmas is the only real time where everyone comes together and gives. In todays society, there is so much going on and some people may not have the time to give, but Christmas is a time that everyone has off and it is a good time to give. I dont believe that i am a generous giving person because i havnt done anything to be that type of person.

I would. I believe that if you are kind to someone, then they will be kind to you in return. Its like Karma. when you do good things, good things will happen to you. Whne you do bad things, bad things will happen to you. Its sad, but people are more likely to act this way during this time of the year rather than others. Personally, I think that people should be this way at all the times, during all times of the year. I honestly dont know why people act this way more during this season. It doesnt make any sense. What is the differencee between December 11th, and August 11th. There really isnt. Sometimes I am a generous person, while at other times I am not. I hope that people see me as a generous person. I will often pay other peoples way, and not expect them to return the favor. I do it not because I think that I will get paid back, but because it is a nice thing to do. Hope you have a good Haunaka.
1 i would do what that man did. If i turned that kid down then i wouldnt be able to live with myself. thatwas a sad song
2 yes i think people are most likly to be thoughtful and giving around this time of year its holiday spirit
3 i honestly dont kno the holidays just get ppl in a good mood i guess
5yes most of the time, believe it or not i help people out wenever i get a chance i try to do somthing nice every day
I feel that if i were to be in the mans position, i believe i would have done the same and helped the boy buy the shoes. In the world, many people are different and sad to say, some people would have laughed at the kid and told him to beat it. Though there are that amount of rude people out there, i feel the sharing season of christmas and gifts took a big toll in why the man helped by the shoes for te boy. Sharing is a big part of this season and to help out others really means alot. The one thing that i have really noticed about people and their givingness, can be judged and based off were they live. Many people believe hicks and rednecks are very dirty and mean, but in reality i have learned that down in tenneessee, the people are some of the nicest i have ever met. Aside from all the mistakes i have made in the past and present, i know and have been tld that i caryy a very warm heart and would do anything for others if in need. In life i have shown my generosity by doing things like toys for tots. Even though toys for tots is a great thing, people dont realize it but just being honest is also generous. Such as if a waiter is to give back more change that you acctually shall be recieving and you be honest and give the extras back really does show the mature and giving side of somebody.

I believe that, if Iwas in this man's position, I would do what he did. I say this because I am a caring/giving person. I like to help people a lot. I help my friends out all the time. I think most people don't act like this during this time of year. Mainly because people are too worried about themselves and their own families that they don't pay attention to others all too much. I think what causes people to do things like this is empathy. Some people actually put themselves into anothers situation and feel bad, so they help that person out. I do see myself as a generous, giving person. I help my friends if they're feeling down or just need somebody to talk to. I've helped remodel a house for somebody who couldn't afford it for free.

Absolutely, I would do what this man did. It wouldn't have mattered what time of year it was; when people need help and you are in the position to make someone's life better-you should. Giving is a great thing and you get as much out of it as the person that you help. I do believe that people are more likely to give more at Christmas because they are more generous this time of year. Something about the holidays put people in a good mood. People in society want to make sure that other's enjoy the holidays and don't get left out. My family always adopts a family at Christmas (this year a 3 year old girl). My mom had a lot of fun picking out clothes & toys for this little girl and I think that is because she knows how happy that little girl will be on Christmas morning. I see myself as a generous and giving person. When you help out a less fortunate person it makes you feel good inside; and I totally believe in karma. If possible, I always put money in the salvation army red kettles; if someone is collecting for a cause I will put in what ever I can. There are many other ways I donate my time to help others during the year. That feeling of knowing you made someone day's a little bit better is priceless!
Of course I would do what this man did. To me, situations like this make me think it's a test from God. So if I got a chance to help someone in need, I would do whatever possible. I believe people are less likely to act kind during this time of year. This is because everyone is more worried about the presents they have to buy. Stores are usually busy and people are rushing to get their shopping list done. The real meaning of Christmas is forgotten in the chaos. I think that pity causes people to do nice things for others even if we do not know them. I do consider myself as a generous giving person. I do whatever possible to help someone out. I know that if I ignore someone when they need it the most, it could impact their life in a negative way. An example of this happened at my work one day. We got a brand new vending machine and the lady in front of me was trying to buy a bag of popcorn. The machine ended up eating her dollar and she walked away without anything. So I tried the machine with my dollar and it ended up working. I then took out another dollar and bought a bag of popcorn. I gave it to the lady and said the machine worked.
I would do what this man did. There are just some things that make your heart move so much. Giving in situations like this cause me to feel good inside. I'm not sure if I would act differently any time of the year doing this. One can feel this emotion build up inside of them any time of the year. The reasons that people do things to help people even if they don't know them are quite vast. The happiness is a huge factor in this. I know that I can make someones day just by helping them out a bit, even if it isn't very much. I'm not sure if I am the most generous giving person. I however have been pondering what organization should receive a bit of gratuity for what they have done for me. As a younger person, I can only afford so much, do so much, and help so much, but I try to whenever I can.
Give an example if you say yes.
i think i wouldv done the same thing for the boy. if i wouldve seen something as tragic and as touching i probably woulda cried. this boy really had a true reason for presents. i think some are more likely to react this time of year, but good people would do this all ear. if someones mom was duying and she wanted shoes, someone would help this kid for shoes. i think it is true for society because people change during christmas time to show the good im themselves, which might noit always be there. i see myself as a generous person because i have been helping at foodbanks and such for NHS. Also, i helped a man carry all of his gifts out of the mall last week. this took longer than me buying stuff for my parents< but it felt good.
Yes, I would do what that man did. I could never turn down the little boy after his story and be able to live with myself. I would do it because its the right thing to do, especially since you could tell the little boy really needed the money. I do think that people are more likely to react this way during Christmas time, its just been made into a giving holiday and people feel like its the right thing to do. And yes I do think that this is true about people and society. People always seem to become more generous around Christmas time, I know I do. As you get older you start to see that Christmas is more about giving. And people start to realize all the good in their lives and start to want to help people who aren't as fortunate. And lastly, yes I do see myself as a giving person. I usually am pretty generous and giving all year, I like to help people. But, I love helping people around the holidays and helping their holiday be a little better, if they aren't as fortunate as others. For example, I loved doing toys for tots this year, and seeing the kids faces when they opened their gift was such a good feeling, to see that we made their Christmas a little bit better. And also, I save up during the year and around Christmas time, my grandma and I buy toys and stuff, for kids at, Grace Center of Hope and bring them wrapped so each of the kids have a gift on Christmas.

Absolutly, 100% yes. I wouldn't even question doing what that man did. Everytime I hear this song, I constantly think of all the things my parents have done for me, and I couldn't not help out a child like that, even if it meant for me to go without. Yes, I do believe people are more generous during the holidays. I don't understand why it is just during the holidays people are that giving, but I don't like it. I mean, that people are only generous during the holiday season. I honestly don't know why people do this. I mean, people in need, arent ONLY in need during the holidays, which means people should be more willing to give all the time. I do see myself as a generous person. For example, if there are "Bell Ringers" outside a grocery store, I always donate, even if it's only some loose change. Or, my family and I always donate our old clothes to St. Vincent, which is like Purple Heart. I mean, if the clothes don't fit, why throw them away if they can benefit someone that needs them?

PS. I hate that song, it makes me cry everytime I hear it! ):
Yes, I would do the exact same thing the man did. I would have wanted to make a difference in someones life. Well it depends, people do get more charitable around the holidays but with people losing jobs and not having alot of money, I don't see that happening. Peoples' emotions cause them to do nice things to others, but its more empathy than anything else. I kind of see myself as a generous person, because I give people mone when they ask for some if I have any.
I would do what this man did. It was a really sweet thing to do, and it was a good choice. Also because the boy needed the shoes more then I would. Yes, people are more likely to react this way during this time of year I think. I think people are feeling more cheerful, and thankful for the things they have. So, their more willing to be nice, and show everyone that their cared for at least a little bit. Lastly, I do see myself as a generous giving person. Whenever I have the chance I will do something nice for someone, or help them out with someone. At times, I will give people money if I have any or hold the door open for older people, without wanting something in return. I think its just the best think to do.

I would do what the man did for the little boy. No, people are in fact less likely to act like this because americans only care about themselves, they only beleive in personal gain. People now a days laugh at the lessfortunate and that just really pisses me off, that america is a place where people are supposed to respect each other. Also people dont really notice the poor, they just look and see a person dressed in rags and dont give a damn. I do see my self as a generous person. When I was with my step sister and her friends in Washington I asked all of them for any spare change they had because there was a homeless man out in seattle begging for money, so with the money we scrounged up we gave it to him. He smiled with a toothy grin and said thank you. I felt much better that day because I knew I made somebody happy.
I think i would do what the man did. All the boy wanted to do was doing something nice for him mom. He loved her verry much and she was going to die. I think that people act more giving and generous aroun this time of year. They do this because they think that this time of year you should be more generous. Really you should be generous every time of the year. Its just the right thing to do. I think i am a kind and giving person yes. An example i help my little brother sometimes with things if he needs help.

I definatly would because you just have too. Who wouldnt do this? Its for a great cause and his mom seems like she deserved them. I think people are more likely to do this around christmaas because they are more cheery and they know god is testing them. Society is like this because we want to be good people and help others this time of year. Not everyone can afford to have a great christmas so people try to help out. I think i see myself as a generous person b/c i know i would of done the same in giving the boy the money. Deep down i know i would and i think thats a good thing.

I would have bought the shoes for the boy like the man did in this song. The boy did not have enough money to give one last gift to his mother, and he deserves the help. I think that people are more generous during this time of the year. I think that during the season of Christmas is when I realize how much I really have, so that makes me want to be more generous. However, I think that people should be generous year round. The holiday season is a season for giving, but everyday you should be helping other people. People need help everyday, not just when you feel like giving. I see myself as a generous person, because I am quick to help people out. Last Thanksgiving, me and my family brought food to struggling families before we went to our own Thanksgiving dinner. It is a really good feeling to help someone, and to see their face light up when you have made their day better.
Yes i would do the same thing that man did. He's mothers dieing. People are going to act this way at this time. The holiday season makes people feel that they have to do nice things to others even though they should be doing nice thing all year around. I see myslef as a generous giving person. I always put my pennies in the tray at gas stations. Also at mcdonalds i give all my change to the make a wish box.
I would have done what he did. I guess I would realize he needed those more than I did. I think the majority of people would react like this during this time of year. I think this is true with people and society because everyone just brings out there inner morals. I see myself as a generous giving person. I always like to make others happy. During christmas time I always make sure I give more than I get and try to make everyone feel happier.
I believe I would do what this man did. Christmas is one of the happiest times of the year, even though people should do this sort of thing all year round it is good to see that people can do nice things at least a couple days out of the year. Christmas can put most people in a different mindset and bring people closer together. I think everybody would have their own reaction in this situation. It is nice to see people be nice and generous but there are times that people need to not be nice. The holidays definately bring people closer together and put them in a good mood and I do think I would have done what this man did.
I believe if I had the money and there was a less fortunate child asking for these shoes for his mom I am positive I would help him out. If this situation happened to me right now I don’t really think I would have the extra money with me but if I did I think not helping the kid out would be a horrible thing to do. I would help this kid because I think he needs those shoes more then I need my money. I believe people are more generous around holidays, especially Christmas time. People are more generous during this time of the year because Christmas is all about giving and being generous. In my opinion I do think of my self as being a generous person. For example if were going somewhere to get something to eat and one of my friends has no money and I have the extra money to help him out, 99% of the time I will help a friend out and pay for them. That is just one reason why i think im a generous person.
Yes I would do the same thing for that little boy as the man did. I would've done it because it would have made me feel good and I don't need anymore things that badly. I do believe that people are more likely to do something nice for someone else during the holiday season because its the time of giving, not recieving. I believe this is ture about people because because everyone likes doing good even if they always don't show it. People in society do nice things becuase they seem to feel if they do good then good will happen for them. Yes, I see myself as a generous giving person. I think I am because if someone needs help I will help them. Like today I went over to my grandmas and shoveled off her driveway and side walk becuase she cannot do it herself and I didn't want her to fall.
John McLean
If I was in this situation I would have bought the little boy the shoes. All the little boy wanted to do was give his mom something nice for Christmas, and show her that he cared. I do think that people this way a lot this time of year because its the time for giving not just getting. I think that when people do good things for others it makes them for good about themself, and this time of year people remember what its like to help put similes on others faces. I see myself as a giving person because i love to make people smile and Im always doing things that will make them happy. I dont expect anything in return, I just want to make people hapy.
Yes of course i would do what this man did. Yes people are willing to react this way this time of year because it is christmas and everybody is giving and nice on christmas. I think this is true about people and society because it seems like everyone wants to have a good christmas so why would everyone be in a bad and negative mood. Yes i see myself as a very generous and giving person. I always put peoples feelings and concerns before mine. I always get my parents really good christmas presents. I always get them something that they are really looking forward to and are actually going to use.
Alec Shoems 3rd Hour
Yes, i would of done what he has done because i think its the right thing to do. Yes i don think people are more likely to react this way towards this time of the year. Christmas makes people think that they have to be nice and giving and also caring. Even though they know they be being nice, caring and giving all year round. Yes i do see myself as a generous and a giving person. Ive always been nice to the people i care about, and also the people i don't really talk to as much. I always give people more than one change. If i don't know someone i will always be happy to find out some stuff about them and maybe even become friends with them.
I would most definitely do what this man did. I think that the little bit of money I would lose would not even be close to how much the compassion meant to the boy. I think if it were just a kid who wanted shoes for himself because he liked them but he had a perfectly fine pair already, I may not have helped out as easily. I think it was because he was trying to help someone else and that would make me want to help him. I do think people are more likely to react this way during this time of year than other times. I think around Christmas, people are more generous and likely to give. Although I think it is slightly sad in a way, I think that most people are in the holiday mode and give more around Christmas. Our society puts a lot of focus on giving and have the Christmas cheer, and we are reminded around this time that we are supposed to give. It is good that we have holidays such as Christmas to remind us to give rather than holding on to everything we have. I think as we drift away from the holidays, though, many people forget about giving or don't focus on it as much. I see myself as a generous giving person some of the time and in different ways. I honestly have almost no money to give, so I try not to give it away easily. On the other hand, I try to be giving of my time and compassion to people. My friend was upset and I told her she could call me whenever if she needed to talk because she felt like her family wasn't even helping her out. I told her that the people I care about come first, and I wouldn't mind at all if she needed to let some of her problems out to me. I think I am a giving person when it comes to helping people, but I don't think you have to have a ton of money to give to be generous.
Honestly this song made me cry. I most certiantly would have done what this man did. Who could see a kid like that, and see someone telling them they dont have enough money to pay for them. I know i couldnt just let that little kid walk out the door with their head down. Yeah i think people are more likely to act this way around Christmas because they wanna feel good, that they did somethings nice for someone on the Christmas holiday. I think its true because if it was a nice hot summer day and someone say a kid having trouble paying for soemthing they wouldnt think anything about it. They have two completely different thoughts around christmas and a normal day. I see my self as a generous giving person. I am more likely to help someone out before I help my self out. I love the feeling knowing I made someone a happier person. It's the best feeling in the world.
Yes i would have done what this man did, because I think its nice that a boy is trying so hard to give his mom something for christmas, even though he has nothing. I think people are more likely to react this way during this time of year because its christmas, and people are more caring, instead of being rushed. Because people are going to be more kind to eachother because its a season to be greatful of. Yes, because i always want to help those who are in need, poor, and cant do the things i have the privelage of being able to do. An example would be when im at mcdonalds and i get change, and i put it in the donation box. Also, the salvation army and other places are outside of a store, and ring the bell, asking for donations, i give them money.
Yes, I do believe I would have done what this man did, if I had the money of course. I think it is a very generous thing to do, that boy needed a pair of shoes for a reason more important then his own. Yes, I think people are more likely to act this way around this time of year. I think people, around Christmas time or any other holiday of this sort are more generous because they realize that there are people out there who are less fortunate and are willing to give more to help them. But during any other part of the year people don't really think about this, they are more concerned about keeping food on there tables. I think this is true, epecially now because of the economy and people don't have the money to give away all year round. Yes and no, I try to give not just money but food. I usually try to give stuff year round, but that can be difficult since I don't have a job so it is hard to do.
well first of all, my mom heard this song and started to cry...way to go. Of course i would give the shoes to the boy because everyone deserves a good christmas. They deserve to forget about all of their issues for at least one day a year. And i like to think that people would do this all year round. If i heard this kids story on august 3 i would still get him the shoes because its the right thing to do. But people are probably more gracious during this time of year because we want everyone to have a good christmas, and others are nice to us, so we pass it on. I do think that im kind of generous and giving, but only onder certin circumstances. With this child, of course, because he is making the best of what was thrown at him. Others however, try to live off of the generosity of others, which only hurts them more in the long run, so im not very generous to then.
(comcast was out, so i did this inteh library)
Mr. Kay,
I am really sorry that this is late. yesterday the youtube would not work on my computer so I am now at my grandma's house using her computer.
Yes I would do what this man did. This is because the poor little boy needed the shoes for his momma who was really sick. I actually believe that it is the right thing to do. I do think that people are more likely to react this way during this time of the year because during this time everyone else in the world appears to be giving which in my opinion prompts everyone else to give. I believe that this is true about people and society because during the holidays, society encourages people to give more during the holidays. This is seen all over. From television to in front of stores and malls with the salvation army bell ringers. I do see myself as a generous giving person because I am always willing to help and give to those less fortunate. It makes me feel really really happy when I do nice things. One example of me being giving is when I spent three hours friday night making these hand warmies with my mom that we plan to sell to raise money for a family friend who is battling breast cancer.
Yes, I would probably help the little kid, because if you sit there in line behind him and hear his whole story, it would be hard not to help him. Especially if you knew you had the money. Yes, I think the holidays does change the way everyone acts a little bit. It always seems like everyone is just a little bit happier, and a little more rushed. I dont think it is explainable, it is just the christmas spirit that gets into people. Yes, I think I am a generous giving person. An example is one time there was a homeless guy in macdons and I saw that all he bought was a little chocolate milk. So, I went to the counter to buy him a big mac and fries for the macdonalds people to give to him, and right as i did that he walked out the door. But it still would have been a nice thing to do.
Yes i would do what he did. i'm not the nicest person in the world, but when i see little kids, ecpecially the ones that are less fortunate, i feel so bad. and songs like these always make me cry. I think that this time of year people are more giving during this time of year. they become less selfish and think about others and the less fortunate. People these days are really greedy and it seems like they are only caring about them self. but there something about the christmas holiday that brings everyone together. Even people who really dont like eachother act like they are some what friends. I am kind of a generous person. if one of my friends asks for a couple of dollars or something i give it to them. if its not a large amount of money i usually don't make them pay me back.
In that situation, yes i would do what the man did. I am a very caring person and like to help people out if i can. I do think people are more likely to do favors like that during this time of the year. I would want to help the boy because he just wanted to make his mom happy while he could. People do nice things for others even if you dont know them, because if you were in that situation youd hope someone else would do that for you. "treat others the way you want to be treated" type thing. I see myself as a very generous person. I help people out when i can whether it benefits me or not. One tme i was at a store and a man that looked kind of scrubby, like a homeles, bought just a candy bar and a little thing of milk and didnt have enough money so i gave him a dollar so he could get the little amount he tried to get. Even though i didnt know him, i knew i wouldnt be payed back, i still did it to help him out and appreciate how good you have it sometimes, when others are struggleing... not to mention it probably made his day.
Yes I would have done what the man did. I wouldn't have needed them as much as he did. I think people are more likely to act this way during the holidays because of the spirit. During the holidays people get "in the spirit" and thus feel more towards each other. I think this is true about society because it is how we are raised. Christmas is the time for giving, they all say. So we get in the spirit of giving and give more. I see myself as a generous and giving person. I always give people stuff when I am done with it. Also, I feel mean when I say no, so, I usually say yes.
