For my current event i have decided to talk about the 6 Texas A&M basket ball players who have decided to begin a charity for children by shooting a basketball. The 6 students have set many records now and have made alot of money to put forth to charirty. The students go around to different sites and set up the worlds hardest basketball shots and are making money and donating it for this.
Personally i found this amazing at first to believe that they have actually found a way to make money by doing this. On the other hand i found it great, doing something they love but also making money and helping out young kids in need. It is amazing how people find ways to support others in life. If i were able to do so i wish i could find a way to combine hockey with donations for a charity.

My current event is on the suicide bombings that took place at Islambad's International Islamic University. There were two back to back suicide bombings that killed at least two and hurt 13 others at the univeristy today. A man and a woman were killed in the blast. All the victims were between the ages of 18 and 25. More than 12,000 foreign and local students are enrolled at the university where the attacks took place. I think we can all relate to this occurrence. Terrorists are seeking out places where there are a lot of people; and what better place than a university or a school. The taliban and other terrorists groups need to be dealt with. This is easier said than done. We are all at risk of something like this happening to our universities and schools.

There are many different current events happening around the world today. For example, new links to Parkinson's Disease have been reported. A new study confirms that there is a link between on-the-job pesticide exposure and Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's Disease is a degenerative brain condition in which dopamine-producing cells in the brain gradually die off or malfunction. Dopamine helps regulate movement, and as Parkinson's progresses, people have increasing difficulty walking, talking and performing simple tasks. The exact cause of Parkinson's Disease is unknown, but research indicates that a combination of genetics and environmental triggers might be a cause of it. This latest study, published in the Annals of Neurology, shows evidence that occupational pesticide exposure may be one of those environmental triggers. Researchers realized that men who are exposed to insecticides, weed killers and fungicides, were at greater risk of the disease. "We showed that the risk increased with the number of years or hours of exposure," Elbaz (of INSERM, the national French institute for health research in Paris) told Reuters Health. It is not yet clear whether lower-level exposure, in homes or the environment, affect the risk of getting Parkinson's Disease. This event affects my community because people who work in places where they our exposed to pesticides, might be at risk for getting the disease. I think that further research should be done about this issue.

For my current event blog today I am going to blog about the Detroit Shock being sold and relocating to Tulsa. The Shock is a great team and has done alot for Detroit. Detroit is well known for our sports. All of our sports teams are great and are always in the run for championships (with the exception of the Lions). Detroit is proud of our sports teams. The shock won three championships in Detroit and now they are leaving. Personally I think that this looks bad for Detroit. If the economy is so poor in our state that we can't afford to run our sports programs then whats gonna go next? Some people may say its just a WNBA team but if it gets much worse we could lose the Pistons, or even the Red Wings.

Today may current event is about the increase in college tuition. Average tuition raised 6.5% at public colleges and 4.4% at private colleges this fall. This is bad news for people who pay full price, because on top of cutting out things like faculty and cafeterias, the prices are still no where near the inflation rate. This affects all of us going to college because not only are many people worrying about how to pay for college, but it makes it even harder with the rising prices. The government gave colleges $4 billion less than last year. This is just another way the recession is affecting families. Some people have to take out student loans, which can take a long time to pay off. However, the article did state that students with financial aid paid $1,620 at a public college and under $12,000 at private colleges. It is good to know that there are many ways to pay for college if you need financial aid.

Tonight the Orionid meteor shower is expected to put on a great show for everyone. These meteors are from Halleys Comet, which rotates around the sun and leaves fresh debris in the atmosphere. Tonight is a very special night because the meteor showers left from Halleys Coment only happens every 76 years. In previous years, the meteor showers have been about 10 to 15 per hour. But this year there is a bonus. It is an additional 5 to 10 sporadic meteors per hour. These meteors don't have a relation to the shower though. I think that I'm going to stay up and watch the meteors. This only happens pretty much once in your lifetime.

For this weeks current event I am going to discuss what happened last thursday that was broadcasted live across the nation. For two hours, Americans watched their televisions in fear as a home made weather balloon blew across the sky and was recorded live for all to watch in anticipation. Now this was not just any weather balloon, a six year boy had supposedly climbed into it right before it uncontrolably flew 1000's of miles up and across the sky. His parents, along with most of the caring people across America were hopelessly watching and praying for the balloon to land safely. However, when it did land, the boy was not in the craft at all. A wide spread panic of how the missing six year old could have fallen out brought an emotional upset to all following the live television event. Fortunatly, it had turned out that the six year old had never actually been in the balloon. In fact, he had been hiding in a box in the attic at his home where the balloon was created and accidently released in the first place. Now, was this bazaar current event all a hoax or all planned so a family could have fifteen minutes of fame? That is up to you to decide, but this current event relates to each and everyone of us in the sense that due to televisions and live broadcasting, false panic can spread across the nation now faster than ever.

For my current event blog i have decided to educate you on 6 simple ways to save energy at home. The first one is to seal leaks. Seal the outlets in the exterior walls of your house, if you have the air conditioning on it will leak out of the outlets and cause you to waste money on paying for air conditioning. The second thing is to install a high performance shower head, this saves one whole gallon of water rather than wasting one. The third thing is swaping light bulbs. If you swap an incandescent light bulb with a CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) you will over a lifetime save 416 days of power. The fourth one is to wash your clothes in cold water. If you wash your clothes in cold water you will save alot of money. Most of the money it costs to wash clothes goes into heating the water. The fifth one is to close or open your blinds on the sides of your house that the sun shines on. This will cool or heat up your house, and will minimize the need for cooling and heating. The sixth one is to upgrade your heating and cooling to a personal thermostat. It costs less and it is less energy powering.

The current event i have chosen to write about is a suicide bombing that too place In Islamabad Pakistan. the bombers blew up parts of a university. they killed at least five people and 22 people are injured. I cant imagine how intolerant people can be. here are people who have a very much alike religion with small modifications and they cant get along. I hate the mentality that there is only one right way to do things. this also reminded me of planet of the apes. when the taylor found out that it was still earth he was on, but we all mistreated it and ruined it. I'm starting to believe that, that is a possibility. if two neighboring people cant get along, how will the whole world get along.

Today for my current event i chose to do Vatican welcomes Anglicans into Catholic church. The Vatican said Tuesday it has worked out a way for groups of Anglicans who are dissatisfied with their faith to join the Catholic Church. The process will allow groups of Anglicans, including bishops and married priests, to join the Catholic Church some 450 years after King Henry VIII broke from Rome and created the Church of England, forerunner of the Anglican Communion. The number of Anglicans wishing to join the Catholic Church has increased in recent years. The Anglicans will be able to retain their Anglican rites while recognizing the pope as their leader, Vatican officials said. The British monarch is the titular head of the Anglican church. Preserving Anglican traditions, such as mass rites, adds to the diversity of the Catholic Church. This current event pertains to my life becuase i love how our country is becoming diverse. In the earlier years this wouldnt even be considered so our country is coming a long way.

For my blog tonight, I am going to write about smoking. Cigarette smoking is the largest cause for lung cancer, for both men and women. Even after all the information people give out about how smoking is bad for you, you can get cancer, heart disease, people still continue to smoke, and the percentage is increasing. Just in the United Sates, about 6,000 adolescents, under the age of 18 are getting in to the habit. In America over 800,000 people become smokes every year. Overall, 4.5 billion American teenagers are becoming smokers. I personally don't understand why anyone would want to smoke in the first place. Smoking is very fatal, is gives you yellow teeth, wrinkles, bad breath, and make any side effects. Smoking is not just bad to the person who is smoking, it effects the people around the smoke. For example, a child growing up in a household of smokers. They are bound to get second hand smoke, by growing up in the environment of smoke. They could be diagnosed with lung cancer and heart disease, with not even smoking a day in their life, it's all from the second hand smoke. Why smoke if it can ruin your life as well as someone you love?

For my current event I'm doing mine about the charges of one of four teens charges being dropped. Eugene Bailey, 18, of Chicago, was arrested Sept. 26, two days after 16-year-old Derrion Albert was killed during a fight at Christian Fenger Academy High School. Bailey spoke to reporters briefly as he left the Cook County Jail on Monday evening, thanking Jesus for his release. And saying sorry for missing Albert's funeral while he was in custody. The three other teens that were in it are still facing charges. The cops said there was videos of the fight on cell phones and Albert was laying on the ground getting kicked and hit with boards. Albert was just and innocent person caught up in the fight. Albert's death and the disturbing footage of the beating quickly attracted the attention of President Barack Obama. Fenger Academy High School now is reciving an emergency grant of about $500,000 for counselors or other programs. This is related to my life by everyone is always being mean to anyone they don't like, or think is lower down than they are. Innocent people are getting hurt and killed for no reason, and it is dumb.

Today I will write about operation "proper". This is for our wounded troops to get a final closure of where they were wounded. This is a non profit program that is trying to bring our 30,000 wounded soldiers back to there place of battle to help them get on with there lives. This type of program has been here before. For instance back in vietnam this happened but not nearly as good of program like todays.
To me I like this idea. If a soldier really wants to go back to his battle place, let him. I know this is a great program to support as well. Being this is a non profit charity it wont eat our tax money, another benifit for the comunity.

For my current event I have decided to talk about the flu. A school in Mt. Pleasant has shut down because of the flu. Over 30% of the schools students were out due to flu like symptoms. The school asked the kids to stay home until Oct. 26th. This will hopefully provide them with enough time to get better. This affects me because I'm a student and interact with people. If someone is sick I could easily catch what they have. I hope that if someone has the flu they would stay home. If they dont, they are stupid to come to school and possibly get everyone around them sick.

For my current event I am going to talk about democrats pushing to reverse 247 billion, in projected Medicare reimbursement cuts to doctors over the next decade. Conservatives feel this is reckless and not a good way to invest money. However democrats are claiming that it is important to invest in quality care. I think this article really shows how complex our economy still is. Money is very important and people are trying to make healthcare more stable for everyone. In this unstable economy it is very important for people to feel a sense of security. Democrats think this will be very helpful over the next decade.

A group of students at a university believe that they have found proof that a man jailed for 31 years has been wrongly accused of committing a murder. This is interesting to me because I know that people have been wrongly convicted because of crimes they did not commit. While we believe that our justice system is fair, sometimes mistakes do happen. It is good that there are people in this world that can give these people a second chance. I still believe it is sad that somebody can be jailed for 31 years because of a crime that they did not commit. It is always possible that a person who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time will be found guilty for something that they didn't do. This can happen anywhere, anytime, even in our own neighborhood. We can only hope that the justice system will improve and that less people will be wrongly accused of of wrongdoing.

For the number of regular seasonal flu cases, 90 percent of deaths caused by it are in elderly people. With the outbreak of the swine flu, though, these statistics have been flipped completely. Now, 90 percent of the deaths caused by the flu are in ages under 65, and a quarter of that is of people under 25. There are millions of swine flu shots being distrubuted to help this problem. I have always thought that the swine flu was just overrated by the government. I think there is definitely more to it than I had thought though. It seems to affect younger people worse than the regular flu. I have already heard of a few swine flu cases around our area and it worries me a little. I do not think I am going to necessarily die, but if I do catch the swine flu, I could miss more school than usual. It seems like this year has been a lot harder than the past years, so missing too much of school would not be easy for me. I am doing my best to stay healthy, but many people are already getting sick with different things. I am just hoping that those who do get any type of sickness know when to take a day off so they don't get the rest of us sick.

There are many current events going on today. For mine i chose a girl that was killed by her garage. In Caldwell idaho a girl made a false 911 call to lure paramedics out of there station. She told them there had been nonexcistent traffic accident. As the paramedics were leaving she attempted to sneak into the garage. As she was sneaking in the garge door closed on her crushing her body. She died of internal injuries. Caldwell Police Chief Chris Allgood said that they will never know why she was trying ot gain access into the station. But they think it was to steal the prescription medication stored in the station. This relates to me because i have a garage and other people have garages, and i now now garages can be very dangerous. :)

For my blog I found an article on a new law in Oklahoma on abortion. This law will require doctors to release detailed information, which will be posted on a public web site, about all women who have abortions in the state. The law will take effect on November 1st. Doctors who fail to provide that information will be criminally penalized and stripped of their medical licenses. This law is meant to violate the women’s privacy and scare them out of abortion. Their names will not be shown on the website, but a list of information, like the county the abortion is performed. Even though it does not give very specific information, it can still be easy to find out who that person is. I think this is a complete violation of privacy. Whether it gives the name or not, it still shouldn’t be put out there. Because it’s a personal decision, and it should stay personal. This relates to me because I’m a girl and if I ever was in that kind of situation I wouldn’t want that being put on the internet for everyone to see.

For my current event, I have chose to get creative, and not post the same thing as many other people. Im going to hit right at home for a lot of the girls at Lakeland. There seems to be an increase in girls dressing like sluts. They were extremely low cut shirts, short, short skirts/shorts, and really low cut jeans. It's not becoming on any girl, skinny or not. I personally find it utterly embarrassing to be walking down the hallway next to a girl barely wearing clothes. It makes a bad name for all girls, when they come to school with way too much skin showing. If you're trying to impress someone, or make boys look at you, it just grosses them out. It's not attractive, no one thinks it is. I think the staff enforces the rule of covering up to an extent, but not as well as they should. Girls dont show any self-respect when they dress like that. It's extremely degrading, and girls need to grow up, and cover up.
I know this isn't in the 'current event norm', but it gets boring googling current events. It's more personal to write about things like this. I hope its acceptable, Mr. Kay!
And, obviously, there isn't a source to cite.

For my current event I chose to write about how insane people can be about being politicaly correct. For example in Miami, Florida people are getting stirred up over a halloween costume that has a alien mask on it that is attached to a orange prisoner jumpsuit that says illegal alien on it. Many people want the costume to be removed from stores because they think it isn't politically correct. Some people think that it is offensive to illegal immigrants. Why would they care, I don't, they are not suppose to be here anyway. It might just scare them back to where they came from. Also immigrant advocates want retailer to remove the costume from the shelves from there store. If they do that they just torn up the first amendment just so they could be politically correct. This article just grinds my gears.

I current news fugitives from mexico have gone to drastic measures to change their appearance to avoid capture. Eduardo Ravelo is an alleged hit man that has roots with the Juarez drug cartel. Now the reason that this effects us that this type of gang related activity doesnt stop in texas and mexico, this illegal activity can and has reached the northern parts of the U.S. Now Eduardo has gone through drastic measures to change his appearance. Suck as shaving his head, plastic surgery, and burning the finger prints off of his fingers. Now this guy does just about whatever he is told, he has killed people, he has been a drug runner for the Juarez Drug Cartel, he steals cars. This kind of person is a dangerous person obviously because he does all these bad things. And americans should be doing more in there power to stop them.
Recently, a trial in Thailand shows significant effect in HIV vaccinations. It has a 31% level of protection out of 16,000 people of ages 18-30. Although it may seem to be a small amount, this is just a small step for scientist and they can only progress from here. It is said that the vaccine will not work in places like Africa where HIV infection is highest. This is because the vaccine will for some reason not work when it is needed most, or most serious. This is still yet to be figured out why. This affects me because there is only good things to come out of finding a vaccination for HIV. If this is possible then it will reduce the ammount of people with AIDS drasticly. I believe this is great news, even if it is a small percentage it is still very significant towards finding a fully working vaccination.

Last week's "balloon boy" incident is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Richard and Mayumi Heene, whose son Falcon was thought for several hours to have flown away in a homemade balloon, are facing a number of local charges; a Colorado sheriff said this week. As the police scrambled to rescue the 6-year-old boy form the balloon, which later turned out to be hiding in his family's attic. With this stupid act the Heenes have violated FAA regulations barring people from flying balloons or kites within 5 miles of an airport. Apparently the giant silver balloon was apparently not visible on radar, the official said, and the FAA is relying on pilot reports to determine its approximate flight path during the roughly three hours it was aloft Thursday.
I feel that the parents should be slapped for doing something as stupid as this stunt to get some publicity. That is all the parents wanted because they know that if you have a reality show you will get lots of money out of it. This makes me mad because any thing might have happened when this was going on that would need them.

The current event I chose for today is the murder charge being dropped against Eugene Bailey. He was suspected guilty in the gang beating of a 16 year old honors student in Chicago. Bailey's name was taken in but he claimed to be innocent. No one would believe him and finally they checked the tapes and found that he didn't have clothing like what the guy in the video was wearing. I'm glad the charges were dropped against him. I think its a scary situation because that could happen to anyone. It shows how messed up the court system can be and how people jump to conclusions so quickly without knowing the facts. I know that injustice is occurring throughout the world like in this case but I hope this changes. I don't want to be next.

Granholm vetoes extra funds for dozens of school districts. She made a cut of $165 per student. Dearborn and Livonia, being slashed $4.9 million each, Walled Lake, which would lose $4.7 million, and Warren Consolidated, by $3.7 million. The cut affects 39of the 50 disrticts that get more than $11,000 a year per student, almost $4,000 more than poorer districts. This is going to help alot of people out in the long run. So many people are loosing there jobs these days. Which makes it harder and harder to pay for their childs education. So hopefully this will make an effect on peoples money issues.

Today I read, "Alleged hit man changes appearance, FBI says," on CNN. Eduardo Ravelo is a killer who is on the FBI's most wanted list. Hes been "terrorizing the border of Mexico and Texas" as they said in the article. This affects me a lot because my mom and sister were in Texas all last week so it's a scary thought. The crazy thing about this is that Ravelo got plastic surgery to change his appearence. This makes him extremely hard to find and capture. This is bad for everyone because criminals can escape and hide much better now that they are able to get plastic surgery. This will not only effect the nation, but the world. Criminals can have their entire appearence change so that no one will ever recognize them. In order to get some hold on this, plastic surgens should do a better background check on those who want plastic surgery.

Recently, a very strange thing happened in Caldwell Ohio. A woman called in and placed a fake emergency call, but then minutes later called in on a real emergency call when she was trapped under the garage door where the ambulance was stored. It is still unclear why she placed the fake call in the first place. Police think it may be because she was going after medication in the station as she used to work there. However, she got trapped and died. It just goes to show that you don't know who you're going to meet. It also shows how people will go great lengths to get drugs, even though this particular lady failed at getting them. The world is a scary place, and it just goes to show you that you can also die from just about anything, such as a garage door. Overall, this story is pretty scary, and I would like to think that most people would not try something like that.

For my current event I am going to blog about the Halloween costume they are banning because it says illegal alien in a jumper suit, and an alien mask attached to it, with a green card. I could see how this might look like it is something bad it really in my opinion is not. Many immigrant advocate groups are trying to get it pulled from the shelves of stores because they think it is offensive. The company that made these costumes have freedom of speech. So therefor there is nothing the government can do about it. A store owner said that "I would not carry that costume in my store, it is discrimatory". Yet he carries a human taco costume with the mariachi hat. I just think that it is a joke that all these people are freaking out over a simple costume that says illegal alien when it is clearly meant for it go with the alien not a human

More news dealing with the economy this week. What do you know, more companies are selling to become foreign. This time it is sunmircrosystems inc that is cutting back. They plan to eliminate 10 percent of all their workers worldwide. They plan to sell the company to oracle, which once again is a europian company for 7.4 billion dollars. Sun has lost a total of 2.2 billion dollars in the past year. Could you imagine what someone could do with all this money. If only all this money went to something like schools or health care. I guess thats why its called life and nothing is perfect. Sun said all the job cuts will be in effect over the next year and will affect all employees.

My current event blog is how Detroit is the ranked the worst city by MSNBC to raise a child. This does not suprise me, i feel like Detroit has been on the downs for years. Personally, i think one large reason is the lack of capital in Detroit. There is no money to spend on education, leisure and sports. Crime rates, and the amount of drugs in detroit are very high too. I think that detroit takes it to a new level from all other large cities. WIth no money it makes it almost impossible for the government to do anything. However, we need to do something, it is affecting the whole state.

The Pistons might not be give half of what the can but they are making a difference in the lives of young childeren.

For todays current event i want to talk about the football player that was stabbed to death. University of Connecticut starting cornerback Jasper Howard was leaving a school dance just after midnight when a fight broke out between two groups of people. Howard and another person were stabbed. Howard sustained multiple wounds and died at the hospital. Howard is the third Connecticut student to be killed in the last three months. Police have arrested 21-year-old Johnny Hood as a suspect in the murder. I personally feel that something should be done over the fact that their has been 3 students murdered throughout the past three months.
For this evening i will be speaking about a man who will do any thing to avoid the law. Eduardo Ravelo a very dangerous man had plastic surgery to avoid being caught. Ravelo is said to be a ruthless killer from around the Texas/ Mexico border. Eduardo is a hit man and is on the ten most wanted fugetive list. Ravelo was said to have had plastic surgery on his face as well as changing his finger prints to make him nearly impossinle to catch. Police say the man is alive and on the loose. I think that this is rediculous. This man must really not want to go to jail to go through all that trouble for this. However i hope this man is found and taken off the streets to ensure the saftey of the public.

The most recent news in schools have been the changing of school lunches. Their lunches have consisted of unhealthy choices, there for the kids have adopted the unhealthy choice of foods. They are saying that the cost of changing the menu could effect the schools but should still go along with it anyways. Personally I think that is would be the best choice to pick healthier lunches for schools due to overpopulation of obesity. Healthier people also result in healthier people. I always worry about making sure I make the right choice in foods, changing school lunches could help me with that. So I think that it is very important to have healthy food in the school cafeteria.

For my current event, i want to talk about the H1N1 outbreak again. It is obviously spreading around alot lately. it is scary to think that hundreds of people in our area already have gotten it. I was reading avout a recent study by the University of Michighan on the effectaveness of usning handsnaitizer and face-masks in times of high risk, like now. They had 3 dorms of kids using both the hand sanitizer and masks, 3 using just hand sanitizer, 3 using just masks and 3 usning nothing. This study only relates to the kids on that campus, technicaly, but we can assume that it applies to us too. Their results showed that the kids who used boththe hand sanitizer and the masks were dramatically less likely to get anytype of infection or virus. of course, the kids who used neither were much more prone to getting sick. this study has really motivated me to use ALOT more hand sanitizer. Now i woyuldn't go as far as to wear a face mask, but i will make it a goal to avoid sick people and coughing people. Personaly, i think that this study was really helpful and good to know so that now i can avpoid getting sick as best as i can.
