Day 18
Pick any character except the one you are doing for your project. Pretend that they are rescued at this point of the book. You have been assigned to interview them for a news report. Come up with 7 questions and answers. They should be complete sentences and through them I should be able to realize that you have actually been reading.

Ralph, You were the oldest of all the children on the island, what did that mean to you?
"Since I was the oldest on the island they voted me to be the cheif".
What was the scariest thing that happened to you in your time spent on the island?
"There was a beast like creature, with wings and claws, it killed one of the younguns".
Did you enjoy your time without your parents, or did you miss them?
"Well obviously I missed them, decsion making was harder, it was harder to sleep at night, I definately missed my parents".
Jack, how was it being on that island with a whole bunch of people you didnt know?
"It wasnt too difficult i did know some of them they are in my choir."
What was the most exciting thing that happened on the island?
"Well it was pretty awsome when me and the other hunters killed a pig."
What was it like without any parents or grownups on the island?
"Some times it was scarry and other times it was fun, we didnt have anyone to tell us what to do."
How did you keep order on the island?
"We had a leader. Ralph was the leader."
Did you not get along with any of the people on the island?
"Yeah the younger kids were anoying alot of the time. Me and piggy didnt get along either."
Did you ever make anyone mad on the island?
"I let the fire go out one time and then ralph got really mad at me."
Did you miss you parents while you were on the island?
"Yeah i did alot, it was fun sometimes but i missed them being around."

Jack-
How was it without any adults around to help you?
It was difficult at some points, we had to do everything for ourselves. I was the one to try and go hunting for food.
What did you guys do on the island to get recued?
We kept watch for boats and planes around the island. WE kept a fire going so the planes and boats would see the smoke.
What was the scariest part of the whole thing?
I think relizing that we were on the island alone without anyone else but a bunch of young boys.
What did everyone do to help around the island?
I hunted, and the other boys built shelter and gathered food. Everyone had to pitch in.
Was it difficult with the little boys around?
yes, they couldnt take care of themselves because they were to young.
Did you get along with everyone on the island?
No, me and piggy didnt get off on the right foot. I kind of picked on him right from the start.
Did you and Ralph get along since he was the leader?
WE got along most of the time, but sometimes we didnt agree on everything. Like, when I was hunting he wanted me to help with everything.
Jack, what was your time on the island like?
"It was really difficult and I'm glad to be back home."
What was your job on the island?
"Well, I was in charge of hunting for food for everyone."
How well did you and Ralph get along?
"We got along fine for the most part, but we had arguments every now and then."
Who did you dislike the most on the island?
"Piggy, he was an annoying fatty with ass-mar, and he never shut up."
What was your biggest mistake, if you had one, during your time on the island?
"My biggest mistake was leaving the fire unattended. When I came back Ralph yelled at me saying that there was a ship in the distance."
Did you enjoy your time without any adults?
"I actually did. I was able to do whatever I wanted Whenever I wanted to do it."
If you could would you ever go back to live on the island again?
"As much as I enjoyed having no adults around, I wouldn't go back to live there is was hard to survive. I'd much rather be here where i belong."

"How did you boys get on the island?" We were in a plane and it crashed.
"Is anyone on the island chief?" Yes, I am."
"How did you become chief?" I'm the oldest of the boys, so they voted me as cheif.
"Do you all get along on the island?" No we don't.
"What kind of food do you boys eat?" All we can find on the island is fruit.
"What is the scariest thing that has happened to you guys on the island?" There is a beast.
"What did you guys do for safety?" We built shelters.

"How did you make everyone come together for the meeting you had on this island?"
-"well me and Piggy were walking along the beach, and we found a conch. Then piggy showed me how to blow it and everyone came to the meeting when they heard the conch."
"Who were you closest friend on the island?"
-"Simon was probably the closest one, he helped me build shelter and he was always with me."
"Were you scared when you were there?"
-"Of course I was scared, with all the littuns talking about beasts it was hard for it not to get to you."
"Did you guys build a fire on the island? Why or why not?
-"Yes, we did build a fire on the island. We did it because we knew that we would need some sort of signal in order to be rescued."
"What was your job on the island?"
-"My job on the island was to build shelter and lead."
"Who else had special jobs on the island?"
-"Jack and his choir were in charge of hunting and keeping the fire going. Then the littluns helped collect food."
"Did they all complete there jobs?"
-"Well, Jack was mostly only concerned with hunting, he never cared much about the fire."
-Ralph, what was your time on the island like?
-"Well I was the leader and almost everyone looked to me for directions."
-You were the leader? Why were you picked out of all the other boys?
-"I guess it was because I was the oldest and seemed to know more about what needed to be done."
-With all that pressure of being the leader, did you ever make a mistake?
-"Yeah, Piggy counted on me not to tell everybody his nickname, but I did it anyways 'cuz it was funny."
-What all did you accomplish while on the island?
-"Well, we made a fire on the mountain so that planes could see it. Then me and Simon made huts since nobody else would help us."
-Did you have any rules on the island?
-"Yeah, we had a few rules."
-What were some of the rules you made?
-"Well, if we had a meeting and somebody wanted to talk they had to raise their hand, like at school. Then they would get the conch and nobody could interupt them except me."
-Who was the one to find the conch?
-"Piggy found it, but I took it from him."

Ralph: What was it like to have no adults on the island?
"It was fun at first but it got hard because sometimes i miss have a normal life back home."
Why do you think that they made you in charge?
"I mostly think they made me incharge because i was the oldest of all of us."
Did you and jack get along on the island sicne you guys didnt get along sometime?
"We got all for the most part, somtimes we didnt agree with each othere on things but what can you expect when your stuck on an island with people you barley know."
Was it difficult for the boys around you to servive?
"Yes, because it was hard for them to take care of themselves being alone on an island."
What did you guys do for protection?
"We built a shelters."
Who did you get along with the most on the island?
"I mostly got along with simon, he helped me build forts and i hung around him most of the time."
what was your main job on the island?
"My main job on the island was to lead everyone, they mostly counted on me to lead them, but i also built the fort."
Piggy, You were one of the oldest on the island. Did you get a lot of leadership duties?
"Not at all. Ralph and jack did most of the leading. My opinion didnt really seem to matter."
Was it hard for all of you to find food?
"Yes it was very hard. Jack and his group of "hunters" didnt get much meat at all.
Was the meat distrubted evenly among the kids?
" No. I always got skimped out because jack did not like me. It was very annoying".
Do you think Ralph was a good leader?
"For the most part yes. Ithink things would have been a lot diffrent and worse if jack was elected leader."
How were the rules set on the island?
" Ralph would assemble a meeting by blowing the conch shell. Then he would talk about important things and what needed to be set as rules".
Did you think the rules set were fair?
"I think that a lot of the rules were for the good of everyone. For instnce, ralph was the only one who seemed to care about the fire because it was our signal. Ralph was a real smart guy."
Who was your favorite friend on the island?
"Definatly ralph. Everyone else made fun of me because of my weight and glasses. Ralph did make fun of me a little bit, but he always let me express my opinion and listened to me when jack wouldnt.

Well I think I'm probly 4 or 5 but I should be 2. They don't ever listen to me.

I think he's an ok leader but he keeps everybody in line. Well allmost everybody.

He can't control Jack. No one can. Jack is very stronge and won't stop until he gets his way.

Jack is a huge DICK. He thinks he's so much better than everyone else. Wat gives him the right to do watever he wants and not follow orders. My specs he always takes and I'm tired of it.

Ralph, with you being one of the oldest on the island, did you feel that you needed to step up and take responsibility for the younger children?
Of course, I also felt the others who were older needed to step up too, not just me.
Were there any major obsticals you had to overcome while you were on the island?
There were a lot of arguments between all of us really. There was also the beastie, which really caused some confusion and arguments.
How were you able to keep order and keep everyone from turning on eachother?
Well a big help was the conch shell. We used the conch to call meetings and to allow individuals to speak their mind. Whoever was holding the conch, had the floor. This kept things more simple.
Did you ever have doubt that you werent going to be rescued?
For me, no. I was always telling myself and the others that we were going to get rescued. This helped us keep our morale strong. Others did have doubt cross their mind at some point.
Who would you say really helped out the group, and how?
I would say simon. He did the things that the others didnt want to do. He helped me build our shelters and helped explore the island.
If you had to pick another person on the island to be chief, who would it be and why?
I would have to go with Piggy. Hes sensible and realistic which helped a lot. The other negative to piggy, is that he doesnt have much authority in the group.
Will you miss the island?
I think in time I will. To me, it ment freedom. It was a wonderful experience because a bunch of kids were able to set up a society and were able to help one another out, which was pretty cool.

"Well it was difficult at times, but for the most part we stuck together.

"At first it was nice but as it got harder we wish we had some form of adult to help us."

How did you get your source of food on the island?
"Well we had people like Jack and Piggy that hunted and eventually killed a pig."
Did anyone sustain any serious injures?
"There weren't any serious injures but we did lose a fellow friend to the island beast.
What is the island beast you speak of ?
There is a winged beast with claws that killed one of the younguns.
So what was your way of being rescued.
Well it was my idea in which we started a fire so people would see it and know we were in trouble.

Piggy, how did you and the others survive for the time you were on the island?
"Well, we assigned everyone jobs, hunters, builders (for shelters), and those who kept the fire going. With this we were all able to have the necessities to survive."
Was there a main person in charge of you? If so, why was he picked as leader?
"Yes, the first day we voted for Ralph to be chief of the island. He found the conch that brought us all together, so it seem fit that he would be chief."
What did Ralph do with his title as chief?
"Ralph tried to keep us all in order, to make sure we were all doing as much as we could to survive. He was really big on keeping the fire going so that we would get rescued. He was really big on order."
Was there any disputes on the island?
"At first, we all got along just fine. But Jack, one of the older boys on the island, wanted to be leader as well. Often times he would take charge of the other boys, and disobay Ralph's orders. He called me mean names very often, and pushed almost everyone's limits. He was really bent on catching a pig. That is all he seemed to talk about."
What was your worst memory on the island?
"I've haven't talked about it since it happened, no one has, because it was so tragic. One of the first days on the island, a little boy with a birthmark on his face complained of seeing snakes. When we first tried to build a fire that night, an explosion from the fire occured, and we haven't seen that littleum since."
What was a regular day like on the island?
"Well, usually in the morning we would have a meeting about what was going on that day. Most of our time was spent out by the water, or in the shade away from the sun. Even though we were supposed to be working, many of us gave up on our jobs very quickly."
What have got gotten out of this experiece?
"I have learned many life lessons. I have learned about leadership, responsibility, power struggles, and compaionship all through experience. It changed my life because I experienced what is was like to live without parents and to fend for myself."

Q: How did you feel when you first landed on the island?
A: " I was scared at first, I wasn't sure what had happened and where I was and then I saw Piggy and he helped me figure some of those things out.
Q: What did you first think of Piggy?
A: Well at first he really bugged me, then he was fine, but towards the end of the time on the island he started to whine a lot and kind of annoyed me then too.
Q: Do you ever think you would have been rescued if Piggy never found the conch?
A: Well, I'm not sure. Without the conch it would have been difficult to find other people and have them all gather. So him finding that was a big thing, I think.
Q: Who would you say was one of your closer friends on the island?
A: Well, at first Piggy and I were closer, just because we were the first to find each other. But, as time went on I think Simon. He was a hard worker and wasn't kill hungry like Jack. So, I would say Simon and I were better friends.
Q: Was it challenging at all having such a big age difference between the boys?
A: It was at times, it got frustrating having to take care of the little boys and not having them be able to get their own food and stuff.
Q: How did you feel when you first found out you were on an island all by yourself, with only a small group of boys?
A: I was scared, I didn't show it very much. But, having to fend for yourself at a younger age is a frightening thing.
Q: Do you think you will miss the island?
A: I might sometimes, but I'm happy to be able to go home and not have so much responsibility. But, I will definitely miss the freedom we had out there.

Me: Ralph how much pressure was on you when you became the leader?
Ralph: I felt like a lot of pressure was on me, considering we were stranded on an island and we didn't really know what it would be like.
Did you fear that you you couldn't live up to your new role?
Of course leaders always have there doubts, but as a leader it is up to me to stand up and accept this new role.
As the leader, who do you depend/lean on during the hard times?
I depended on everyone to take a role and be helpful, but so far i would say Jack, Simon, and Piggy would be my most helpful.
Do you ever find yourself missing your mother?
yes, i miss my mother a lot. However I know my dad will come save me so I will get to see her soon. I do have to be strong for the others though, so I can't show any weakness.
is there anyone in the group who you do not trust/ could cause any trouble?
I think Jack could potentially cause a problem, because he is such a dominant person.
who do you think is a better leader, Piggy or Jack?
I think Jack is a strong person. however piggy is smart and could prove to very useful.
Will this group survive?
I think if we all stay together and help one another we will get out alive.

When the plane flew over the island and you noticed that the fire went out. how did that make you feel?
Well it made me very angry. i get a simple order like making sure the fire doesnt go out. we had an oppiturnity to get recused and it was there fault we didnt.

well i would have to say i really like them all the same. put i kind of butt heads with jack.

Piggy, you said most of the kids while on the island liked the thought of no parents. How did you feel?
"I didnt like it at all. I thought having no parents or authority was horrible. Bad things would happen without them. I wanted my aunt there."
Many of the kids made fun of you while on the island. Did it effect the way you helped?
"No. Yes none of them listened to my ideas or anything i said, but i still wanted to help. I needed to be rescued too. If everyone didnt help our chance of rescue or survival went down."
You were made fun of a lot on the island. How did you feel?
"I felt completly disrespected under the circumstances. Here we are on an abondoned island trying to survive and be rescued. While the kids couldnt stop making fun of me and putting me down. We all deserved respect and thats all i gave."
You were one of the oldest on the island Piggy, (other than Ralph being the oldest) did that give you special privaleges or leadership abilitiys?
"No. Like i said i was very disrespected on the island. It didnt matter i was older than most. I was just the pathetic helpless fatkid. No one looked for me for help or advise. They ignored anything i said."
Who was your bestfriend on the island?
"I would have to say Ralph. He was there with me from the begginning. Although he told the kids my awful nickname, he was still the nicest. He listened to me the most i would say."
Who fought the most on the island?
"Ralph and Jack. Ralph was our leader from day one. JAck seemed to want the leader position. He wouldnt listen to Ralph at all times, and wanted to pick fights with him. He also would pick on me the most."

Was there any type of leadership on the island?
-Yes, I was voted chief. I called meetings and set goals for teh group.
What type of goals did you set for everyone?
-My main goal was to be rescued. Above all, we just needed to keep a fire going with smoke so we could be spotted, and then had to survive until we were found.
How did you manage to survive?
-We built shelters and there was an abundance of food for us to eat. There were even pigs that could be killed and eaten.
Did you go hunting?
-No, I did not. There was a group of us who went hunting. I would mainly help build huts and keep a little order.
Were there any fights between the boys?
-Some fights did occur, and I tried my best to stop them. Nobody ever got into a long fist fight or anything, but people did things such as yelling at each other.
How did you keep order between so many boys?
-I established some rules for us to follow. During meetins only one person could talk at a time - when they were holding the conch. This helped keep our meetings a little more organized.
Overall, what did you learn from your experience?
-I think I have started to mature through this experience. I know now that being a leader takes a lot more than looking the part. Leaders have to be able to work through problems and effectively follow through on their plans. I think if I had thought more logically about situations, I would have made a better leader.

Ralph, I realize that you are the leader of the group, do you think that the stress of that role made you more opened to the thought that you might have not been saved?
"Yes, Lauren, I was definatly more opened to the fact that we moght not be saved and that we could have not been able to survive."
What was the worst exsperience for you since you laned on this island?
"I think the worst exsperience for me since I got here, was when we all thought there was someone or something herein the wild that was keeping everyone at the edge of their seats."
I understand that you guys were put in the situation of getting to know each other and imediatly hsving to get along, how did that go for you?
"I think that it was y easy at first to get everyone togeather but it was a little difficult to get along after a while."

What was it like not knowing everybody on the island?
It was not that bad because i did know a group of people, they were my choir, and I was there leader.
What did you do to get attention of the rescue planet?
Well first we climbed up the moutain, then we lit a fire for smoke. When a group and I, from the choir decided to go hunting we letthe fire go out, and a plane boat same but did not see us.
What was the most happiest moment on the island?
My most happiest moment on the island was when we caught the pig.
Was it difficult to keep an eye on the younger children?
Yes, it was very difficult to watch the younger kids. They did not know how to take care of themselves, so the older kids would have o help them.
What was you're job while on the island?
I was in charge of the hunting.
Who annoyd you the most while on the island?
I would say Piggy annoyed me the most. He just slowed us down because he was had ass mar, was fat, and would never shut up.
What is it like being of the island?
It is amazing, It was fun for a while because there were no adults to restrict what we did. But after awhile it just got hard to do a lot of the work. So now that i am back I can relax.

Well i thought i was the only person, and then I met Ralph, but still it was kinda scary.

No, most of them are mean to me and single me out, its not really fair.

Yes, i like the freedom of not being told what to do, but at the same time it would be nice to have adults to keep us in line.

Yes, Ralph is the leader. But people just blow off what he says to them, and dont listen.

Yes, we have to keep everyone in line some how.
- What is the scarest thing you have been threw on this island?
Well when kids were saying there was a beast on the island, that shook me up a little bit, were all kids, were not going to know what to do if something pops out at us.
- Would you go back on the island again if you had to?
Well, it would be more enjoyable if i actually had some of my friends with me. so im not sure if i would come back again with not knowing anyone.

Q. So Simon how was it on the island?
A. It was bearable because we had to survive to be rescued. But even though you are able to live on an island like that it is hard to be cut of from other people and our way of life.
Q. What did you do on the island?
A. Well I help with almost every thing on the island that would help us. For example I helped make the shelters, collect fruit for food, convince the others that there is no beatys on the island, and help the littlens get there food that they could not reach.
Q. What is your opinion on the bestys?
A. Like I said be for I don’t believe in them one bit because it is all in our heads. It is in our nature to feel fear. But when we were on that island a lot of ordinary things seam to become bestys in the dark.
Q. Why did you take care of the littlens when none of the others would?
A. Who else was there to take care of them? I think that all of the others thought of them as a burden that they just let them try to live alone. That is not right so I helped them however I can.
Q. What are you feelings when it was just you and Ralph making the shelters?
A. I felt like a little betrayed because everyone else was not doing things that important to help all the others. I could under stand that the hunters had an excuse because they were hunting for all of us but it would have been nice if they did help at least every other day.
Q. How did you feel when the fire was out when a ship passed by the island?
A. I was really mad because we were not going to get of the island as soon as we hopped but the ship might not have even notice the smoke from the signal.
Q. Do you think that you should have been chef since you would try to take of everyone?
A. It would be nice it I was chef but I thing that Ralph did a great job at it. But I feel that I could not take that type of responsibility of everyone. Plus not many people would accept my authority anyway.

A. Yes, I knew all of the choir boys because I was in the choir leader.
Q. When you first landed on the islan what kind of question were running through your head?
A. I was wondering how we were going to get off the island and how were we going to get food.
Q. What were your thought when you tried to kill the pig?
A. The first pig was very difficult because i have never killed anything like that before, but after the first one it was fairly easy.
Q.How did you feel when you weren't elected the leader of the group?
A. At first I was dissapointed because I thought I would have had a better idea on how to survive. Later on I couldn't take it anymore.
Q.Did you get along with everyone one the islan?
A. No, Piggy and I fought the most because he annoyed me and Ralph and I argued now and then.
Q.Why did you get exccited when Ralph said there were going to be rules?
A.I was happy that there were going to be rules because rules are what keep people civilized.
Q.If you could go back and dodit again would you?
A.Defantly not. Things got out of control there because there weren't any adults around and there weren't any real laws.

What have you learned about yourself through this exsperience?
"I think the one thing I learned about myself is that I can lead a group and i can keep everyone in line. I do have to admit that I was doubting myself, but then piggy said that I was ment for it and that I am good at what I do so I should not turn down my position."
Why were you feeling not good enough for your position?
"I was starting to think that I wasn't keeping everyone in line but also, we had a meeting about the "beast" and we didnt even finish the assembly before people just started to leave and hunt the "beast". So, I just felt like I couldn't keep anyone sane and comfortable."
So, in the end, what will you do now that you are saved from this island?
"I am going to eat real food, and I am going to really sleep for the first time in a while."

Jack, how is it being home now?
Honestly, it wasnt that bad on the island even, I made some new friends and had fun with them.
Were you ever scared on the island?
Yeah, it was scary at times, but once I found out I wasnt alone, and there were other kids stuck on that island with me, I wasnt really scared anymore.
What did you do for fun?
Well, I really liked hunting. I went out everyday trying to kill a pig for some food for the group, and finally on like the 3rd try I got a kill.
Did everyone get along on the island?
Yeah, for the most part. One time Ralph and I got into a little fight because I let the fire go out while I was on a hunt.
Oh, so did you guys set up like rules or anything?
We had lots of rules set up. Only the person holding the conch shell could be speaking at the time, and also we set many groups for people.
The littluns and I were all the hunters, but most of the time they just ate fruit instead of helping the hunt, Ralph and Simon built huts and looked out for rescuers, and Piggy wasnt really good for anything, but sometimes he watched the littluns. Oh, and I was supposed to keep the fire going at the top of the mountain.
Did everyone else make it home alright?
No, unfortunately we lost one of the littluns to the "beastie", but it was actually just a tree that exploded near him because our fire got out of control.
Do you think anything should have been done differently on the island?
I think I should have been leader, and all the other kids should have worshiped me, like a monarchy sort of. King Jack, sounds good to me.
Q.) Jack, it seems like you really hate Piggy, why is that?
A.) He's a fatty. He thinks he knows everything yet lays around all day. Ralph favored him and let him be lazy.
Q.) Do you think you would have made a better chief than Ralph?
A.) Of course, all Ralph does is worry about the fire.
Q.) Do you also hate Ralph?
A.) Yes, but unlike Piggy, I do respect him.
Q.) What would be the first thing you would do if you were made chief.
A.) I would get rid of the stupid conch rule. Some people should remain quiet, such as Piggy and Simon.
Q.) What did you contribute most to this group?
A.) I'm an amazing hunter. I figured out how to hunt by disguising ourselves. I'm the reason we get meat.
Q.) What do you think of the younguns?
A.) They are whinny and should learn to take care of themselves. Piggy seems to be the only one to actually care about them.
Q.) Do you feel bad for letting the fire out?
A.) Sure it was some bad luck but what were the chances of it being there the two hours I left it unmaned. I wish we were rescued then but I needed the twins to hunt!

Piggy-
Q.) Piggy, well do you mind if I call you that?
A.) "Actually I do mind. I would very much prefer you do not refer to me as Piggy becuse that is what they call me back home, I find it to be embarrassing and degrading."
Q.) Well then, what did the boys call you on the island?
A.) "...The boys called me Piggy even though it greatly bothered me."
Q.) Sounds like a touchy subject, but anyway I am assuming the plane crash was really scary for you, do you remember much about the accident?
A.)"Well I recall the plane violently shaking and people saying the plane had been fired at and hit, most of it was a blur but I woke up on the island and before long found Ralph on the beach."
Q.) This means that all the boys were seperated correct? How were ou able to find each other?
A.) "For the most part we were scattered about the island, but we were able to find eachother when Ralph blew into a conch shell that we had discovered that created an extremely loud noise that led all the boys to the beach."
Q.) On the island who was the first child to really pick up all the responsibilities as leader?
A.) "Ralph became our first chief at the very beginning of our adventures."
Q.) How was it decided that he should be the one to lead?
A.) "We had a vote when we first all met up on the beach and he obviously won the vote."
Q.) Did you vote for Ralph or was there another boy?
A.) "I voted for Ralph even though he told all the boys that they called me Piggy back home even wen I told him not to. I still though that he would make a better leader than Jack, who ran against him."
Q.) I wish I had more time, but for my final question, I am wonderig if you felt as though everything was organized and under order on the island?
A.) "Absolutly not. There were many times when I wondered if the other children completely forgot how to be civilized. It was very frustrating and it seemed like the other boys never listened to anything I said."

My Blog was late but we discussed it in class and due to the fact that my internet is down at home and I talked to you about it already, you said that it was okay if I posted them late.

Now Piggy, you did not know any of the other boys that you were stranded with on the island before the plane crashed correct?
"No I didn't. These boys were from a different place than me. We had different accents as well."
Did they treat you differently because of this?
"Well I did feel that many of the other boys didn't like me much. They never listened to my ideas and I never got to go on the hunting trips."
Who did all of the other boys listen to?
"Pretty much everyone listened to Ralph. We all elected him leader at our first assembly. Jack didn't like that Ralph was the leader and he didn't listen much to Ralph."
Did you like Ralph as your leader?
"I certainly did. Ralph was one of the few of the boys that actually showed me respect. He was a good leader because he had the mindset to help others and focus on things to keep us safe in order for us to be rescued."
You said that the boys wouldn't listen to you or pay any attention to your ideas. How did you feel about that and what were some of your ideas?
"It made me very angry. At an assembly we made a rule that stated that whoever was holding the conch could talk and express what he wanted to say. I suggested that we keep time by making a sundial. I thought it would help us to measure how much sunlight we had to work on shelters and finding food. I just wanted to help and be more organized."
How did you feel about how the other boys acted?
"I thought it was revolting. I told them, I said that if their parents or any grownups were there they would have been ashamed of themselves. They were acted like savages just running around making weird noises and laughing. They played werid games that replayed their hunting trips. One time Roger actually got hurt when he was playing the role of the pig. I didn't like those childish games much at all."
Were there any instances that you felt like you would never be rescued?
"Yes. I can remember one specific day. We established a schedule so that our signal fire on top of the mountain would be lit always as a signal in the case that a ship would pass by and see it or a plane may see it from above. This one day Ralph and I were by the pools, he was swimming. He stood up so quickly that I was startled. He started shouting "There's a ship! There's a ship!" He then started running up to the top of the mountain. By the time I caught up with him, it took me awhile because I was short of breath because of my asthmar, I saw him standing in the ashes of our once lit fire. Jack and his hunters had gone to hunt and let the fire out. We had had a chance to be rescued that very day but because of the ignorance and obsessiveness of Jack about hunting we lost that chance. I felt that that ship was our ony chance and was very discouraged. Thank the Lord we were rescued; we were very lucky."
