Day 12

Again, test on Friday over the entire book. It will be multiple choice with some short answer essay questions.

For this evening:

Pick one of the themes you have been charting (due on Friday) and discuss how that theme was woven through the entire book. You need to give at least 3 examples of where the theme was seen and cite the page number with your example. Then discuss how this theme has had an impact on your own life.

I think the theme is dishonesty. In the story many people have been dishonest. Like on example is when okonkwo was dishonest to ike and killed ike himself. Also They white men are dishonest when they come inot the land and take it over. It just made them think every white man was like this. Also when he would hit his wife this showed because he would never almost pretty much lie about it and not tell anyone. Dishonesty impacts my own life in many ways also. If one of your loyal friends is dishonest that makes you think if they are really your friend. And if you parents are then you wonder if you can ever trust them

The theme I'm choosing is customs and traditions. An example of this theme is how important wrestling and physical strength is to the Ibo (p.3). They basically use it as a way to show off and gain respect. Another example would be the Ibo's week of peace (p.31). My last example is the eguwugu's ceremonies (p.88). This theme made me see how different peoples' lives are around the world. The Ibo tribe live very primitive lives in my opinion, but their customs are much stronger than ours.

I'm choosing culture clash. I think that culture clash has had a decent effect on me. In the story there is a huge culture clash when the white man shows up. The white man was different. He sipped his wine(Pg 138). They were all told that if he lived there he would destroy the village (pg. 138). So they decided to kill him. he said nothing at all to be killed (Pg 139). This has occurred in my life because of the war in Iraq. The terrorists came here and started to destroy new york. So we went there so we could solve this problem. kind of like the white men do after they get the message that one of their own were killed.

The theme I have chosen is culture clash. The first example is when an osu killed the sacred python and it angered the village (157). Another is when enoch unmaskes the egwugwu and thet destroy the christian church (186). The last is when 0konkwo kills the messanger when he tries to tell the ibo people they need to end the meeting to stop (205). This theme impacts my life because there are tons of different cultures clash every day. This theme is even sometimes the cause of war. Culture clash is in the story alot and impacts my life every day.

There is THREE themes in particular that weave together and the whole book. Starts with culture (witch is the entire thing), Choices and Consequences, Betrayal. The whole book is based on these people's culture, then Okonkwos choices move him away from his clan and gives it a chance to weaken, therefore creating betrayal by allot of his village. This can be a path of life. It's very similar to mine. The free blog said how thing's were going for me. It just reminds me of that kinda. Or allot of other peoples lives.

I would say that an important theme that I would think is interwoven throughout the book is choices and conseqeunces. There are truly numerous examples of it scattered quite liberally throughout the book. The first, most noticable example is in chapter where Okonkwo asks yam seeds of Nwakibie so he can start a life for himself (p 21-22). This crucial first step in Okonkwo's life is what I believe led him to his other choices in life. As he became richer, he became much more standoffish as well as hardly ever humble. A second, just as important example of Okonkwo's choices having a consequense is when he kills Ikemefuna against the advice of his friend (pg 57 & 61). This led to Okonkwo's deep regret of his action, which, despite attempts at justification, haunted him for a while. He was Ikemefuna as more of a son to him than Nwoye, which leads to a last, important choice and consequence. Nwoye was never liked by his father as much as Enzima or Ikemefuna, and therefore, he drifted away from his father. When the British came with Christianity, Nwoye was among the first to convert ( p 143-145). This rash decision on Nwoye's part is, what I feel his final way of letting Okonkwo know his displeasure with him. A final F**K-YOU! If you will.

Choice and Consequence has a definite affect on anyone's life. I myself have made plenty of bad decisions and have paid for them in varying degrees, but I'd like to think that I do occasionally make good decisions. The consequences of those decisions, which are more results, are generally favourable. This is the integral part of our lives, choosing and living with what we chose. A universal law, much like Murphy's law that guides our lives on eway or another. We are our own beings, and we are our own relfection.

I think the main theme throughout the book is betrayal. There is betrayal when Okonkwo kills Ike. Ike believed that he was starting to become a son to Okonkwo and Oknowko goes and kills him. Even though Okonkwo did not want to kill him he still betrayed him(p.61). Okonkwo then betrays the earth godness because he beats his wife during the week of peace(p.29). Then the White people betray the peopele of Umofia because are coming in to take over there land or take away the way their lives but they don't say they are. They are trying to take it over and stab the people of Umofia in the back(There really isn't a page number but you can tell that the white man is trying to take over when they put the 6 leaders in jail). This theme relates to me that if you betray someone you will never be trusted. If you betray your parents they will end up mad and ground you or something. Betrayal usually makes the situation worse.

too mean the main theme of the book is culture clash. I think that culture clash is the main theme becuase though out the whole book it talks about home their culture changes becuse the white man. They come to there village and show them their way even though its ways different then the villages. But well they do that they change the culture on the village to what they think is right. As they are changing things the villagers dont always think that they are right and sometime dont like it. But the white men always find away to tell them that there way of life is wrong. The part i dont like is when the white men come and tell them what they should believe and that there god is wrong and that there arent many gods there are only one. I think people should be able to believe in what they what. No one should try to change that in a person becuase its their own belief

I think the main theme for the whole book is culture clash. The book talks about the culture changes when the white man came in. The white man showed their way, and tried to get everybody to chaneg their ways, or their culture. 0konkwo kills the messanger when he tries to tell the ibo people they need to end the meeting to stop. I think that is a very important example from the book about the white man. I think the book shows a good lesson that you shouldnt try to change people to be the way you are. Everybody is different.

So the main theme that i see occuring is choices and consequences. No matter what Okonkwo seems to do things usually end up turning out bad. MY first example is in chapter nine i believe when Okonkwo goes out with the group to kill Ike. Okonkwo was woarne not to go, but he went anyway. BGecause he went he then had to kill Ike to keep his reputation. This is sad because he thought Ike was a good son and did not want him to die. Another choice made by Okonkwo was to kill the messenger in cahpter 25. This was what he thought was a good idea because he thought it would jump start the rst of the clan into going to war with the white man. Intead it backfired and only helped to deterr the clan from fighting back. Lastly Another major decision Okonkwo made was when he dicided to hang himself in chapter 25. To Okonkwo this is a good idea because he is going out his way and proudly and before his way of life gets destroyed. This however turns out to be a bad thing as well because know the clan has lost all respect for him and he ended up being like his father, who he did not want to be like. This theme impacts me in many ways because there is always a consequence to everything i do. When i make decisions i have to make the best ones possible to avoid getting the worst consequences. For example i could have stayed later at alpine than i did tonight, but i left because the roads are TERRIBLE!!! (if its like this tommorw moring im going to be super pissed) anyway i came home and the roads were super bad but if i would have came home leter they would have been even worse and i couldve got in an accident or asomething.

The theme i'm picking is culture clash. culture clash began when white man came in to the Ibo's territory. They started telling the Ibo that their gods were fake and false. The white man came in the the Ibo's villages and preached about their god. After they moved in to the Ibo's villages they wanted and area to build a church so they could "teach" the Ibo their ways. After some time the Ibo started to look in to the white man's way of life. This drove some of the Ibo so insane it led to one of their leaders to hang him self.

Throughout the entire story, Okonkwo made decisions that he knew could either make him, or break him, and they all lead to different consequences, sometimes good and sometimes bad. So that is the theme I think was the most relavent to the book, choices and consequences. Each different choice that was made by Okonkwo all lead to something more important in his life to lead to the final destination, which was the end of the story. If things had maybe played out a little different for Okonkwo, I don't believe that his fate would have been so horrible in the end. One choice that Okonkwo made was to kill Ikemefuna, which lead to the consequence of feeling much grief and regret in Okonkwo's head, and also much hatred from his son Nwoye.(Pg 57) Another choice that Okonkwo makes is in last chapter, chapter 25 when Okonkwo makes the decision to kill the messenger and then hang himself because he cannot handle the change that has occured in the blink of an eye for his village and its too overwhelming to Okonkwo. The choice made by Nwoye to convert to the "white man's religion" caused much anger from Okonkwo towards his son because he feels very betrayed by his son. Even though Nwoye feels very pleased with his choice, he has to deal with the consequence of feeling shamed by his father Okonkwo(pg 144). This whole book to me revolves around the choices and consequences made by the people in the village of Umuofia and each one leads to another choice that has to be made for their people.

customs and traditions had a large impact throughout this book. wether it was describing the tribal clan structure (p. 6), the egwugwu's political status in the tribe (p. 74) or how okonkwo was exiled to his motherland (p.87). customs and traditions, i feel, is by far the most evident theme. it relates to the missionaries coming into the igbo region, and trying to change them. it also is the way the igbo structure their villages, towns, families, events and so on. my customs and traditions play a huge part of my lie. my school, job, daily routines, attitude and al are a very important part of my life. i hold them very dear and follow my customs very closley.

One of the themes that is evident throughout the entire book of Things Fall Apart is choices and conseqences. I found myself chooing this theme for many chapters because many of the reasons Okonkwo the main character finds himself alinated and lonley, is the consequnece of the choices he had made. Wether Okonkwo's choices were direct or indirect, he still had to face the outcomes of things. For example, Okonkwo accidently shoots Ikemefuna which may be indirect, but as a result he faces grief and lonliness because of it(pg 57&61). Yet again Okonkwo chooses to take anothers live, when at the funeral kills his friends son, therefore he was sent away to his homeland to be alone and ultamately alinated. Another example is when Okonkwo is faced with decision is when he chooses to kill the messanger twords the end of the story. His consequence he faces is made by another choice of his to selfiously kill himself. Choices and consequences has had an impact in my own life in big ways and little ways. Everyday I, as well as every other human being, is faced with choices to say yes and to say no everyday. I am faced with the challenge of choosing my own fate because I have within my own power to choose how I react and what I want to do in all situations. A specific example in my own life is when I choose to stay out late into a Saturday night, I pay the consequnces the next morning when I go to church and I start realizing how much more enjoyable church could have been if I had gotten more sleep so I could have been more alert and focused.

I think that the theme customs and traditions is the most wide-spread and common throughout the story. They take about wresteling in a good protion of the story and it shows how this tradition is so popular with the tribe (pg 46, ch 6.) Another big tradition the people have is the big feasts. In chapter 19 for example (pg 162) Okonkwo throws a feast to thank his motherland for letting him stay. In another spot that shows culture is about the first people to join the christian church. They say that it is for the low-life due to the fact that many of the people to first join had somthing aginst the tribe. Like the women who could only birth twins (pg 154). This theme plays a big part on my life and the way i act. I am respectful to the traditions my family celebrates and the customes we have adopted.

There are many themes that take place in the book. Such theme that is showing up alot more towards the end of the book was the Culture Clash. This theme started in chapter 14 (pg 129) when Okonkwo was left out to be in exile after killing Ezeudu's son. This was when the missonaries first visited and try to bring about their culture. They wanted to expand thier religion and have followers. Then in chapter 20 (pg 171) when Oknokwo returns and see's how much everything has changed for him. He can't stand it and hates the new religion taking away from their old ways. Then in the last chapters (pg 205) when Oknokwo wants to do something about all this change. In the end he ends up killing himself of a way of a last fight. I really cant think of any way this has impacted my life. I haven't been forced to a religion or someone who is trying to change my religion.

Customs and traditons..

This book has many moments of customs and traditions. Like when okonkwo wanted to make everyone a feast to say thank you. Also how physical streagth works throughout the story. There also was culture clash during the story not only when someone was killed but when there were disagreement between people. It goes to show how in our lifes we deal with many things that the story does talk about.

I believe that customs and traditions are a big theme in this story. There are many things that go on in the story that describe their culture and lifestyle. One of the main events in the beginning of the story is the wrestling match. When Okonkwo wins this his village looks up to him and he gains much fame.(p3)Another example is when Okonkwo goes into exile. (p87)This shows a lot about their culture because when someone commits a crime or has done something wrong, then their punishment is going into exile.I also think that culture clash is another big theme throughout the book. One of the biggest examples there i think is in chapter 23 when the eguwugu people get into a big fight with mr.smith because of enoch unmasking one of their people. This is a big example of culture clash i think. Customs and traditions play a big part in anyones life i believe. Your lifestyle is determined by your background and your traditions and i think that everyone has their our traditions that make them who they are.

sorry mr.kay, my internet was down all day yesterday cause we were getting our cable fixed. so i got this done as soon as we got it working. hope its ok. thx.

The main theme, which is obvious throughout the whole book, is choices and consequences. The first thing that comes up is when a neighboring village kills a women from Umuofia(pg.8). Then they had to sacrifice a virgin girl and a boy. In chapter four, Okonkwu beat his wife duringthe week of peace (pg.29) His puishment was to take one she-goat, one hen, a length of cloth and one-hundred cowries. Finally last but definatly not least, in chapter thirteen Okonkwu shot a young boy (pg.124). They were celebrating the death of a great warrior and shooting their guns. On the final solute, Okonkwus gun exploded. His consequence was get banished from his village for seven years. I think this theme has dramaticaly effectedmy life. For everything anyone chooses to do there is a consequence.
