Day 10

Hope you did well on the quiz today. Again, you should be read through chapter 21 and we will have a busy week next week dealing with the book and the chapters we have not yet gone over.

For this evening:

Discuss your opinion of the "white man" coming into Nigeria and how they are dealing with the Igbo tribes. Use specific examples in your blog to back up your opinions. Also, how would you feel if some group came into your town and started taking it over without you having any say? What would you do under this situation?

Have a great weekend. I am out at a meeting on Monday. The sub will read any names of people who have missed blogs for staying on Tuesday (my dream would be for the sub to have to read no names).

I think that the Igbo tribe is dealing with the white man coming into the village the right way. I mean some of them are conforming into the church which isnt good either. They are kind of sitting back and keeping a close eye on them. They are watching every move they make. Of course I wouldn't like if someone came into our city and tride to take it over. I would eventually leave or rebel against them. You gotta do what you gotta do, even if it is a act of violence.

My opinion of the "white man" coming into Nigeria and how they deal with the ibo tribes is that it is a positive thing in many ways, and a negative also. I believe it is a postive thing because the white man is showing the people of the tribe modern ways like the "iron horse" which was really a bicycle. It's also a good thing in my opinion because they are showing that there are other religions and that they have the right to be whoever they want to be a worship whoever they want, and they don't always have to conform to the way the tribe has been living in the past. On the other hand, it's a negative thing they came into the town because they are starting to take power away from the ibo tribe in teaching them all new ways because they are conforming. If a group came into my town and started taking it over without you having any say, I would feel frustrated and belittled most likely because I would feel so helpless and powerless in having no decision on what's going on. Under this situation, I am sure I would find a clever way to find a loop hole around it so that I could live my life the way I wanted to.

My opinion on the white man comming in to the Nigeria is that they should not even be there. The Ibo people do not even want them there. The people dont even want to believe in the white mans god. The Ibo people dont even like that the white man has changed their life style and said their gods were fake. I would be pissed if some group came to try to change my religion. What I would do is protest and try to ruin the false religion. Other cultures do not have the rite to try to change others.

I am absolutely and totally disgusted with the fact that the British and other groups of people find themselves in any way superiour on the basis of their religion or their industrial capabilities. It is one of the most disgusting and despicable aspects of the entire human race. Pointless wars are fought over the "I'm better than you" or the "My God is better than yours" arguments. I think that the Igbo should have killed the missionaries and at least fought for their beliefs. While what happened to the Abame village is bad, they didn't try to fight back against the bigger group. They should have pushed the British out. Over the years, all they did was oppress the Igbo and other tribes. It's a despicable situation and the Igbo should have made a stand instead of Okonkwo singular.

If this happened in White Lake, I would be absolutely and completely pissed, especially if it had religious connotations to it. I'm a firm believer religious tolerance, meaning that no one should ever convert, try to convert or knock another persons religion or beliefs. I would probably move out from White Lake, or, more realistically, speak out. It's what I'm best at, and is all I could really do at my age.

The white men coming into Nigeria and sort of just taking over, is beneficial and also sort of a big invasion for the Igbo tribe. They are teaching the tribe new ways that are more advanced, like the Iron Horse. The Igbo tribe had no idea what that was because they had never seen anything like it before and the only use of transportation they use are horses, when the iron horse is really a bicycle. The white men are coming in and showing in religion that is really causing much commotion for the tribe but also benneificial for someone very important in the story. Nwoye connects to the new religion of Christianity brought into the tribe by the white men. But Okonkwo is so dissapointed in his son and it causes a lot of commotion. The white men just coming in and taking control over the Igbo tribe is not well liked byt the people in the village and they feel very over-powered by the white men. Which I don't blame them at all because if someone came into my town and did that I would feel very belittled and controlled. Under this situation I would honestly probablly move out to a new town because there is nothing that I hate more than feeling controlled by someone and being told what to do and not having that certain amount of control over myself.

I think the way the white men treat the Igbo is very bad. I honestly think they have no right to force their religion on Igbo. The Igbo have been living under their religion for a long time, and they have the right to preserve it. A negative example would be how the white men told the Igbo that their gods were dead. I would find that very offensive. If strangers came into my town and forced their ways, I would feel very cheated. I would try to find a way to prevent their ways from being forced upon me. I would protest, or something along the lines of that.

The white man is starting to take over the Igbo Village. The book talks about them wanting a place of there own and buliding houses. The Igbo people are not happy about this one bit. They feel that they do not have the right to be here. They make a mock of the white man and tie him up to a tree with his iron horse. I think they are just afraid of what will happen. They are more scared of the white man. The Igbo people aren't to fond of change in their village. They want to keep the same traditions and customs. They feel it is insane to bring these people in who want to change everything they so strongly agree about. If someone came into my town and started taking over i would feel out of place too. I would feel frightned of what they could do like take over are whole town. Under this situation i would probably leave or try to get an understanding of where they are coming from and hopefully talk to them about taking over.

I don't think the white man has ever done anything that was too out of line. I think that the white man could be more respectful to other beliefs. They should both have says. I don't like how white people are bring there governments, they have no right to do that. In the same sense they have a right to be able to bring there faith into the mix. I don't think that that they should have killed the man in the begging. Then things might have been different.

I think they way they are dealing with the tribes is worng. I dont think they are being kind enough and they are doing harsh things. If someone came into white lake and started taking over im not sure what i would do. Im sure we wouldnt just let them take it without a battle. It would be horrible having like your house takin from you with no say. Im not sure why people would do this though it is wrong. I think you should just have to stick with the land you already have and thats all.

I think that the white men coming into the ibo tribes is kind of wrong. It would have been better if they didnt try to dictate them so much. They were fine until they boasted about having the correct religion. They should no have casted down hundreds of years of igbo tradition. If people came into my community and started to dictate my life, and i had no say in it i would be very angry. I think i might try to do somthing peacfull at first and if that failed i would go along the lines of somthing Okonkwo tried/wanted to do.

I think that the ibo tribe is dealing with the white man carefully. I think that this is because they do not want to get slaughtered like the other villiage. Instead of fighting them they Ibo's are just letting them be and trying to keep the peace as much as possible. If that happened to me i would definatly want to have a say in it. If they were just coming to live in the villiage and not going to try to convert me and live my way then i would not have a problem with it. But if they were forcing me to do things i didnt want to then i would rebel against them. I would not rebel right away instead i would try to keep it peaceful and rebel if i had to.

I beleive that the white man should not even be in Nigeria. Nobody likes them at all. They are trying to force them to change there religion. That is one reason why they dont like the white man. They dont even want to beleive the white mans god. The white man also say that there gods are dead which is a negetive example. People you don't even know who come in and try changing everything around. They are very proud people, and everything was fine before the white man came in.

When the white man enters Nigeria, they seemingly do not do anything to disturb the Igbo tribe. Only when Abame's Oracle explains to its people that the white man will cause harm to them do the Igbo people start trouble and slaughter the white man. They tie his bicycle up to a tree and kill him, and he was doing nothing wrong. If someone came into my town and starting taking it over, I would feel very encroached and attempt to revolt. Unlike the Igbo people, who do not revolt and actually assist the white man in giving them land to build upon. I disagree with this and would try to rebel against the encroachers. Why should any place be overtaken without any effort to stop it?

sorry mr. kay i went to my aunts house after school and the blog wasn't on here before i left. i have no idea why but they don't have internet, so i couldn't get it done until today.

If some foreigners were to come to white lake and killed everyone i would be mad. i understand why the ibo killed the man. he didn't say anything so they saw him as a threat. i think the white man should of come in and explain that he comes in peace. i do understand why the white men came and killed the ibo. the ibo killed one of their men for no reason. in my opinion they should have found out who killed the white man and killed them. if i was in this situation i would try and fight back. i wouldn't just sit there and take it. i think if the ibo tribe had more advanced weapons they would have been able to defend themselves.
